Firstly, there are some very good points to this hotel, in particular its location close to Old Dubrovnik and views of the sea from public rooms.
However, you should insist for sea view, otherwise you could be looking at a concrete wall, car park and a very very busy road, so buy some ear plugs. Do not accept a room on 7th floor with an even number.
Check in was poor with lack of advice and hardly a warm welcome, although some staff were delightful and helpful around beach cafe/restaurant area. They need to move to the front desk.
Our room was small and tired, lacking attention to detail with stained carpet, mould around sink and scuffed walls, but you do get a chocolate at bedtime on the first night! The rooms are looking tired and carpets looking threadbare and faded. Cleaning of room is also well below standard you would expect of 3* hotel, never mind 5*.
We put in a complaint to our tour operator, who were fabulous and dealt with our concerns. We got moved to a quieter room promptly and the young porter was great. There are some lovely staff here, and some who need a course in people skills.
I think management need to manage better and monitor where there is a lack of attention and quality of service, otherwise staff can not improve. Gym facilities very limited, tired and poorly maintained. Jacuzzi out of action all week.
This was our first visit to Croatia and we will be back, but sadly not to this hotel. We are feeling slightly bruised, as we thought that by selecting one of the high end hotels in Dubrovnik, we were in for a 5* treat. I have stayed in nicer 3* hotels. Sorry Argentina, you must do better than this!
Really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The pool area is stunning. Although a couple of times the Adriatic ended up in the pool, and made it a bit slippery. The pool guys work incredibly hard, Nicky was fab, getting sun beds in the right place, and towels, great service.
The breakfast was nice, and the views overlooking the Adriatic and the walled city are second to none. For location it could'nt be better, just a 10 minute downhill walk to Dubrovnik walled city.
If you are staying a week or more it's well worth getting the Dubrovnik pass, it gets you entry on the wall, and several museums and galleries. Also free bus pass within limited areas. It's well worth going to Catvat on a boat trip, very pretty, and much cheaper than Dubrovnik. Overall a great stay. The gelato is fab too.
Amazing views. Right on sea. Great breakfast
The service from all the staff was 5 star throughout our stay. In particular, we appreciated being able to choose our own breakfast dishes with waiter service.
I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area!!!!
We stayed a week in a deluxe room, in the newer part of the hotel with a balcony and sea view. The room was spacious and in the main well equipped, the bathroom similar and clean but just a little tired, some discoloured and cracked sealant around the shower screen.
The bed was large and comfy and daily room servicing excellent.
Our room had spectactular views over the Adriatic towards Lokrum Island and Dubrovnik to the side, great sunsets. The breakfast was very good with a wide choice and helpful staff if we wanted anything made particularly, we had omelletes to order a couple of times. I have celiac disease so I eat a gluten free diet and was pleased to find a dedicated gluten free table with various cereals, a fresh loaf of bread, sweet breads and cakes. All gluten free and well stocked every day. Added to the already gluten free options it provided a wide choice.
The outside pool area and access to swim in the sea (its deep mind) is very good. Really helpful staff and always a couple of free sunbeds. There is an excellent terrace restaurant, great for lunch, that also provides a poolside service. The gardens are a surprise and worth exploring, they stretch across the neighbouring hotels with lots of quiet spots to relax.
Overall I really liked this hotel, I can see why some feel it may not be true 5 star but it has charm, the staff in my experience were excellent and the gripes are small ones.
So to the gripes, there was no coffee or tea making facility in our room, there was a door stop positioned behind the bathroom door but directly in front of the toilet so you needed to be constantly aware of it or put a towel over it to protect your toes particularly in the middle of the night. The service in the piano bar in the evenings was at times painfully slow and out of keeping with the breakfast team.
I would definitely stay again if I could and would recommend the Grand Villa Argentina.
My husband and I have wanted to stay at the hotel for some time and our recent 5 night stay did not disappoint
The staff at the hotel are exceptional
A special mention to the lovely young waiter Dominik who was always so smily and chatty and Vedran the charming waiter at the beach restaurant
And not forgetting Nicky who has worked at the pool terrace for years and gave us many recommendations and is such an amazing character!
The hotel for us was perfectly positioned - the pool terrace gives direct access to the sea and there was always an available sun bed ( unlike some hotels we have recently visited where there have been sunbed wars !! ) and the city is a pleasant 10 min downhill stroll
It is such a shame that the hotel will be closed next year for refurbishment as we would definitely have returned, just like so many people we met during our stay who had returned to the hotel year after year
My only hope is that it is not changed too much as the faded grandeur of the hotel sets it apart from its modern soulless neighbour the 5star Excelsior
Needsc room refurbishment, particularly bathrooms.Carpeting have spots and old.Poor AC
A magical & memorable weekend with balcony views of the Adriatic Sea & Dubrovnik Old Town. We stayed in one of the newly renovated villas in the historic palazzo building & had personal concierge service as well as personal chef at the villa terrace restaurant who cooked up whatever we wanted for breakfast fresh. Like a second honeymoon for my husband & me. Highly recommend! Hvala!
