Lovely hotel but something remains a mystery, my partner and I went 4 years ago roughly, walked in the reception part, into the lounge, we both swear blind the square section of the ceiling on the far left side as you walk in was open and you could look straight up into an old victorian like library with the old brass banister bar and wooden ladder etc, we went up the grand stairs to the first floor, looked though an ornate door and walked around this beautiful timeless library looking down the middle to the lounge on the ground floor,
We went a couple of years later, no library, no recollection of a library from the staff, walked in the lounge, ceiling all the way over, but that square part didnt match the rest of the ceiling decor... you tell me...
Location - was wonderful. Placed handily between Queensway and Bayswater tube stations, you have multiple routes available to you within 2 minutes walk. The Queensway (road) is full of restaurants. Hyde park is over the road. Kensington Palace a few minutes walk away. The location is superb.
Check in and out - very easy and quick, staff looked after our suitcases until we couldcome back to check in properly.
Lifts: a bit dodgy. Sometimes one didn't work. Sometimes one didn't make it to the floor. OH well, one of the two always worked.
Room - we had a beautiful suite. It was sensational. The Lilly Langtry suite is expensive, but extremely roomy and has a huge bathroom. The room was wonderful and warm, despite the freezing cold weather.
Pleasantly decorated with old worlde furniture, though...I did think that some of it was a bit tooooo old and delapidated, and though very pretty, was a bit past it's best without repairs or replacement.
Bed: was not the king size (australian king size) as I'd expected. It was an Australian Queen size. Beware, if you need a wide bed. It was fine, very comfortable, and pillows nice.
Bathroom: had a delightful bath, and a lovely big shower. Two vanities. My only complaint was that I nearly fell off the 'upper level' of tiles multiple times, a 25cm drop, edged in black,...with black and white tiles, it should be edged in the lighter colour. It's very deceptive, and I bet there will be an accident one day. Oh, and the water....we couldn't get the shower hot. Not anywhere near hot. I didn't mention it, it was warm. I just made it quick.
breakfast - Breakfast was a very nice spread of all different things, hot and cold. Very pleasant and plenty of tables.
However, I have to mention a couple of things.
1. Staff at the front desk were often rather reluctant to help. No-one looked very pleased to be there, or enthusiatic. I asked one to help with a restaurant booking, as I didn't have voice call on my phone. She said "oh, we don't usually do that." REally? EVERY hotel I've ever been in would gladly ring to book a table for an overseas guest. I was stunned. She did, eventually, but the reluctance was poor.
2. staffing: three mornings I was taken aback by the mammoth line of guests waiting for breakfast. One morning we waited in line for over 35 minutes. It's appalling.
First, the head lady was working like a trojan. She worked so hard, I felt sorry for her, trying to manage the list, the book, the queue, and the clearing and resetting. Her staff were disorganised and I could see they weren't supporting her, AND she needed about 5 more staff on those busy mornings. I watched as one table was wiped down 3 times by 3 different people, but never reset, as were 2 other tables, while there were 50 people waiting outside the door. It was breathtakingly bad. I know...it's busy. But food ran out, no eggs, no pastries, no beans, ....not toast. replaced slowly, and when we were already finished.
The poor woman needs more staff for 2-3 hours, each with a specific main task. I to clear, 1 to reset, 1 to replenish...and they need bigger trays. It was painful to watch, and people were annoyed. It added 35 minutes one day to our timing, which was tight, and we missed our train. Lucky I had a flexible ticket.
Oh well, we enjoyed our stay enormously, it's just...the boss needs to consider the poor lady at breakfast.
Gute Lage.
Heruntergefahren. Renovation nötig.
Zimmer roch nach Schimmel.
Schlange für Frühstück von ca 20 Personen.
Prima ontbijt. Nog veel oude details in het hotel. Mooie trappenhal, mooie ontbijtzaal.
Location good
Room was tiny. We had a club room which was in the basement with no view. Just a window covered with pigeon poo. The shower was tiny and you could hardly turn in it.No Wi-Fi in the basement. It felt like a prison cell and the aircon didn't cool the room down. The worst hotel we have ever stayed in.
The building was very impressive
Very grand both inside and out, almost palatial inside.
The room was like a rabbit hutch and the bathroom was bordering dangerous.
The shower cubicle was very narrow (700x700) and eleven inches off the floor
The hotel is very well located across the road from Kensington gardens we enjoyed a stroll. The bedrooms are very compact but clean 👌. The bed very comfortable. One very good plus the breakfast is definitely a 10 out of 10 excellent. The room was lovely.
The bedroom is compact the bathroom is tiny but very clean and shower is good
Tolles, altes Hotel.
Buona colazione. Gentilezza e cortesia del personale. Numerosi ristoranti, locali e negozi vicino all'hotel.
Per il prezzo pagato la camera era un po piccola con letto alla francese, ma comodo. Il bagno era dotato ancora di una vecchia vasca che fungeva anche da doccia. La coda mattutina per la colazione.
Location fantastic. Breakfast very good, although had to queue beforehand. Room basic but all we needed. Beautiful building.
