This is a fun, old school motor lodge, the kind of place that was the standard roadside place to stay in mid-century America. You drive right up to your room, and the manager gives you a real key, not a card, to open the door.
Does it have all the bells and whistles that a generic, boring… Days Inn have? Of course not, but it’s got SO much more character and charm!
My wife and I stayed here on our way up to southern Oregon, and greatly enjoyed it. There is an old bar right next door, the Klondike Klub, which has been there forever, and it is filled with very welcoming regulars.
The room was comfortable, clean, cute and cozy. The manager was very helpful and friendly. We’re glad we stayed here, and will do so for sure next time we find ourselves in the Lake Shasta area.
Get what you pay for. The room is good and bed is comfy. But the bathroom has thick mold smell.
fair
The room itself was clean, but it was apparent that the bathroom floor had not even been swept, ket alone mopped. Some trash and a large tienail clipping, along with other general dirt, was in obvious places on the floor.
Chemult is a small town relatively close to Crater Lake. The property was clean and the room was spacious and had both a fridge and a microwave. The room had a balcony overlooking a highway. Coffee was offered for a period in the morning, but breakfast was on our own. It is located on US 97, which is a major truck route from Canada, so trucks went by frequently throughout the night, which were easily heard in the room. Dining in the town was very limited.
Would not recommend at any price. Not our style of lodging.
I love the history of this place. It’s quaint and very basic. Others have mentioned they had a hard time sleeping because of road noise. That was not my experience at all. I slept great both nights I was there. My husband and I stayed there because we were visiting Crater Lake. I can’t emphasize enough that this is a very basic, no nonsense place. I felt safe and secure in my room and in the area. It was nice to step out of our room onto the balcony that goes all the way around the building. A good place to chill and read. The porch is a common area, so if there is someone in the room next to you , you will meet them on the porch.
We ate at at Jen’s Coffee across the street. Great hearty breakfast, huge portions and nice, friendly owners. Plenty of donuts available too for a quick cup and donut to go.
My only real complaint was that our room, the Rose Room had a jacuzzi style tub and the jets didn’t work. The manager said it needed to be serviced. I specifically picked this room because of the tub/jacuzzi and was disappointed that it didn’t work. In spite of that it’s a huge tub and very comfortable to have a bath in.
While we were there it appeared that upgrades were being made to the building and some of the issues that others reported appeared to have been resolved.
Basic coffee available in the lobby starting at 6am. It’s a 35 or 40 minute drive to Crater Lake from Chemult.
The only thing this property has going for it is that it’s close to Crater Lake! It’s a historic former boarding house that has seen better days. Its right next to a busy highway so it’s noisy. Check in was quick, bed was fine, but the only blankets were non-washable decorative covers over just a sheet. The bathroom sink /counter had been updated and a linoleum floor installed . The bedroom wood floor may have been pro but it really creaked walking on it. The room had a working TV with Satellite channels, a working refrigerator and a small microwave. The building was in the process of being painted, so all exterior benches were covered with scraping/sanding dust, as well as the balcony outside our upper level rooms. We walked across the highway to a pretty good restaurant for dinner, and stopped on our way back to the hotel at a little market that seemed to have everything for ice cream. We would have loved to sit outside and enjoy it but for the condition of all the outside benches. We didn’t use the air conditioner that was directly above the bed or the small wall heater that next to the other side of the bed. There was a lighted ceiling fan mid-room with pull cords for light or fan that had a wall switch near the door to the room.
l
For the price, it felt like it could have been better. Maybe the location of this property being conveniently close to Crater Lake dictates the price. That said, the exterior looked rather unappealing and even a little unsafe. Still, once we got to our room, it turned out to be comfortable and cozy overall.
Quaint rooms. Friendly staff. All you need!
The Dawson is an older property that is fairly well maintained. The bed was comfortable, the room clean. Chemult was close to our destination, Crater Lake. The locals told us the place was haunted, but we didn't see any spirits!
Room had a weird smell. Furnishings were very outdated and not in a charming way. Bathroom had weird deep blue tub.
Very basic and run down motel. was clean enough. Was ok for me, but too run down for some people. some road noise, depending on your room.
I stayed at the Dawson about 15 years ago and loved this charming old guest house.
This time, I found mold in the shower and mold on the floor near the shower, flimsy towel bar with paint cracking and falling out of the wall.
Not even one hook to hang anything.
Looks like it's being painted mint green... Not the color you would expect to find on a western Lodge.
Update the place it’s old and dirty!!
The room was very basic. Not a lot of room. Linen and towels were clean, but the room itself needed a good cleaning and some TLC. The room we had was next to the road and there cars and trucks that went by all night.
Nothing but noisy. Tractor-trailer trucks rumbling by your window, literally 10-15 ft. away All night. You will not sleep. You'll still be 50 minutes to Crater Lake. Wait until you can get a cabin at Crater Lake instead.
It was OK, but the room was small, and being right on the highway, it was noisy.
We had a good time. The room was accommodating and clean. It was a bit difficult to keep the curtain closed that led out to the back of the property
