We stayed in Quinta Jardins do Lago for six nights in late March.
The hotel is situated approximately 1.5km from Funchal town centre, located in a higher residential area, and enjoying a peaceful setting within its tranquil grounds.
The gardens themselves are a delight. Everywhere you look there are beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees, all immaculately tended. Clearly a lot of love goes into maintaining the extensive grounds, and this comes through when strolling around and looking at all the plants.
The original Quinta itself houses the restaurant and breakfast room, amongst other spaces, and really is a lovely building. Our room was on the third (top) floor overlooking the gardens. It was spacious and very comfortable, the shower was over the bath. We was lovely to sit on our balcony and listen to the birds, with the view to our left being of the hills surrounding Funchal. At night it was nice to see the twinkling lights of the town. The room and corridors were immaculately clean, always smelling fresh and polished.
We felt our room was good value for money, given the high quality and luxurious nature of the hotel.
We very much enjoyed the peace and quiet that the hotel afforded. It was serene throughout. This, together with the very comfortable bed, made for a good night’s sleep each night.
Every member of staff was delightful and helpful. The driver of the free shuttle, Marcelino, was exceptionally helpful and amenable, a real credit to the team. He drove us into town several times, and picked us up from town to take us back to the hotel on a couple of occasions. The provision of this shuttle was a really helpful service, operating several times a day. The last pick up from the harbour was at 5.45pm.
The swimming pool was a lovely, calm space, the water a nice temperature. There is a poolside bar from which one can order drinks from one’s lounger. We enjoyed our lunch we had there.
We thoroughly recommend this lovely hotel, and we are sure to return.
We have never been so sad to leave a hotel before. We felt so comfortable in such beautiful and peaceful surroundings and were so looked after by an amazing team of staff that literally could not do enough for you, that we just didn’t want to leave!! We were already planning our return before we had even left!! Which then actually came true when our flight was cancelled and the staff welcomed us back with open arms for another 2 nights before we had to leave again. Everyone, without exception, works to make sure you have the best experience possible and the hotel itself is a botanical oasis that you don’t want to leave. The rooms and the comfort and the amenities and the views are amazing. The highlight of the holiday for us was the superb restaurant and the catering team that looked after us like family. Compliments to the amazing chef and his team in the kitchens for the incredible food that we ate every day from breakfast, to lunch and the evening meals that were beyond special. And love and thanks to the friends we made in António and his team, with special places in our hearts for Solange and her most beautiful and genuine smile that greeted us every time, for Vanessa and Andrea and Chega and Vitor and Fabio too. With love and thanks also to Marta and Barbara for seeing to our every need and granting our special requests, as well as their thoughtful gift of champagne and chocolates to help us celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and to the superb standards maintained by the incredibly hardworking house keeping team as well. Let’s not forget the gardeners and maintenance team who we saw never stopped working to keep the hotel and its grounds looking it’s best. We absolutely fell in love with Quinta Jardins Do Lago and we also fell in love with Madeira too. We WILL return to this hotel for sure!!
Lured by the promise of sub tropical gardens and birdsong we chose to stay at QJdL. What an inspired choice! The birds and and the gardens were an oasis of calm coloured by an array of beautiful planting. But that was only the beginning. Our garden room was light and spacious. The small private patio was perfect for tea and sunrise. Breakfasts were an indulgence and dinner was unpretentious fine dining. The jewels in the crown are the staff. Gardeners, chamber maids, maintenance, waiters, cooks, desk staff and drivers, without exception, are the heart and soul of this fabulous hotel.
We have just spent a week here and I must say it was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. Are room was beautiful and well looked after. The Gardens were absolutely gorgeous, and the breakfast was stunning. We would HIGHLY recommend this hotel.
Wunderbare grüne Oase mit herrlichem Garten
This was our second stay on the island and in this hotel. We decided that we didn't need to look elsewhere. A comfortable stay was important to us but even more important than that, was the friendly service. We were treated as very special, as if we were the only people there. Thank you - we will come again.
Great breakfast and a beautiful location. Service is excellent!
The lunch menu at the pool wasn’t too good but that is a minor thing.
We absolutely loved this hotel. Fabulous staff who were friendly and helpful. Delicious food. Beautiful gardens. Spacious rooms and great facilities. Useful courtesy bus to Funchal seafront.
Blissful peace, pure air, vibrant nature , magnificent coasts and breathtaking landscapes, historic heritage and very friendly population: Madeira offers all of this. This wonderful island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean indeed stands for tranquillity, health, culture and a warm welcome! All these qualities are fully present in the 18th century mansion Quinta Jardins do Lago! Who seeks out peace and quiet, pure air, excellent food, condition training and cultural enrichment find exactly what he was looking for in this little oasis. This stately estate from 1750, within walking distance of the lively city centre of Funchal in a quiet part of the city full of historic relics, is offering since it’s conversion into a boutique hotel in 2000 excellent accommodation in very spacious and comfortable rooms with a terrace overlooking the ocean and 3 hectares of botanical gardens with no less than 850 species of Madeira’s rich flora. Besides the old vegetable garden of this estate is supplying fresh vegetables to the Beresford restaurant where refined dining in the rich culinary Madeira tradition is served in elegant rooms where antiques and refined flavours create a unique experience.
