Pleasant stay
Pros:

Stayed at The Chequers Hotel while visiting Newbury for one night. Location is excellent, check-in was seamless & staff were friendly.

The reception area is in dire need of a new carpet and a lick
Of paint. Bedrooms were nice, a little out-dated & in need of a makeover.

The food in the bar/restaurant was lovely, however breakfast wasn’t so good. It was served between 7-10 and when we arrived down at 9.30 there was very little choice so much so that the staff started clearing away breakfast at 9.40 so the choices were less.

Overall the stay was pleasent.

Poor, noisy and hot
Pros:

We attended a wedding on the day of our stay 24th July. We had to travel 2.5 hours and asked to check-in at 1PM but they insisted that we had to pay a £20 charge - as a result we had to drive straight to the wedding, which wasn’t ideal and couldn’t then check in until midnight. Our room was ground floor in the car park with single glazing and no air-conditioning…. and the fan they provided was hopeless. We couldn’t leave the window open because of the safety issue so it was like a sauna. after eventually getting to sleep - we were awoken by people pulling cases across the car park and loading their cars to leave.
The bathroom also had mould all over the shower. The description says quiet and good value…..it was neither. Breakfast wasn’t bad.

Midlands to France via ferry we stayed at Chequers on our trip out and back, overall very good.
Pros:

We were returning from our 3 weeks holiday in France and had stopped at the Chequers Hotel on our journey out. I had informed the hotel that we would be arriving late as we were returning on the cross channel ferry and expected to clear customs and arrive around 23h00. Unfortunately major roadworks around the M3 near Winchester meant we did not arrive until after midnight but no problem for the hotel, and we were received by a very friendly night porter who saw that we were well settled for the night. On this stay we stayed in one of the rooms off the car park. Comfortable night and excellent breakfast to set us on our way home.

Cons:

Over all the stay was good, nothing to dislike but just a couple of observations. One of our towels was worn and had a hole in it but, in the grand scheme of things, not a major problem. Secondly, the outer door opening on to the car park had a considerable gap through which we could see daylight, The crack was in one of the door panels. Fortunately we we travelling during an exceptional spell of hot weather so no problem. Might suggest though that the door is repaired before our typical British weather returns.

Pros:

Room was dirty , bed was damaged and uncomfortable, bathroom musty smelling and full of mould .

Cons:

The rooms ,3 were booked for our party, were dated , dusty , dirty and very tired.
Bathroom dirty , musty and mouldy. A leak in room 305 bathroom floor wet .
Bed framed damaged and mattress well past usable .
Outside ground floor rooms ,noise from upstairs and carpark .
We have stayed here many times and have always been happy but the rooms were disgusting, we only stayed the night as we didn't get into room until midnight and there was no availability anywhere near by . We left early am without using the disgusting bathroom.
Complained to the reception manager who then visited one of the rooms with us and agreed that it wasn't a exceptable standard and needed deep clean, etc. but wasn't authorised to give refund. She gave us email address to send the complaint to and said she would speak to general manager.
Nobody has had the decency to acknowledge or contact us regarding the issues .

An overnight stop that suited us and our trip.
Pros:

On our way to catch the ferry at Portsmouth so just an overnight stop. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was very good, both quality and quantity. A very interesting old hotel with history and very quirky with corridors and small stair cases throughout a really up and down trip to reach the room. I joked with the staff that it seemed the hotel was a place where you could have a hiking holiday without leaving the building - we loved it.

Cons:

No complaints

Pros:

We had a spacious family room. The breakfast was amazing. It was just a stop over for us, half way through a long journey, so it was a a good location as it wasn't far from the main road we were using.

Cons:

The photos on booking.com do not truly reflect the state of the hotel rooms and surrounding buildings. In reality, it is a very tired looking hotel with many areas in need of refurbishment in my opinion.

Perfect location at a really good price.
Pros:

Chequers is located in the heart of Newbury with immediate access to town centre, pubs and restaurants. The rooms are perfectly adequate for us to use as beds are comfortable and bathrooms have all we require.

Breakfast while self-service is always enough with a variety of cooked and cold options, accompanied by tea, coffee and juices.

Free parking at the hotel is an added bonus in this day and age.

Cons:

To be decidedly 'picky' one of rooms had a slow shower head but otherwise no other complaints.
