Too far away from the beach
As a Lifetime Titanium Elite member with more than 2,000 lifetime nights, I have stayed at Marriott properties around the world for over two decades and have written overwhelmingly positive reviews throughout that time. Unfortunately, this stay fell short in several key areas and did not meet the standards I have come to expect from the Marriott brand.
I would first like to recognize General Manager Hannah, who was welcoming, personable, and genuinely warm throughout our stay. She was, without question, the highlight of our experience.
Unfortunately, our arrival experience was disappointing. At check-in, Kathleen neither acknowledged my Lifetime Titanium Elite status nor thanked me for my loyalty. She appeared unfamiliar with elite benefits and was unable to confidently answer basic questions regarding breakfast service. The interaction felt purely transactional and lacked the hospitality, warmth, and professionalism that Marriott is known for.
The hotel’s location is convenient, situated approximately two blocks from the ocean and within a comfortable ten-minute walk to the beach. I selected this property rather than the oceanfront Marriott due to the significantly lower point redemption rate. Given Marriott’s common practice in many markets around the world of allowing guests to utilize amenities at nearby sister properties, I was surprised to learn that guests of this Sheraton are not permitted to use the pool at the nearby SpringHill Suites, despite both properties being owned by the same company and located only a short distance apart. Since the Sheraton itself does not offer an outdoor pool, providing reciprocal pool access would be a meaningful guest benefit and would better align with the spirit of the Marriott brand.
The Executive Lounge on the 11th floor was another area that fell below expectations. Milena, the lounge attendant, was exceptionally warm and personable and provided excellent service. However, the food offerings were limited and of questionable appeal. During the evening service, the selections included a corn fritter-style item and an egg roll filled with cream cheese and jelly. The lounge also lacked a restroom, and coffee service consisted of coffee held in thermoses rather than freshly brewed options. While the morning offerings were somewhat better, they remained significantly below the standards of executive lounges I have visited internationally.
Breakfast at Vidalia’s was similarly disappointing. Due to low occupancy, there was no buffet service available. My poached eggs arrived significantly overcooked, with fully set yolks, and the avocado toast lacked flavor and seasoning. My wife ordered the chicken and waffles and found the chicken under-seasoned and lacking flavor. While she enjoyed the hot honey drizzle, it was just a drizzle. When she went to add more, she realized they gave her standard maple syrup… not the hot honey.
Service in the restaurant also felt rushed. The server requested our breakfast order immediately as we sat down, before we had even poured a cup of coffee. As we were the only guests in the restaurant at the time, the urgency seemed unnecessary. I politely explained that I preferred to enjoy some coffee before ordering, but the interaction felt more focused on expediency than hospitality.
Our Jr. Suite did not feel like a suite. It was more or less a standard room with a small extended sitting area. The room decor felt dated and one of the electrical outlets did not work. The water pressure was not great and the air-conditioning never did get the room cold enough. The Wi-Fi worked fine.
Overall, while there were several team members who provided friendly and professional service, most notably Hannah and Milena, the property fell short in several important areas, including elite recognition, food quality, lounge offerings, and overall hospitality. Given the Sheraton brand and Marriott’s reputation, I expected a considerably stronger guest experience.
