Location
Not really up to the usual five star standard of an Intercontinental hotel
It’s a beautiful hotel in the New Town and I was very excited to be staying here.
Made to feel very welcome on arrival.
My room was in the new part of the hotel, it was comfortable but the noise from the road at night was significant.
I paid for access to the lounge. The service in there is lovely but the canapés for evening meal were a bit underwhelming. Breakfast in the morning though was excellent, tasty and plentiful.
I rarely leave negative reviews, but unfortunately our stay at the InterContinental Edinburgh was one of the more disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had.
Upon check-in, we informed the receptionist that my fiancé has a severe dairy allergy and asked if the kitchen could be notified in advance as a precaution. We were told that we would need to inform the chef ourselves each time, which felt dismissive given the seriousness of the condition and the level of service one would expect from a hotel of this standard.
We were also assigned a room with a very poor view, which was disappointing given our expectations. More concerning, however, was the level of noise—it was difficult to get a proper night’s sleep due to constant disturbances.
On another occasion, we ordered food via Uber Eats, but the lobby did not notify us when it arrived. This resulted in unnecessary delays and inconvenience, especially after a long day.
Lastly, we were charged for breakfast on the day of our arrival, even though we only checked in at 7:00 PM and did not avail of the breakfast service. We raised this with the hotel, but the charge was not reversed, which we found disappointing.
Overall, while the location and facilities may be appealing, these service lapses significantly affected our stay. I hope the management can take these points into consideration to improve the guest experience moving forward.
Our first visit to this hotel. We stayed for 2 nights and I have to say, from the point of view of the room and general feel, it's one of the best hotels we've stayed in. It is clean and well kept, has a lovely ambiance and staff are very attentive and helpful. Our room was very well appointed and the bed was really comfortable.
There was a great range of choice available at breakfast but he only disappointment for us was the hot buffet section of the breakfast offering and also the coffee from the a la carte menu. The main issue was temperature. Plates were cold and, with the exception of the tomatoes the rest of the food was look warm at best meaning, after it was put on the cold plate, it was basically cold. This was the same issue on both days we had breakfast. Same with the a la carte coffee. On the second day we ordered 2 flat whites but, when it came, the cup was only 2/3 full and again the coffee was only warmish. We found out later that the a la carte coffees came from a push button machine and weren't made barista style.
I realise that some people are not bothered about whether food is hot or not but a simple solution could be to provide a microwave for folks to use if they want hot food.
The service at the George is top notch. The hotel is lovely and the generous breakfast buffet each morning was a real treat. Unfortunately a member of our party had a medical emergency during our stay. The staff was phenomenal, they were kind, caring, and really there for us during an extremely difficult time. I cannot thank them enough or express fully my deep appreciation.
Breakfast was fine
Rooms
Excellent location about 200m from St Andrews Square. Very nice staff and plenty of Kilts
The bedrooms are small as its a period property, the bar isn’t in reception its very separate
We have stayed multiple times over the last 6 months. The hotel is gorgeous. Rooms are tastefully decorated and extremely comfy. Great showers, luxurious toiletries.
What really makes the hotel is the staff. Everyone is very friendly and helpful, especially Niki in the club lounge and Rhiannon at reception. Both always make our stays great.
Breakfast has a good selection. The restaurant at night has a decent menu and really tasty food. One of the best steaks we've had.
The big let down for the hotel is the Club Intercontinental lounge. The lounge is comfy but the offering is much more limited than all the other Intercontinental lounges we've been in. "Afternoon tea" is the same selection of cakes and dry scones every day, no sandwiches or anything savoury. Hardly afternoon tea. The evening selection is also drastically smaller than at other IC properties and only has a couple of cold items with some cheese and salad items. Compared to other InterContinental hotels, im shocked this lounge meets their brand standards.
We have moved some of our m future bookings in Edinburgh to other hotels with a better lounge offering.
Walking distance to everything! Huge room with all of the bells and whistles - including a heated towel bar in the bathroom, water, tea, and snacks, but the people were what made it 10/10! From the fantastic ladies at the front desk to the gents who took care of our bags and recommended the best pubs, it was an amazing experience!
