A historic Grade II listed hotel in the heart of Penrith, where old world charm — wood panelling, old oak beams, antique furniture — is complemented by exceptional accommodation and conference facilities. A convenient base for exploring Penrith, Cumbria and the Lake District.

To enter car park please approach the barrier, which is automatic when entering. Please note that when you wish to leave the car park you will need to obtain a code from reception to get out. Please inform of your expected arrival time in advance. You can use the Special Requests box when booking, or contact the property directly using the contact details in your confirmation.

Was ok for one night, but wouldn’t go back.
Pros:

Location & history of the property.

Cons:

Bit shabby and extremely noisy during the night; pipes banging, floors creaking etc

Friendly staff, good breakfast and comfortable rooms in the heart of Penrith.
Pros:

Due to dates mix-up, was unable to stay the previous night. Room was pre-paid for that night but credited against my re-booking direct with The George - very much appreciated! Room on 1st floor, quiet. Comfortable bed. Reasonable shower. Good breakfast (as always) cooked to order. Staff have been there a long time and recognised us - always a good sign.

Cons:

The parking charge for the hotel car park has been increased from £3 to £6.50 / night! Whilst not a lot of money in itself, this is over a 100% increase in charge for no additional benefit to the hotel guest(s)! Apparently, this is a policy decision at the Head Office of Everbright Hotels - the owners of The George and is causing a lot of complaints to the reception staff.

Great for a stop off on the way to Scotland
Pros:

Great for a one night stop on the way up to Scotland - really large room so great for us and the dog. Good breakfast in the morning.

Cons:

Little bit dated but in a nice way!

Lovely stop over en route to Scotland.
Pros:

Room on the third floor was large enough for a very comfortable bed although the desk with the refreshment facilities was quite tight between the window and the end of the bed. This made it a bit difficult for the person sleeping on the wall side of the bed to get past the end of the bed. The en-suite looked to have been recently renovated and was very nice.
The hotel had a nice vibe about it with plenty of people meeting up with friends for tea / coffee.
Dinner and breakfast were good with lovely staff.

Cons:

The only negative comment I would make is that our room was on the third floor and obviously with a building of this age there was no lift. We were offered help with our luggage when we arrived (although my husband annoyingly refused), but it was a climb for a couple in their late 70’s up and down for meals etc. On a next visit we will request a room on a lower floor if possible.

Our Honeymoon Stay
Pros:

It is our third stay at the Fab GEORGE. This occasion we returned & a 2 night stay - booked as part of my wife & I celebrating our honeymoon!
We adore the venue .
The staff were all really charming & welcoming + the bottle of Prosecco in out suite on arrival was a lovely touch 😀!
We dined in the restaurant on our 2nd evening & we shared the "three small plates" & house wine 🍷.
Delicious .
Our suite was impeccable, clean & everything in top condition.
Our "George Breakfast" is always a delight of a morning.
I had the veggie breakfast my wife had eggs & spinach in Hollandaise sauce served on muffins .
Special mention to young Ben who is always a delight & ... a character (in the nicest way!)
& of course always to JOHN who always makes us welcome & ensures everything runs seamlessly & is seemingly always there !

We shall return in the spring of 2027 & the George is kne of our most beloved places .

Cons:

The noise in my room coming from an adjacent bar though staff dealt with it quickly and efficiently for which I was most grateful. My starter on set menu in hotel restaurant consisted of 3 tiny prawns in an indifferent- and frankly horrible - sauce when it said garlic chilli prawns on menu. Main course was great. Starter very mean and disappointing- especially given my partners starter of steak bites were the opposite! I was too English to complain as staff were lovely
