You are basically in the middle of the jungle, which is a pro and a con
Well, where to start… the rooms are small, humid and you can hear everything from all sides. There are no showers, no separate bathrooms (it’s included in the bedroom) and also they are very inflexible. Late checkout is not possible, staff is quite unmotivated and everything is completely overpriced. I live in one of the most expensive cities on this planet, but I was not used to paying these kinds of prices. Value for money was really bad unfortunately… the hotel is also not the newest anymore and I think a lot of people have come to realise this, that’s why at least half of the hotel was empty during my stay.
We stayed at Azulik this February in a Sea Villa, and the experience was truly mixed.
It’s unique and artistic — it feels like stepping into a sculptural treehouse sanctuary. Our Sea Villa itself was beautiful, with a gorgeous tiled outdoor tub, swing and incredible aesthetic details. It’s a visually striking property.
Melanie, our concierge, was friendly, responsive, and very helpful throughout our stay.
However there were several disappointments. While the basics in the room appeared cleaned, there were noticeable gobs of hair around the bed and bathtub, which detracted from what should have felt like a luxury stay. The sea and sky villas are built very close together, offering no privacy, you can see and hear everything- something to be aware of if you’re expecting a secluded atmosphere.
The beach area is small and located next to a public access point, which was busy during our visit. It felt crowded, and there were not enough lounge chairs to accommodate the number of guests. On every occasion when we spent time at the beach, we received no service or greeting. When we requested towels, we were told they were out and never received any. The beach area was not cleaned at the end of each day, so in the mornings the seating areas were scattered with dishes, glassware and food scraps.
The overall vibe during our stay felt more like a spring break or Burning Man–style retreat than a tranquil luxury escape. Also, the water in the shower, sink, and outdoor tub was brine, which may align with their eco-concept but was unexpected.
It’s beautiful & unique, but the service consistency, cleanliness & beach experience did not align with the price point.
This is a beautiful resort with a thoughtful design. There are so many positives that out weighed the few negatives. The check in was quick and easy. They do not ask for a credit card to hold cause everything is pay as you go. You can’t charge food or drinks to the room. The concierge Stacy led us on a tour which included a spiritual cleansing ceremony and then a short tour of the grounds. When we arrived at our room we were amazed at the beauty and uniqueness of the room. We booked a sky view villa which faces the ocean and our room was a top floor room. There are a few stairs to climb and the path from the resort entrance to the room is tricky with the unusual round wood logs used for the path. We got used to it.
This room does have air conditioning, a shower and two electric light switches. The rest of the lighting at night is candlelight which you must light unless you ask the concierge to have that done for you. We loved the unusual stone tub and rainfall shower that uses natural cenote water. There isn’t a dedicated space to have your suitcase and the place for hanging clothes had 2 hangers and maybe would hold 5-7 garmets anyway. The view was amazing and the sunrise is beautiful. The small toilet area is in the room in a large wooden enclosure. There’s not much privacy. The rooms around you can
very easily see into part of each others rooms but the bed area is not seen. We did have a broken board on the deck and the guys fixed it immediately. There isn’t a front desk to call if you have a problem, you have to message your concierge.
The complimentary breakfast is very limited! They do have an amazing menu if you wanted to pay . The beach area is small and the covered beds fill quickly as they also allow outside guests in with day passes. The food and drinks at the beach are good. Again I don’t like having to pay each and every time I get something to eat or drink at a resort.
My wife visited the spa and loved the Azulik signature treatment. Had to pay for that right then too. The nightly party on tue rooftop is a fun experience the first time and afterwards it got old with so many outside people coming in and the loud music and multiple blowing of the conch shell was tiresome.I understand this is likely a money maker and draws people to their resort. Overall this is a great experience and you have to know the openness of the rooms and the little amenities that they don’t have of your used to a modern resort. We really loved it and would come back.
Azulik was amazing experience from the time we checked until the moment we left. The staff was who was excellent and our room was incredible. We stayed in the sea dweller suite and the upgrade was totally worth it. The views from the balcony and the private pool were bucket list worthy. We tried three restaurants on site and all were excellent and some of the best food we ate in Tulum. The rooms were fully air-conditioned and seemed to be carved out of the jungle canopy. It was truly a unique and wonderful experience. Highly recommended! Just book it and get the best room you can. We will be back soon.
The experience is really mixed and things are either good or bad, there is no in between.
We stayed for 3 nights and arrived by car. You have valet service but the person at the entrance was rude until we told him we had a reservation.
After checkin we were brought to a cleansing ritual, without explanation or anything.
The walk through the place the first time is magical but the novelty wears of and walking over the round planks every time just becomes annoying.
We had a room without light, that required an upgrade. Thankfully my partner had a lighter for the candles as the matches didn't work.
It was cold during our stay and nobody cared. We had to ask for extra blankets and had a small thin one delivered. It was 12 degrees at night.
The staff was careless. More concerned with themselves than people. The exception was one of the receptionists who was friendly. But most staff felt superficial and didn't care much really.
Prices are high for rooms and food and while the views are great, the price isnt worth it.
Conch horn sounding until 11 at night and music too as if you had a speaker in the room. And by latent 8 incense would be bunt throughout the day. You smell a burning scent until night.
No shower. A bathtub not deep enough for the water to cover your body, and Windows everywhere for everybody to see everything. Just simple curtains would do a lot.
Overall the stay was disappointing. Architecture is beautiful but that isnt enough for a high price hotel. Ecofriendly doesn't have to mean no comfort and it was just a lot of that.
