Rooms were tidy and the pool/bar staff were fantastic. The reception staff however, left a lot to be desired.
Three of our party got food poisoning around 5 days into our stay, instead of trying to be helpful, the hotel went on the defensive. They went as far as examining a pizza box we left outside our door and insinuated that we were still eating despite having food poisoning. I advised that my daughter was the one who wasn’t unwell and we did still have to feed her. The front desk staff were unprofessional, unhelpful, negligent of their clients and if I could give this hotel less than 1 star I would. Absolutely avoid.

This hotel was all about the view for us. We had booked a room with a sea view and it was definitely worth it. We normally stay at small family run hotels so this was a change for us but overall this hotel didn't disappoint. Our room was bright and spacious and the pool is a very good size with plenty of sunbeds and when we did spend time around the pool it was nice to have the quieter garden area with sunbeds at the front of the hotel but with easy access to the pool. We did not have any complaints about the food overall. There was plenty of choice at breakfast and a four course meal in the evening except for the two evenings when there was a buffet. The waiters were great and very attentive. We would agree with some earlier reviews that mention the chipped crockery (salad bowls in the evening) which we do not think is acceptable in any hotel and we also had a bathroom door that did not shut properly and a shaving mirror that was not well fixed to the wall but these were minor issues overall and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio. Sorrento is a good base to explore the Amalfi coast. We spent a day and two mornings exploring Sorrento - the shops, Marina Grande harbour, the view of the Bay of Naples from the Villa Communale park is a definite must see and enjoying an iced cold latte whilst people watching. The free shuttle bus from the hotel was very welcome and we never had any difficulty getting a seat on this despite it being the high season. We would also recommend boat trips to Amalfi/Positana and Capri/Anacapri - all very busy but the views are beautiful especially from Capri/Anacapri - chairlift is a must in Anacapri if you do not have a fear of heights. We would also recommend the day excursion to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius - its a tough climb to the top of Mount Vesuvius but worth it for the view of Naples and the crater itself. We had a very enjoyable week in Sorrento and the Grand Vesuvio was a good base for our stay.
