The rooms at the hotel were fantastic. We stayed in an individual bungalow with an outside dining area which due to rain we were unfortunately unable to enjoy for eating, however we could still sit as it was covered. The restaurants were very good with either formal dining, or less formal in the bar although a limited menu. The buffet breakfast was however excellent. There were golf buggys which could be easily called for transport to the main hotel if you were a little further away from the main building. Superb staff!!
Our 5-night stay was a wonderful experience. The reception staff made an excellent first impression on our first day in Costa Rica, and remained warm, welcoming, and so helpful with any of our needs throughout our stay. The resort’s location is ideal for access to La Fortuna, and just minutes to all the activities offered around Arenal.
We loved our private bungalow (510). A bit of a climb to get there (which did us good), and the views of the jungle and Arenal were spectacular. The room was spotless and comfortable. This is a bird paradise! We spent many hours on our balcony with our Merlin bird app (highly recommend!) listening to and spotting the dozens of varieties that flitted about the grounds. A true highlight for us.
Breakfast was always fabulous. Every possible breakfast item was available in the sumptuous buffet. We appreciated that they had a “To Go” counter with coffee and fruit for the days when we had an early activity. Our one pizza lunch was enjoyable, and dinners were varied and nicely presented.
The resort has a little jungle hike that we did twice. It’s a moderate climb to the actual trail, and then you are literally in the wild. Lots of things to spot, if you’re quiet and observant. Highlights were a group of coatis, and a noisy flock of aracaris. And, as always, those leaf cutter ants on their busy trails.
The pool area is beautiful and relaxing. The trees behind also provided some fun bird spotting; scarlet macaws, parrots, and toucans.
All in all, a most excellent choice for accommodations in the La Fortuna area.
We had excellent service from every member of staff. Those at reception were especially helpful and friendly. Top class all round.
Accommodation:
We had a standard double bungalow which was well fitted and included plenty of storage, a large bathroom and the benefit of two balconies with, in our case, one looking out towards the volcano. Our only minor criticism is that the room safe was placed so high, we had to stand on the chair to see into it!
Restaurant/Food:
The buffet breakfast was extensive and there was a made to order 'bar' for freshly cooked choices and also a waffle maker where one could make one's own waffles - a nice touch. There was a choice of the restaurant for dinner or the bar for snacks. In both cases the food was tasty and we ate in both during our stay.
Location:
Whilst the hotel is close to La Fortuna and the many local attractions, the long driveway into the hotel from the main road requires any journey out of the hotel to be by car or taxi. The hotel runs a taxi to La Fortuna ($6 each way when we were there) and if you call of WhatsApp them from La Fortuna, they wills end the hotel taxi to collect you. We did just that and it worked really well. If like us you don't have roaming on your phone nor an e-sim, Clara offer a 15minute free connection from the corner of the square furthest from the church. The grounds of the hotel are impressive and you can see birds and monkeys and other wildlife with our going any further!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, which included an excellent massage, and would be very happy to return.
Hotel Lomas is a really nice hotel organized as bungalows. The bungalows are right in the rainforest facing the Arenal volcano. The view is quite spectacular. The bungalows are a bit tight for four people but very clean and we enjoyed the experience of a hotel in the rainforest. The only issue is we had ants entering the room, but you have to expect that when the hotel is in the rainforest. The service was exceptional. The staff is super friendly. They are very accommodating and made the experience so much better. This is the main reason I would recommend this hotel. We saw monkeys outside our bungalow high up in the trees, which was really cool. We did notice that the hotel was more for retirees as the clientele was mostly older generation. There were a few families there of course. The heated pool was really nice. The Jacuzzi was warm and not very hot compared to the heated pool. My kids loved the infinity pool. I would go back there if I visit La Fortuna again.
This had a wonderful view from the base of the volcano!
The staff went above and beyond to reserve activities for us
They worked with us on a late checkout since we were were returning from activities
The grounds were so beautiful and had a private walking path
We loved our room and had a private patio.
The plants were beautiful
Great location, lovely facility, very good restaurant and bar, nice pool.