This hotel offers also sports-and leisure facilities: a swimming pool,a hot tub, sauna, a fitness room, a sunbathing area, a bar and a library are ensuring the fulfilment of the most demanding clientele to such an extent that many guests do not leave this little paradise to enjoy all this including the presence of the house mascot, the 69-years old Galapagos tortoise.
The Quinta thus amply deserves it’s 5-stars rating that has been given equally thanks to the highly driven team of extremely friendly and competent staff who is permanently on standby for adequate service to those fortunates to belong to the privileged clientele of this timeless haven where nature thrives and elegance endures!

We were recommended this hotel by friends who rated it highly and we were not disappointed. Everything was as we hoped it would be and more and we do hope to return soon. We were particularly impressed by the friendly staff and the beautiful gardens.
atmosfera stupenda, tutto perfettamente connesso. Gli arredi, il giardino, la colazione, la camera. Attenzione a ogni dettaglio. Bistrot a bordo piscina apero dal mattino. Girdino bellissimo e curatissimo.

This is an exceptional hotel. The staff are fantastic, the grounds are incredibly beautiful and the quality of the food is first class. One of the cleanest hotels we've ever stayed at - every surface sparkling and walls look freshly painted - even the stairwell between floors. The very highest standards of housekeeping. Breakfast is very good indeed, both in terms of the quality of the produce and the setting on a verandah or in a large Georgian style dining room with soft morning sunlight flooding through the windows. The whole of the hotel and grounds have a peaceful relaxing feel and although fully booked, did not feel crowded in the least with plenty of comfortable soft seating in the hotel and gardens, including plenty of sun loungers and a quiet pool area. Our suite was also totally silent at night - no traffic noise, no noise from other rooms and no noise from air conditioning etc - a rarity with most hotels even though the room temperature was perfect. One of our group was coeliac and it's worth noting the provision of gluten free food was, again, exceptional - a bespoke fresh bread basket including the best GF croissant our coeliac diner had ever experienced anywhere. The staff really go out of their way to accommodate anything to make the stay more comfortable. One of our group was celebrating a landmark birthday and this was noted as our passports were presented at check in (and later, we were presented with a cake, a letter from the staff and glasses of champagne!). There was live music in the bar most nights, of a genre tailored towards the older age group of guests present during our stay. The jewel in the crown is the garden. Extensive, beautiful botanical gardens, full of butterflies and even a giant Galapagos island tortoise - Colombo. The immediate setting of the grounds are the best of any hotel we've ever stayed at. A truly stress-free place to stay - quiet, relaxing and utterly beautiful, with service to match.
There is very little to criticise here. Although an ironing board is available at reception, rooms should come equipped with their own at this price point. The restaurant is a white linen tablecloth fine dining establishment with very attentive service (and prices to match). Although there is not a strict dress code, it's worth noting that diners are generally more formally dressed here (jackets, long trousers etc although there was no problem welcoming me in jeans and trainers, I did feel conspicuously more undressed than the majority of diners and it's not a place for t shirts, shorts and sandals - this may or may not be an issue for you). The daytime bistro by the pool is more casual and it would be nice to have a more casual option at night both for dining and clothing (the absence of which was the only reason for us to eat elsewhere most evenings). Quality is excellent though and I only mention this to clarify. We couldn't find any suitable bars or restaurants within short walking distance, so used Bolt to get a cab down to the marina at night (the hotel provides a free complimentary minibus shuttle up until about 6pm). The hotel is such a beautiful place though, that there is little incentive to venture anywhere else other than to seek a more casual dining experience (and menu). Finally, price has to be mentioned. Ours was a very expensive stay, although you definitely get what you pay for.
The hotel is situated in a beautiful garden approximately a 7 minute car ride from downtown.
It is quiet and peaceful, and the hotel workers are very kind and helpful. Breakfast is very nice , and dinners are equally good.
We visited the hotel during the carnaval. First, excellent hotel staff that helped us in every thing we needed!!!. big and beautiful room, excellent breakfast and beautiful gardens .
Very pleasant hotel, rooms clean and comfortable, food excellent with an interesting choice of menus on full board.
My wife and I spent 9 nights here recently and we would have to agree with all the other recent reviews, everything was excellent. The hotel and its setting within the beautiful extensive garden is wonderful, as are the amazing views overlooking Funchal. It is a little way out from the centre of Funchal, but there is a shuttle bus from the hotel and it is also possible to walk to the centre, although walking back can be rather challenging as it is a very steep hill! Taxis are quite reasonable. All the hotel staff are exceptional, so helpful and friendly. Overall, we had a fantastic holiday.
