Staff were very helpful in parking our car and showing us to our room. But the room was dark, the bed was the hardest I’ve ever slept on, and the wifi was connected but exceptionally weak. And road noise on first floor was significant.
Wonderful hotel that hails back to the golden age of travel. This family run hotel has impeccable staff who provide a marvellous experience in this unique historical area.
Next door is an upmarket restaurant oozing in style and 10 metres away is a perfect little bistro with a fantastic selection of wines and a few snacks.
Excellent hotel the rooms and facilities are extraordinary beautiful, you feel steeped in history. The host is very very friendly and welcoming. Although there is a school next door we were not disturbed by noise at all. It’s about a 20 minute walk to down town which is challenging on the way back as it is up hill. We loved it ..
We nice place to stay in Modica. Very friendly and helpful staff.
From the moment of our arrival, the staff were incredibly friendly and could not do enough to help. We were offered a coffee while we checked in. The secure car park, just a minute down the road, was excellent and definitely worth the small extra cost.
The room was extremely comfortable, clean and had lots of character. The air conditioning was effective, and while the bathroom felt a little dated, it was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed.
Breakfast in the café which forms part of the hotel was incredibly relaxed, and could be taken inside or outside. There was a great variety of pastries and cake, as well as fruit and yogurt. Something we loved about breakfast was that the locals were dropping in for their coffee etc at the same time, so we felt part of the town.
This is not the usual anonymous hotel but one where you almost feel as though you are guests in someone's (very fancy!) home, with complete privacy. This was enhanced by the owners being foremost in the staff who care for the guests.
Most of the restaurants in Modica may be down the hill, but we found three places to eat within ten minutes walk so this was perfect.
We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thank you!
Great stay at a real palace: nice room, good set of amenities, super-friendly staff, amazingly tasty breakfast. Feels like you are visiting a rekatives in Italy - that much care you get from the family that keeps the place. Definitely recomnend.
I can warmly recommend Hotel Palazzo Failla in Modica Alta. Ideally located to explore the narrow streets and stairs of Modica Alta on foot. The family-owned hotel is the right place for guests who like a place with charme / to stay in the historic centre.
The staff and the couple who owns the place is professional and friendly. The restaurant (the son of the owners) LOCANDA DEL COLONNELLO is next door.
There's also a small supermarket right behind the hotel with fresh fruits etc and an enoteca right across the street.
It is a historic house so don't expect wheelchair accessibility, there are stairs...
You will certainly enjoy your stay...
Amazing place, super helpful hosts.
From the moment we arrived, the staff could not do enough for us: they parked our car (the car park is an absolute boon, since Modica is a city of steps, steps and more steps; you'll have a job finding a parking place anywhere near where you're staying - and hire a small car: the streets are very, very narrow, and the citizens drive very, very fast!!), they helped us up to our room with our bags and they advised us on what to see and where to go. The service was smiling and friendly and prompt, the room was large and comfortable (we chose to pay more for a large double) - the ceiling height had to be 20 ft or more and was beautifully frescoed: I lay in bed in the mornings just looking at it - and the shower in the bathroom was excellent. Despite looking onto the street, our room was very quiet at night, too. You do get the odd Vespa zooming by like a large hornet, but not often (this was March, though; not July), and it didn't prevent sleep in any way. The hotel is perfectly positioned for easy access to the great churches of Modica, too, though you've quite a descent to the main shopping street, so beware of that if you are in any way challenged in your legs. The breakfast was sumptuous! The best coffee in the world, and delicious filled croissants. They even made us a sort of croque monsieur every day. Opposite the hotel, there is an excellent wine bar/wine shop for those interested, and they serve cocktails, too. All in all, I couldn't praise the Hotel Failla enough, and we can't wait to go again - possibly later in the year: we are already looking at flights.
Beautiful hotel. Very good service.
Very nice rooms, very friendly personnel! Loved every minute of our stay
Historic palazzo, frendly, personal and warm welcome, very attentive hosts. Highly recommended.
We had a room in the annex which was 30 second walk from the main hotel building but was very peaceful and a lovely room. Hotel staff were fabulous and extremely helpful. The breakfast was very relaxed and takes place in / outside the in-house cafe.
Hotel offered reasonably priced valet parking which given the tight roads, tricky parking situation and confusing one way systems I would recommend!
The hotel was a step back in time. There is nothing modern about the place, yet it's charming. The staff, cleanliness and value made this a great half way stop to Agrigento. We ate breakfast in the court yard at the front of the hotel. The inclusive breakfast was pasteries, yogart and coffee. I heard the rooms at the front of the building were noisy because of the cars foeing by.
A real family business where all welcomed us with charm and friendliness. Wonderfully equipped with lovely furniture and rugs - a place with history you feel that you can share and enjoy. For us it was enjoyable and very relaxing to spend a night here
Worst experience of our trip
They tried to place us in an awful annex away from the nice hotel
We were going to leave and finally they gave us a room
Breakfast area very grim
Breakfast stale rolls and we had to beg for everything throughout our stay
Breakfast only four kinds of stale rolls no meats cheeses fruit
Charged extra for a room in the hotel when we refused annex
Awful awful place
In the middle of nowhere so had to go great distance for dinner
Hotel restaurant closed
A 4 star hotel in an old palace at the top of old town Modica. We stayed for one night in mid September during our visit to Sicily.
Our room, 103, was up on the 1st floor, 2nd in US parlance, in the corner with a painted, very high (20 ft?) ceiling and antique furniture and furnishings. While the room was very large, the bathroom was small with a tiny shower. The building itself, a former palace had beautiful woodwork and was quite beautiful. The helpful staff stashed our car in their private garage (12€) or the valet/bellman would have found a free spot on the narrow streets. In fact one of the highlights was the warm welcome from the staff. In fact that's one of the hallmarks of this small boutique hotel the extra effort extended by each and every member of the staff-absolutely 5 star service.
With that said, there a some things for me that cause me to reluctantly rate them below 4 stars. First and most important, sleep quality. While I prefer firm beds in general the beds here are more like sleeping on a sheet of plywood-there is absolutely no padding at all on the mattresses. Coupled with the extremely firm pillows, it simply was impossible to get in a comfortable sleeping spot for long so consequently I slept quite poorly.
The small AC unit in our room struggled to cool the lofty space moving from 26 (79 F) to 24 (75 F) in 6 hours, and never getting lower than 23 even after running all night long. Also, given the structure it wasn't the quietest room for a light sleeper like me with a fair amount of street noise well into the evening and beginning early morning especially from loud dirt bike style motorcycles.
I believe this property caters mostly to Italians and the included breakfast was the traditional Italian one; a pastry, a coffee and some fruit so don’t be expecting a lavish buffet.
Also be aware that the hotel sits adjacent to an elementary school so there's a lot of traffic noise and activity on school mornings as parents drop off the kids.
Bottom line, for the price which was VERY reasonable, the warm staff will do everything in their power to enhance your stay but for me, not the most restful.
