Our third stay….we really enjoy this place! Staff is professional and friendly! The room we occupied was due for a new AC unit. Front desk staff notified us, the job was done in record time (2+ hours). Perfectly done, room cleaned and unit worked nicely. Not advertised but consider a massage with Maria! The lower level has a sweet spa. The crowning area is the rooftop bar area! Times vary seasonally but generally open most days, weather permitting. During winter months there may be live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday. New for us, a nice lite bite menu. Perfect way for after dinner beverages or night caps. Views are fabulous especially during a full moon!
Two blocks from every assumed want is a beautiful relax and private beach. The rooftop bar pairs sounds of the sea beneath with understated live trios at sunset. Cocktails are above and beyond, as is the staff. Truly, stay here and walk everywhere you want to experience. I promise you, this is where you want to lay your head.
We loved staying here. There are only 20 rooms (get one with a view). The hotel was fully booked, yet we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Wonderful, huge pool (but wish it was heated; tolerable now but not sure how it'll be by January). Picturesque beach in front of hotel, but cannot go in water here. The whole island really only has 2 usable beaches (Playa Norta and Playa Centro) as the island is surrounded by rock and coral. We could walk to Playa Norta, less than a block away. Only 2-3 blocks to Hidalgo Avenue where there is everything.
Special mention to Eunice and Eileen, who were extra kind to us, though whole staff was wonderful. Marie in spa gives incredible massages (and I am picky). Loved the rooftop bar every late afternoon. The hotel is spotless and up to date. Also very quiet and felt secluded, despite everything being easily in walkable distance. We met others there who were on their 8th and 12th trip to this hotel. We will return!
Beautiful hotel tucked away on the north coast of the island. Near restaurants and cafes and Playa Norte but has its own lovely pool and little beach. Roof top bar is fabulous for sun downers and the staff are fantastic.
This hotel may not provide the room you select on Expedia or Booking.com. Hotel Secreto lists only three “Junior Suite” options, all advertised with a balcony, ocean and pool views, and 41 m² of space. After you book one of these, the hotel silently switches you to an unlisted Standard Room at a lower price—without informing you. This is what happened to us.
The Standard Room has no balcony, no view, and is extremely small, and it is not listed as a bookable option on Expedia & Booking.com. The hotel switches you to this room then claims you only paid for a Standard Room, relying on guests not remembering the room they selected. When you check your Expedia or Booking.com reservation afterward, the room type, size, and details are missing—yet the listing still shows “balcony” under “Facilities,” which the hotel says this refers to a balcony somewhere on the property, not in your room. This “switcheroo” is misleading and dishonest.
The hotel admitted:
- Standard Rooms cannot be booked on Booking.com or Expedia
- Guests must contact them directly to book that room type.
- Many guests complain after arriving to find no balcony or view and a tiny room.
- They blame Expedia & Booking.com for the issue (but they have the control to list the Standard Room as an option on these sites. They are just dishonest and it is a way to reel people in by promising a view, a balcony and a larger room then not delivering).
Extremely amazing staff. Angel is literally an angel. Every one that works here is just a pleasure.
Please visit the rooftop bar and get an espresso martini from my friend Angel.
Rooms are beautiful. Views are fantastic. A true hidden gem
Beach rocky, hotel good for price. Room comfortable and quiet.
This hotel is a hidden gem, located a short walk from all the action and top beaches, but tucked away in a quiet alcove with a stunning pool that overlooks a deserted beach, which I had to myself whenever I wanted it.
Everything is spotlessly clean. The lovely staff are super-friendly and helped with dinner recommendations, found a therapist to give me a massage within 10 minutes, even though it was the usual ladies day off and couldn’t be friendlier. The bar by the pool makes delicious (strong!) cocktails.
The gym is quite basic (and very hot - give it 10 mins for the AC and all the fans to take effect!!!) but does what it needs to do (unless you’re after cardio).
Loved it so much I stayed an extra night. Strong recommendation!
We had a fantastic time in this hotel. Centrally located.
The roof top bar was awesome. Sunset views were amazing.
Service was very good.
Millie and Angel were very kind and helpful; outstanding service from them.
The staff are positive and very helpful. Only drawback is inability to snorkel off the beach (prohibited) but the pool is one of the nicest I've ever swam in. Rooftop bar is spectacular and the showers, beds and rooms are excellent. Will stay again next time, too. Great value for cost.
Hotel Secreto is easily one of the loveliest hotels I’ve ever stayed in!
From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed. The staff is simply wonderful; warm, kind, and incredibly helpful. We met several team members during our stay, and each one was professional, friendly, and genuinely made us feel at home. Their hospitality really set the tone for our trip!
The rooms are spacious, spotless, and offer stunning sunrise views. The rooftop is a dream, with sweeping views of the island and picture-perfect sunsets. Evenings are magical, with live music creating the perfect backdrop while you enjoy their delicious food and drinks - the calamari, in particular, was incredible.
The location is unbeatable!! Just a few minutes’ walk from North Beach, making it ideal for a romantic or peaceful getaway, or equally perfect for a trip with friends or family. Everything is so clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully designed. Hotel Secreto truly lives up to its name- a hidden gem we can’t wait to return to! Thank you for the most fabulous and unforgettable trip!