We arrived at Hotel Lomas to find a dirty, hot, small and incredibly underwhelming room. While they are standalone 'bungalows' the rooms are outdated, stained and dirty. This is on the level of a cheap motel, not what it promises to be.
The hotel was so dirty and gross we immediately left and found a different hotel. For obvious reasons, we asked for a refund for the additional days we had booked, but rather than understanding, they pretended to be ignorant and denied the ability to speak to a manager.
This hotel feels like it preys on unsuspecting tourists and provides the absolute minimum in service and rooms at every step.
Hotel Lomas is a wonderful resort near a volcano with a short ride to La Fortuna. Since the weather was exceptionally rainy and cool, the heated pool was just what we needed. Both, the restaurant and cafe offered a broad variety of dishes that were of high quality. Service at the restaurant, front desk and bell stand was superb: Josebeth, Byron and Alejandro deserve special recognition for their efficient, convivial and professional service. If you have a chance, join the yoga sessions, offered Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The instructors are very good and the location is exquisite; an open air structure surrounded by rain forest.
We were in 504. The room is big enough, and nicely appointed. There is a large bathroom, with large sink, commode, bidet, and shower. Plenty of water pressure and hot water. Room was clean and nice both nights we were there. Comfortable bed. Lovely porch out front and out back. Generally quiet area. Went to the casual restaurant for lunch, and the regular restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Both were excellent in food and service. There is a walking/hiking path, but it was too muddy and a bit too hilly for us.
Fantastic hotel with beautiful gardens, in a great location. Great view of the volcano. Plenty of wildlife in the gardens and surrounding area. Friendly, helpful staff as well. Would highly recommend.
The hotel is fairly centrally located in the Arenal region, and it made it easy to get anywhere we wanted to go. The hotel was made up of small cottages surrounded by vegetation, so you felt part of the rainforest which made it extra special.
We had a cottage with an outdoor jacuzzi on the back of the cottage. As the cottage backed up to the jungle it allowed for the use of the jacuzzi looking out over the jungle (the extra cost is well worth it!).
The cottages are large and perfectly kept, very roomy and comfortable.
The whole facility was immaculately kept.
The bar was very good, and the bartenders would make drinks that I could show them the recipe (up for the challenge) and they did a great job.
Food is excellent as well.
It is one of the best values in the area.
Perfect location. Stunning grounds, bungalows all very well situated so not overlooked. Good facilities in the room although I would have liked milk for the coffee machine. Spotlessly clean. Great porch and patio outside. Breakfast amazing, so much choice including made to order omelettes cereals fruit bread cold buffet and pastries. Good menu for eating in. Nice bar and pool bar. Lots of seating areas including a few cabanas which were great when it rained. Plenty of clean towels. Warm pool and jacuzzi. Got an Uber into La Fortuna $4. ALL the staff without exception were brilliant. Couldn’t fault it.
The location is incredible! It backs right to Arenal volcano, and there’s a trail accessible to the hotel.
Wonderful stay in a cozy, well-appointed, private bungalow. The grounds are gorgeous and lush. The staff are very friendly and professional.
My wife Fiona and I stayed here for 4 nights as the 2nd part of our 14 day holiday in Costa Rica and wow what a beautiful place. We didn't know what to expect and were bowled over by the warm welcome and beautiful setting. Our room was very comfortable, the bed was enormous and the bathroom huge. We had a place to sit outside both front and back. The rains hadn't stopped when we arrived but it was so warm that in our free time we'd sit outside enjoying a drink and watching the rain. Whilst there we did the resort hill walk in rain that quickly became Biblical which was a little scarey. We had an excellent massage at the relaxation centre by 2 excellent masseuse. We visited the Waterfall and a local hot spring. The food in the restaurants was superb and I had the best steak I've had in ages. The staff were friendly, good fun and very attentive. The breakfast was superb with lots of foods to choose from. Most mornings we got a seat by the window so we could watch the Humming birds going about their business and hear the Howler Monkeys. It was here we saw our first Coati's both solitary males but close enough to get a hood look. The pool looked fantastic but we didn't have a chance to use it due to the rain. On the last day the sun made an appearance the cloud lifted and we got a look at the Volcano. Beautiful.
