Villa Sonia is a beautiful authentic Italian Hotel with wonderful views of Mt Etna and the surrounding mountains and valleys. The property is quiet and large with spacious rooms and comprehensive facilities. The staff, particularly the reception staff were very professional, warm and had excellent knowledge to assist with every request.
We dined at the hotel restaurant a couple of times. While it’s pleasant with a nice interior, it’s not to the standard of the rest of the hotel. The food was okay but the staff were not so warm and obliging.
Views And food.
Small room and shower.
The location was lovely. It is away from the crowds in Taormina, and an easy bus ride to Taormina so no need to drive and find parking. The bus stop is right outside the hotel. The view of Mount Etna from the balcony was amazing, even though it looked more like a big hill due to the distance. Mount Etna was gently sending smoke into the air but we could not smell it. The charming hotel restaurant is a one minute walk, and the chef was excellent. The chef made a delicious potato soup for us that was not on the menu. We ate there a few times as it was so convenient, after full days in Taomina. The hotel is just below the village Castelmola, which is just a short walk or rather a couple of flights of stairs. It is definitely worth a visit.
Castelmola is a very beautiful village with very friendly and helpful locals. The location of the hotel makes for a very easy visit. Villa Sonia is an older hotel decorated with antiques. It looks from the outside that there are only two or three floors, But our room was on the 6th floor. It is built on a hillside. We would definitely stay here again. The staff were amazing especially David at the front desk.
There is a bar on one of the lower floors (I forget the floor number) and a breakfast terrace. It was late in October and they close at 530pm and at 5pm we visited. The Barista was busy cleaning up and so we just said good evening, and went on the terrace. He said it was closing soon. We said we just wanted to see. Unfortunately, the door was already set to lock behind us, and after no more than 5 minutes, we decided to go back inside, It was before 5:15pm, but could not get in, and all the other exits were locked with padlocks. There was minimal lighting, we banged on the glass door, but the Barista had already gone. If one of us had a medical emergency, it would have been a catastrophe. We finally found an entrance on the side, up a flight of stairs that led to bedrooms. When I told the front desk (not David), the man did not acknowledge our distress, or recognize the possible severity of the situation, and he trivialised by laughing and saying something to the effect of, it is like a treasure hunt finding the door. I am addressing this here so higher management is aware of the problem in case another older couple, are not so mobile to go on a treasure hunt. At least put a phone or emergency button on the outside.
Also the vases of flowers on the breakfast tables are a bit dusty.
Finally, every now and then, the shower drain smelled. It was not the maid, it is the internal plumbing.

We couldn’t believe how beautiful at first sight!! it seemed unreal! The view, grounds, hotel rooms, veranda are quite literally stunning. Straight views of Etna! Even from the pool.
Our rooms air conditioning was out so he switched us.. problem solved.
The breakfast was fresh & included everything you could want. The coffee was made to order & the staff was amazing. Especially Miss Carmen! Bellissima and helpful. Would stay again.
We had a nice week staying at Villa Sonia. We had deluxe room which had comfortable king size bed, in fact two of them! Wardrobe space but no drawers so we used cases on spare bed. Nice bathroom with bubbly bath and shower over. Hairdryer. Shower/shampoo and soap provided.
You can request a kettle.
Fridge, safe.
Huge balcony with lovely view of Etna which was ever changing.
Good breakfast buffet.
Pool was nice but in October cold as not heated. We sat on sun beds one afternoon.
October so some things not open, sauna, hot tub, pool bar.
We did bed and breakfast which i would recommend to allow to try out different restaurants in Taormina and Castlemola. The Cavenne belonging to the hotel has music some nights and that was really good.
Hotel staff all very helpful in recommending other restaurants in Castlemola. If you want fine dining one night, do go to Mayo in Taormina, see my review. It is new and superb.
Hotel staff recommended Etna People tour which picked up from hotel. We are fit 70s and did the Easy tour which was excellent. Some walking but not too much. Also did Italian Opera show which was very good.
Getting to beach is easy using shuttle bus, cable car. We went to Lido Planta , see review.
This hotel is in hills above the main resort but we liked it. Don't take car, difficult driving and parking everywhere. The hotel shuttle worked well. And for go and explore the lovely village with so many friendly places.
We have just come back from one of the best week's holidays we've had in years. From the moment we looked out from the terrace of our room at Etna, we were smitten. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful (and you could guarantee that the person on reception spoke fluent English - a great help to my husband and son, who don't really speak Italian). They are a really lovely team of people.
The decor is quite quirky and characterful and our rooms were a generous size. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms were clean and had possibly the first shower that my husband has ever managed to control satisfactorily on a holiday. Noise can travel from neighbouring bathrooms via the ventilation system, which took a bit of getting used to though we really didn't find this a problem.
Don't expect to find tea/coffee making facilities in your room - if you want that, you need to go down to the terrace and place an order (though be aware that the terrace bar shuts at 6) or ask for room service. As the week went on, the staff got very good at anticipating what our order was likely to be (they were pretty good at that one at breakfast time as well).
We were on half board. Some other reviews have cautioned against this, recommending trying out the many eateries in Castelmola, but we did not find it a problem. The menu was varied and the cooking excellent. Also, being a vertiginous hill village, getting up to the other restaurants does involve quite a few steps. Do be aware that even on half board, the evening meal actually takes place in the restaurant belonging to the hotel but 50 yards or so up the road, so if you have any mobility issues it may be worth noting. The house red wine at the restaurant is actually grown on a vineyard belonging to the hotel, and we would recommend it.
We went on a couple of trips while we were there, and the staff at reception were very helpful in negotiating bookings for us. The ones we chose (EtnaPeople - I'm going to write them a separate review) actually picked up from the hotel, which made life easy. There is a hotel shuttle service to Taomina, but be aware that it books up fast and that you need to book yourself on the shuttle back as well to ensure space. On a couple of occasions we ended up having to use the service bus instead. It runs hourly, so it's not a great problem. Just don't panic coming back - there are no signs at the bus stop you get off at in Taomina saying you need to wait in the same place, but the bus will reappear just where you got off.
The pool is lovely but not heated, so if you are going out of high season be prepared for cool water.
Castelmola itself has a lot of character and, perched where it is, you can look into the mountains to the north, down to Taomina and south to Etna. Although it does get plenty of tourists, it is nowhere near as busy as Taomina and there are plenty of outdoor places to relax with a coffee or a wine. If your legs are up to it, make the climb to the top of the ruined castle, from which there are stunning views.
Would we go back? A definite "yes".
The staff was so very helpful - before and during our stay. They were very hard working too. The hotel is quaint and comfortable and our rooms had absolutely stunning views of Mount Etna! I would highly recommend this hotel!