The staff was wonderful. Beautiful property.
Our stay at Hotel Secreto was absolutely magical!!! The view from our room—overlooking the serene pool and the sparkling ocean—was both breathtaking and one-of-a-kind. Every member of the staff, from the front desk to the rooftop team to housekeeping, was warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive, making us feel right at home.
The location couldn’t be more ideal—peacefully tucked away, yet just a five-minute walk from the vibrant Main Street, the stunning Playa Norte, and only ten minutes from the ferry. It’s the perfect balance of quiet luxury and convenience.
One of the highlights was enjoying sunset on the rooftop with live music on Friday evening—it was pure bliss. I’m convinced I had the best calamari of my life up there! What made our stay even more special was discovering the deeper family connections behind the hotel. The same family runs the nearby fresh-caught seafood restaurant Blue Ballyhoo and Keen M Charters, which offers unforgettable fishing and whale shark tours. We got to experience it all, and it truly enriched our trip. We also rented bikes, paddle boards, and golf cart from Hotel Secreto which made the trip so fun!!!
The best part of this experience is the excellent service from the hotel staff who are friendly, knowledgeable, and polite. Each person is very helpful and willing to assist the guest. The hotel is overall very quiet and secluded with a very short walk to shops as well as its own small beach area. It lives up to its name of El Secreto because of the tranquil setting and quietness along with the views of the sea, the turtles that lay eggs in front of the hotel, the smiles and friendly conversation of the hotel staff, the ability to reach the town by golf cart or on foot. Albeit the hotel is on the smaller side but it is also meant to be that way with an intimate setting most of the time. The top floor is the rooftop grill and bar with the most amazing 360 degree views of the sea and island. Only thing is to go swimming in the sea is you have to walk a short ways to the east or west to find the beaches where swimming is allowed. Would love to visit again.
Tucked away just off the main streets of downtown Isla Mujeres, Hotel Secreto is a true hidden gem. This secure, boutique hotel offers card-only access and a peaceful retreat from the island’s hustle and bustle.
We stayed in a first-floor room with a private patio overlooking the pool and a partial view of the ocean. It featured a table, chairs, and a cozy lounging bed—the perfect spot to unwind. The pool was a nightly favorite for us, with just the right temperature to relax under the stars while listening to the gentle sound of ocean waves. We were even lucky enough to spot sea turtles nesting along the shore—truly unforgettable!
The staff were friendly and helpful when approached, with small touches like opening the front door for us daily so we didn’t need to pull out our key card. The pool and rooftop bar attendants were also very kind and welcoming.
While the hotel is quiet and restful, two small notes: the air fresheners used throughout are a bit strong, and the room could benefit from a ceiling or portable fan.
That said, this hotel is an incredible value. The property is kept exclusive—only guests and rooftop bar patrons are allowed—which made it feel private and serene. We’ll absolutely be back when staying on the north end of the island. Highly recommended for couples or solo travelers seeking tranquility and charm.
The location is excellent. An easy walk to all of Centro and Playa Norte. The pool scene is loud. Music blaring all afternoon and guests partying in the pool at 3am. one morning making it impossible to sleep and the staff/security obviously allows it. This is definitely not a tranquil property where you can relax in silence poolside or on your patio….at least not on the days we stayed there. Service is friendly, but it all feels scripted and rehearsed. The room lacks a soul. It's very stark. We expected a much different experienced considering the price and all the positive ratings. We can only assume it may just not be the hotel it once was.
The hotel felt very secluded and had a nice sand beach area. Not a beach for swimming. Too rocky but you can walk along the sand to a nice swimming beach (Playa Norte).
Nice spa for massages.
Beautiful patio with lounge bed with an ocean view. Highly recommend booking an ocean view Rooftop restaurant/bar. Great view at sunset! Easy walk to shopping and dining. Can rent a golf cart which makes it nice!
If you’re looking for a quiet getaway but still want quick access to many dining options look no further! Hotel Secreto delivers everything it promises and more. The rooms and amenities are top notch, the staff is always willing to help, and the location lets you find your perfect balance between privacy and Isla’s bountiful nightlife. We loved our stay and will be staying here whenever we’re back!
We had a great stay at Hotel Secreto. Looking forward to visiting again.
When traveling, I like simple, understated and beautifully-designed hotels. I don’t like a “scene” and I don’t need to be fussed over. Just responded to upon request and left alone otherwise. When Ian Shrager introduced Morgan’s Hotel in New York City, it was a revelation. To find that kind of simple elegance on level of Isla Mujeres was a surprise and a true delight. The taxi pulled up in front of a beautiful, but unsigned modern building and let us out. I said “are you sure this is the Secreto?” He said yes, we walked up the steps and two women welcomed us to a simple but beautiful living room and sitting room area. Within one minute, I was in ny room, pleasantly large, simply designed with a large sitting area outside, looking out over the pool and beyond the pool to a beautiful, small private beach. The room had everything I needed, including small refrigerator and everything was perfect. Many restaurants are within walking distance and three days later, I hated to have to leave. I would not consider staying anywhere else in Cancun or Isla.