Quality place.
Hotel grounds are magnificent. Cabanas are very nice. Location to so many activities and La Fortuna great. Very good staff. Wonderful breakfast.
There are many positive aspects to this lodging which I will share first.
Positives:
Great location in La Fortuna, just a short drive from numerous restaurants and activities.
Nice breakfast and attractive onsite dining.
Very responsive staff.
Lovely well-kept grounds.
Reasonable price.
Nice shower with plenty of hot water.
And now the negatives:
The major issue for me was the overwhelming perfume smell in the room. It nearly knocked me out when I walked through the door. This may be part of the cleaning process to overcome some musty odor in the bathroom but after half an hour in the room I developed a terrible headache which did not go away. Management offered to move us to a different room the next morning but after checking it out, it also had the same strong smell. Our room was non- refundable but we found another lodging and moved anyway. That’s how bad it was. This may not bother everyone but better to be
forewarned in case it is a problem for you.
The room was also very dark and claustrophobic. I’ve been to Costa Rica several times and always enjoyed the connection to the outdoors which this room lacked. There was a porch on the back but the seating was in the form of very uncomfortable hard wooden dining chairs, not anything that you could sit in and relax or read for any length of time. The front porch had a small loveseat with a thin cushion, also not inviting.
There is a small amount of counter space in the bathroom. This is not a major problem but could be a negative for some people.
Bungalows are rather close together and did not offer the privacy and quiet atmosphere we expected. After reading reviews we thought that there would be major amounts of vegetation surrounding each room. There are lush beautiful plantings but not enough to give you that “in the rainforest” feeling that we’ve had at other Arenal locations (Nayara for one) which were booked up this trip. Once again, this may not bother everyone but for us it was less than perfect.
Hotel Lomas del Volcan could be perfect for someone on a strict budget who’s more interested in the outdoor activities that the Arenal area offers but for us, definitely not a good fit. I appreciate the management’s efforts to make it work but I prefer clean air to perfume.
Our cabin at the edge of the property was exceptional. Beautiful layout, spacious, with a wonderful terrace and jacuzzi. The entire property is beautiful, including the walk through their forest. Our breakfast was included and delicious. Check in and check out were quick and the attention of the staff unparalleled. We can highly recommend this hotel.
Hotel Lomas del Volcan was the perfect place to stay for our first visit to Costa Rica! The property is gorgeous, the individual cabins are private, clean, comfortable, and surrounded by lush greenery filled with birds and sometimes monkeys! It is quiet so you can hear the sounds of nature, and the Arenal volcano can be seen from everywhere. The lobby, bar and restaurants are aesthetically pleasing and very clean. The staff has been incredible: helpful, friendly, knowledgable - we booked many of our tours, like to the La Fortuna waterfall and a hike to Arenal, a night tour to see nocturnal frogs and snakes, and a tour of the Natura preserve, through Alejandro and Joseph at the front desk, and they are both very good at their jobs and have great recommendations. Every tour was great, the drivers all showed up on time, and when we needed to change any of our plans, they helped with every detail. I consider the Hotel Lomas del Volcan to be a great value, and recommend it to anyone planning a stay in La Fortuna! **My suggestion for the owners of this wonderful place: I think your employees deserve an “employee day,” perhaps during slow season, where they can experience the pools, the hot tub, maybe get massages (and then the masseurs can get massages!) because then they will know exactly what they’re offering, and it would be a nice gesture for them. You really want to keep this great staff!
Thank you to everyone at Hotel Lomas del Volcan - you helped make these last four days incredibly special!
Loved the location and the beauty of the grounds. There is a little trail to hike into for your own fun adventure right on the hotel grounds. The view of the volcano is amazing especially if you get a bungalow with the porch looking out towards it. We ate dinner out there one night with room service. In the mornings you can sit and watch all the colorful birds. Easy location into La Fortuna and pick up for other excursions. I booked my excursions through the hotel which was very convenient. The bungalows are super comfortable and very clean.