We left looking forward to our next hotel with a warm bed and a hot shower...
I have never left a review in my life even when I have had a bad experience but I really don’t want anyone’s stay in Tulum to be ruined because they choose to stay at Azulik hotel. It’s so uncomfortable it’s incomprehensible , there is no service, any requests are met with a no, even if you want to upgrade your room because it’s so dark during the day and the night that you can’t find your medication, your clothes, forget trying to do your make up or getting dressed, there are no comforts in the room, no ammenities at all. A bed, a bath tub , no hot water in the basin. Either
We had a mid of the range room. Didn’t sleep in 4 night because we heard everything that happened in the room above us, water trickled from their bath into our room, and every time they walked we heard it. I could not even get a glass to pour a drink. The bracelets they give you to recognise you as a guest are reused, it’s gross
The keys are re used and dirty
If you lost that bracelet the dirty re used one you had to pay 20 US dollars
If you need a towel to go on a tour it’s a problem, you have to go to the beach club to get one,
You can’t get any help from anyone except a host, who has clearly no training and doesn’t advice you how long you can have a table for at a restaurant , and will organise a car for you to get somewhere but when you ask how much it’s she tells you to ask the driver, and leaves you on read and if she doesn’t want to continue a conversation
Your concierge is the only way to get or organise things there is no front desk.
And they are really of no help
Young people out of their depth and felt like they were working on commission
I recommend going there to look at the architecture and the sunset bar I also recommend the beach club , the art gallery is also fabulous , the architecture of the hotel is a mastery and worth going to
I give this hotel a 1 at most in terms of service and comfort and a 10 to spend 3 hours going to the art gallery the beach club and watching the sunset
Couldn’t get out of there fast enough , so happy to have left.
Azulik is visually stunning. The property is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced and photos truly do not do it justice. From the architecture to the setting, it feels otherworldly and special. If you’re looking for a quiet, serene stay, this place delivers.
The indoor and outdoor tubs were a standout. They were beautiful, thoughtfully designed, and genuinely added to the sense of relaxation. Using them felt like part of the experience, not an afterthought.
That said, there are some real gaps between the vision and the execution.
Azulik promotes a digital detox, but the restaurants rely entirely on QR code menus. You’re required to bring your phone, which pulls you right out of the experience. I asked for a printed menu and was told none were available. That felt misaligned with the brand.
Navigation around the property could be much better. The grounds are expansive and beautiful, but there are very few directional signs. We often found ourselves wandering or second guessing where things were.
The beach setup was another surprise. There were no umbrellas, which makes it tough if you’re trying to avoid direct sun. The cabanas were not always available, and even when you did get one, sunlight still came through the roof. For anyone sun-sensitive, that’s something to consider.
Our room had a serious safety concern. The door lock for room 10 requires a key to lock the door or even keep it closed, even from the inside. I had to lock my wife in when I stepped out briefly while she napped. If she needed to leave the room, she wouldn’t have been able to. That should be addressed immediately, just do what you did with the handle for room 12.
The rooftop bar didn’t have enough tables or seating, especially during peak times.
Service was inconsistent. On a few occasions, staff told us tipping could not be added to a credit card, which simply isn’t true. Another time, we were seated for drinks and hookah, waited over 15 minutes with no one checking on us, and eventually left without a single acknowledgment.
On the positive side, Stacy, our concierge, was outstanding. She was responsive, thoughtful, and proactive with recommendations and reservations. She genuinely elevated our stay and was one of the highlights of the experience.
The spa was excellent. The massage experience from start to finish was relaxing and well done.
The hotel and restaurants felt quite empty during our stay. We personally enjoyed the calm, but if you’re looking for a lively, social atmosphere, this is not that kind of resort.
Food and drinks on property are expensive, more than you might expect, but the quality is strong and felt worth it to us. There are also several great, more affordable local spots within walking distance.
Highly recommend going across the street to La Milpa. Fantastic outdoor bar, large menu, great energy. Honestly, it’s the kind of place that would be amazing to have on the property. Try the grasshoppers, they’re delicious.
One last note: the conch shell gets blown a lot. Some people may love it, others may find it disruptive. It depends on your tolerance for ambient noise.
Overall, Azulik is a breathtaking and memorable place with incredible potential. With better attention to guest flow, safety, and service consistency, it could truly match the magic of its setting.
One very specific call out is that the hotel is not recommend for anyone with any type of mobility issues. There are no elevators, the walkways are very uneven and there are a lot of stairs.
Lunch for 2 was $160+ US dollars. We did not have any alcohol. The shrimp Agua Chili was bad and we got super sick. We didn’t even eat most of our food and they didn’t ask if it was ok or check in. It feels like no one cared if we liked the food or not. Our server was nice but seemed dead inside. This place feels like it’s for influencers and the staff hates it.
There’s a really beautiful location off the beach, Azulik Uh May. Go there in stead. It’s a better museum experience and the food was incredible and the service was spectacular!!! It was pricey but so so special and worth it. This lunch almost ruined that experience.
This is a skip but don’t pass on Azulik Uh May. It’s a bit of a drive but totally worth it!
We were so nervous after reading the reviews on Booking.com, but it was a huge positive surprise. Staff went above and beyond. Our villa was ultra comfortable and close to the beach. Food is good but kind of overpriced.
Restaurant staff does not speak English well.
Very nice location, nice beach, friendly people
Overpriced for amount of amenities and room, seems a little overhyped
