Lovely staff, excellent location for theatre
Pros:

Good value for money. Staff absolutely lovely. Rooms tired, a couple of broken things but clean. Great breakfast. No hairdryer

Pros:

Nice place, nice host - but our room was older I assume (room 18) dated, and the best was the least comfortable we’ve ever slept it - mattress about 1” thick. However the other rooms look nicer.
Breakfast was very nice.

Good, will stay there again I hope
Pros:

Bed very comfortable, liked everything except ensuite - shower excellent but nowhere to put damp towels. Hot tap in basin dripping (not noisy but a waste of hotel's money!)

Overnight stay
Pros:

The staff are very helpful and polite, unfortnuately the traffic noise kept us awake during the night, the tea cups in the room hadn't been cleaned properly (ring stains from previous hot drinks) and the breakfast wasnt exactly what we pre-ordered - these are small things that can easily be corrected,.

Disappointing
Pros:

Sadly no where to park when arrived at hotel, I couldn’t even see a designated disabled bay on site. Access from street next to hotel was not suitable for anyone with mobility issues whilst the street is not the fault of the hotel the area that crossed onto their land was rubble and the path narrow this when having mobility issues is not good. The room was ok although we were right next to a pedestrian crossing so could hear that going off during evening/night. No lift stairs only. Mould in bathroom, for shower you have to clamber over a high bath especially difficult when have mobility issues (and yes this was mentioned when booking)

Portland Hotel, Buxton.
Pros:

Wonderful weekend away. Dog friendly, great location, breakfasts although pre-arranged were cooked to order. Everyone was very helpful, old fashioned style comfort, would recommend.

Pros:

The location is good, close to the pavilion gardens and a short walk from the town centre and some nice walks. The property itself was a little tired and run down but I understand they're in the process of some renovations. Our room was bright but very simple, no frills. It's a bit of a creaky building so there's a fair bit of noise from other guests moving around and the road outside can be loud when trucks are passing. The mattress wasn't the best and the shower/hot tap water pressure was terrible. The breakfast was included and was ok, nothing special but we never went hungry! However, the saving grace was the staff, they couldn't be more friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble - they even dried our clothes for us after we got back from getting caught in the rain and posted my coat to me when I left it behind in their boiler room. A very basic place to stay but with some of the best hotel staff I've encountered.

Portland Review
Pros:

Very good. Kitchen and waitress staff were ever so friendly. One downfall no air con or room fans. So bought a fan. Good location opposite a lively park and close to centre.

Pros:

Good location within a couple of mins walk of town centre. Lovely staff, very helpful. Room and breakfast both good. Car park at front of property a little small and awkward, so parking on street to rear of property may be a good option.

Pros:

Located about a 10 minute walk from the train station, and about 5 mins into the city centre. Location was perfect to see and do all I wanted.
Staff were friendly and check in quick.
Room for a single person was fine. Bathroom was a good size and bed was comfy.
Breakfast was orderly and nice, quick service too.
Only drawback was it is on a main road and it was at times during the night very noisy.

A little dated, but good service
Pros:

Stayed for just one night. Nice welcome, and clear that Covid procedures were being followed.
Have to agree with some other reviews here about the noise (room at the front) - I was fairly shattered so it didn't affect me much, but light sleepers be warned. The room was dated but clean and comfortable so fine for the price paid.
Full breakfast included - nothing exceptional but perfectly decent.

great value
Pros:

We received a warm welcome from Dale on arrival, he explained the set up for breakfast, which was excellent by the way. Checked us in quickly. There was plenty of signage and hand gel around. The room was a lovely large room with a big shower in the recently revamped bathroom. We’ve already booked again.

Noisy traffic at the front.
Pros:

Not too good at the front, very noisy traffic into early hours & the window wouldn't close. Rubbish nights sleep. Room quite big. Bathroom accessories a little rusty but could put up with that. Good price hotel just the noise lets it down. Good breakfast. They don't do evening meals but there are a few pubs, restaurants not far down the road. Not all open due to Covid but enough to choose from. Lovely pavillion park across the road to walk around.