We had a truly lovely time at this hotel last week. Spotless. Bedding and towels changed each day, even tho we would have re used towels. Little surprise arrives each evening ! Staff attentive and friendly. It’s a 15 min walk to Old Town, where all the restaurants are. Little up hill on way back. We only had the lovely breakfast at the hotel on a beautiful terrace with views. Would recommend.
My husband and I had a wonderful two night stay. The staff were attentive. We booked a classic room and were delighted to have a free upgrade to a sea view room. We had a wonderful and relaxing late lunch on the outdoor terrace when we arrived and the staff were very welcoming. The pool area was great with a saltwater pool and access to the Adriatic. Beautiful views of the Old Town. The restaurants were pricey in the evening. We ate in the Old Town on our second night which is a pleasant 15 minute walk away. Breakfast was busy as it was peak summer season but every option of food you could wish for including prosecco. We would have loved to stay longer and hope to return. P.s. I can't understand the negative reviews!
On arrival we noticed the name sign over the hotel entrance read ‘illa Argentina’ - not a great look, especially for a 5 star hotel.
The positives - book a sea view superior room. Large and comfortable enough for two.
Views stunning. Lots of choice at breakfast and staff attentive.
Pool area kept clean and Nikky runs the show. Nothing is too much to ask. If you need a lounger and none are free, a space will be found for you.
Steps down into the sea mean you can swim in the Adriatic whilst watching the kayakers paddle by along with the Uber expensive super yachts.
Negatives - hotel is a little tired and could do with a refurb.
The main lift had a cracked tile and also a cracked mirror which had been duct taped over - not very professional.
Tea in room only replenished periodically. We had to leave a note for hand wash to be refilled which was done immediately to be fair.
Front of house not very welcoming and when we checked out we were not asked if we’d had a good stay, in fact not much communication.
On two occasions were at the poolside restaurant. Food nothing to write home about, but service was very good.
Eat in old town - lots of choice and all a good standard.
Should say that the hotel is situated just a short walk from Dubrovnik old town so ideally placed for a holiday to this beautiful city.
Highly recommended then facility, the food was great, staff was courteous, and their beach was a piece of heaven!
We had a wonderful room with balcony overlooking the sea and also the Old Town was in view. Only a few minutes walk and you are in the heart of the Old Town. The buffet breakfast was excellent and the staff looked after you. Will definitely be staying there again.
Not a 5 star property and not 5 start service. Great location and lovely access to the sea swimming area.
This is an average hotel. Let’s start with the good. Location and breakfast options are spot on. However the rooms are small and tired and the in hotel dining is disastrous. Some of the weakest hotel dining I’ve ever eaten. And worse still it’s expensive.
If you stay here then manage your expectations. It’s a fair place to stay for a couple of nights. But eat out.
If you dont want to be kicked out few weeks prior to your arrival, dont book it. I booked this property back in February 2023 for my clients for September 2023 , few weeks prior to arrival my clients are forced to stay at different property.
Fantastic location, overlooking the ocean and Lokrum Island with the enchanting old Dubrovnik City just a few hundred yards away to its right. Public area including the reception, as well as the outside pool, are of a good standard too. Spotlessly clean everywhere. Breakfast is excellent with large buffet choice as well as a selection of freshly made items (pancakes, omelettes, poached eggs etc.) that will fill you.
Downsides? Room was too small, with little space for bags, clothes etc. Coffee provided in room but not refilled, similar situation with shower gel etc. However, they turn up when requested. Few people appear for dinner at night in their main restaurant so no atmosphere, therefore better to visit one of the many good restaurants only a short walk away from the hotel.
Staff generally helpful.
Overall, was a pleasant stay in a hotel five star in parts, but certainly not all parts.
The rooms on the street side are very dark. The accommodation is in major need of a refurb, especially the bathrooms. Highlights for me were the access to the warm, clear water from the hotel wall and the extensive breakfast options with very attentive staff.
The view at this hotel cannot be beaten, the pool/beach area looks over the old town and Lokrum island which is just amazing, but the hotel is in dire need of a renovation and food upgrade.
On our arrival we were upgraded to the Grand Villa Argentina. This was the start of a genuine 5 star experience. Our room was spacious, airy with an efficient air-con. The bathroom was exquisite , enhanced with top quality toiletries. The room had a balcony with a view of the sea and of Dubrovnik town. The service from all the staff was 5 star throughout our 6 night stay. In particular, we appreciated being able to choose our own breakfast dishes with waiter service. The location of the hotel is a strong point- it is only a short walk to the town and all its attractions. Overall, a most pleasant and enjoyable stay. A well deserved 5 star rating. We highly recommend it.
