just called the hotel to make a reservation and the person who answered the phone sweared at me.He didn't give his name and said that he is the manager when I asked to speak to the manager. Very disturbing attitude. Going to make a complaint to Expedia as well. DATE IS 16/07/2026.TIME AROUND 11.30AM

Location. Responsiveness of staff. Good value. Comfortable bed.

The location was good, near the highway and walking distance to restaurants.

Stayed at Gateway Lodge on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during a trip to Carmel Beach and Point Lobos. The price was very reasonable compared to other hotels in the area.

Although it’s a bit farther from the main tourist spots, the location worked well for me since it’s close to a bus station, which made getting around quick and convenient.

Check-in was fast and easy, and the staff were polite and friendly. The room was clean, the bathroom was tidy, and the bed was comfortable especially after a long day at the beach.

Overall, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, comfortable, budget-friendly place to stay near Monterey Bay.

Clean and comfortable! Nice stay!

We arrived around 9:45pm and the front desk was still open. The room was nice and clean and had all the basic amenities you'd expect. The bed was big and comfy. It was a great deal for the price. The only real negative was that the room's coffee maker seemed to be on the fritz. Overall I would recommend staying here.

My husband and I stayed at the Gateway Lodge for 10 nights from 5th – 14th May. We had stayed two years before and found it good quality. It has subsequently been refurbished and is now of excellent quality and very, very good value.
We had a ground floor room with ensuite shower room near reception.
The room was very spacious – far better than our usual experience in motels and hotels. This is important for us as we require ample floor space for our inflatable kayak, scuba diving equipment, and extensive camera equipment and tripods
My husband has cataracts, and often finds it difficult to find things and use facilities in most hotel and motel rooms. At the Gateway the lighting was excellent in both the main room and the shower room. It was bright, and had no areas where you had to try and work in your shadow.
All the amenities – shower, microwave and fridge worked well.
Ledges by each side of the bed meant we had our phones and reading materials close at hand rather than having to put them on the floor.
There were ample plug sockets – very important to us to charge batteries for all our equipment. We have bulky British three pin plugs and there were enough sockets for us to use adaptors to charge most of our appliances at the same time.
We also appreciated having a table and chair so we could work on our laptops, and a comfortable chair to sit and read and watch the television.
There was a good long rail to hang our clothing – important given the length of our stay.
The reception staff were always welcoming and helpful. The room was very clean when we arrived. We don’t want cleaning services during our stay because of all our fragile equipment.
Finally the location also suited us very well. We mainly self cater when we are away, and a shopping centre with Lucky and Target were less than half a mile away. A long white sand beach was just beyond the shopping centre and we were able to have a very good 2 mile walk barefoot next to the sea.

I rarely give 5 star ratings, but in this case it is well deserved.

Close to a lot of shops and food spots, cute decor, and there’s a pokestop nearby lol
