A Bawa masterpiece, made unforgettable by its people
I spent three nights at Heritance Kandalama as a solo traveler, and it was a truly special stay. The hotel itself is everything I had hoped for as a Geoffrey Bawa admirer — a building that doesn't impose on the landscape but quietly belongs to it. The way nature flows into and around the architecture is genuinely moving, and the property feels alive with birds, light, and the changing colors of the rock and reservoir throughout the day.
But what truly elevated this stay was the people. Every single staff member I encountered was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. I would especially like to thank a few who went above and beyond:
Sachini and Maduwanthi at the restaurant — you remembered my room number from the very first meal and always greeted me with such warmth. As a solo diner, you made me feel completely at home at every meal.
Warsha at reception — your kindness, patience, and willingness to help with anything made every interaction a pleasure. Thank you for taking such wonderful care of me throughout my stay.
Avishka, the resident naturalist — the hotel tour and birdwatching session you led were highlights of my entire trip. Your knowledge and passion brought the property to life in a way I never could have experienced on my own. To future guests: please do join one of the naturalist tours, you won't regret it.
Nawaratha and Jayasinghe in housekeeping — you didn't just clean my room, you transformed it each day into a space that felt even more peaceful and welcoming to return to. The small, thoughtful touches truly mattered.
Thank you all for a wonderful stay. I would love to come back.
Location was great and secluded. The view from the room was good and monkeys on the balcony were a bonus. Dinner and breakfast were OK.
This was the most expensive hotel we booked for the entire trip to Sri Lanka and by far the most disappointing. The hotel's interior decor is outdated and is need of a refurbishment. The room we were given (which was supposed to be on a higher-level floor but was on the second lowest floor) was badly outdated. The bed was the most uncomfortable that I slept on in Sri Lanka with a bulge in the middle of the mattress that sloped to either side. The air conditioner was at least 20 years old and did not stop cooling despite setting the temperature to 26 degrees. The whole experience left a lot to be desired, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. We had far better experiences at the Kandy Mist by Cinnamon in Kandy and The Marino Beach Hotel in Colombo which cost a fraction of the Heritance Kandalama.
My wife was most upset over the welcome we received. She was suffering with a severe asthma attack and could not stop coughing and was offered a hot tea or coffee which she accepted. Thinking this was a part of the welcome package and desperate for a coffee I then asked for a coffee which staff agreed to at the time but did not provide despite a couple of enquiries. I was happy to pay for this if someone could have advised what the issue was, but staff chose to ignore my enquiries.
Overall, a bad experience.
Great and unforgettable confusion with nature. It is worth a whole day to walk around. The boat safari is interesting. Breakfast and dinner are good.
It would be better if the boat safari could be broader. Long for more experience in nature. Maybe a film about the hotel should be made, and provide guests with gifts to remember it.
素晴らしいロケーション、自然、親切なスタッフ
部屋とレストラン以外は空調がないので暑がりにはツラい(自然を生かした設計だから致し方ないけれど)
Dinner was served very slowly at Cave dinner
Too many guests in the restaurant

In a beautiful setting with excellent service
The rooms, the architecture by Geoffrey Bawa. The view of the Sigiriya from the rooms.
Some staff were focused only on foreigners. There was one waiter at the Kanchana restaurant, only taking care of the foreigners. Racism in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankans! We were paying the same price as the foreigners but he didn’t even give me a glass of water when I requested.
