Everything one needs is in walkable distance
Pros:

The simplicity of the hotel and the age of the building were very nice . There’s a little bit of history left there

The Sylvia is an old establishment, a little old fashioned, yet perfectly comfortable & welcoming like coming home.
Pros:

Location is perfect for my needs. It is walking distance from the beach, business I needed to conduct & local shops & activities. The restaurant & bar are excellent. I had one of the best meals (breakfast) I've had anywhere in a long while.

Cons:

It is a little scruffy, yet homey.

Wonderful stay
Pros:

We loved everything about the Sylvia hotel! The location, the charm, the amazing staff, the great restaurant. We were upgraded to an incredible corner room on the 5th floor, we were traveling with friends so the extra space was great for gathering.
We’d never stay any where else in Vancouver BC!

Pros:

Personal super amable.
Hotel situat a primera línia de platja, antic i amb molt de caràcter. Parking amb places grans.
Bany nou molt maco

Cons:

Wifi fluixet, llit petit (queen), esperàvem un llit més gran per la importància de l'hotel.
Mobles vells, escriptori amb furats de corcs !!
Finestres no insonoritzades, se sentia el xivarri dels bars a la nit

So glad we found the Sylvia Hotel
Pros:

A charming hotel in an unbeatable location on English Bay. Walkable to Stanley Park and the downtown waterfront. A good bike shop up the street to rent bikes to explore the beautiful city of Vancouver and its surrounding area. We ate in the hotel restaurant for a dinner and a breakfast...both good, but there are also great restaurant choices within a short walk. Very friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely go back if we travel to Vancouver again.

Best stay in Vancouver
Pros:

What a perfect location for a vacation. The hotel is ideally situated to give a visitor a taste of city life. You step out of one door of the hotel and walk down Denman and sample a wide array of food choices but was out another door and be at the foot of English Bay and disappear into Stanley Park. The hotel staff are welcoming; the rooms well appointed; and the restaurant much improved. This isn't a fancy place but it is ideal.

Great place but needs updating
Pros:

The staff are ALWAYS helpful, kind and welcoming. The location cannot be beat - right across the street from the beach, with access to great restaurants and the famed Stanley Park. The beds are comfortable. I hope the old musty carpeting is replaced by the time I return next summer

Great location
Pros:

Good stay at Sylvia Hotel. It is in an excellent location. It is not far from Stanley Park. English Bay is right across the street where you can swim, walk or ride bikes on the path along the water, or just relax and enjoy the day. Lots of places to get something to eat nearby. The only possible negatives are lack of AC and the breakfast (ordering and food delivery) was very slow.

July 2026
Pros:

I absolutely LOVE this quaint hotel & the staff are fantastic!!! I always try to stay here. I have never had a bad experience!!! My “Jakey” is getting used to the elevator too! (My old English mastiff doggie) the last time was July 26 a heat wave went threw BC and the no a/c was not great so we won’t stay there again when temperatures r above +30 or higher - unfortunately it was +42 at this particular time. Other than that we will be back in the spring fall or winter just not summer unless they can figure out a window a/c.
My favourite is prawn ceasar salad & the Korean chicken bites - room service!! I crave it when we go on holidays!!!

Great Location, Friendly Staff, Historic Charm
Pros:

An absolutely charming historic hotel perfectly located right near the beach, seawall/Stanley park, and restaurants. The staff were all very friendly - special shout out to Charmaine and Robert at the front desk and Christian at the restaurant who were so warm and welcoming from arrival to an early morning tea in the lobby. Enjoyed both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant which is a gem.

Pretty Bad!
Pros:

We don’t know what room other reviewers stayed in at the Sylvia, but it certainly wasn’t our room!!!! Awful!!!!! We had just gotten off our cruise ship and headed to this hotel early and were able to check in at that time as the room was available at 10:00 am. No wonder. We walked in, the windows were all opened and a huge whiff of musty smells hit us like a ton of bricks!!! I was coming down with a cold, we were very tired, but I called the front desk to ask them why the smell was so bad. She offered to move us, but by the way the whole hotel looked and smelled even in the lobby I said never mind.

Not only was the room smelly, there were no amenities, thread bare towels, cracks along the baseboards, smeared paint, and a room door handle with a lock. We could deadbolt it while inside but not while away. A slight swift kick could knock the door down in an instant. No room safe, a tv with odd and random channels, and the worst of it was a step up into the bathroom. My heel of my shoe caught the first time stepping down and threw me into the closet. One good reason the closet was there. My husband put a chem light there at night so we could the step see without killing oursleves.

The bathroom sink faucet took forever…about 15 seconds to fill the palm of my hand, with minimal flow. I just used the tub faucet if I was in a hurry.

The ONLY saving grace were the windows. They opened wide, and to a partial beach view, and a nice breeze through our stay lessened the intense musty odor. There was a little refrigerator in the room.

Our maid service was below par, not removing a bar glass and used set of utensils I brought from the restaurant as well as a mug I used to mix my Thera flu.

Staff was very nice and we were provided a safe for our passports. The restaurant/bar was very nice which deceives the appearance of the interior of the hotel. The food was very good and had nice ambiance. The location is ok, if you want to walk along the beach at English Bay or go to Stanley Park. Speaking of the beach, we had a lovely view of the various drug addicts smoking their crack pipes, as well as a wake up call at midnight with an ambulance and fire truck tending to the need of a passed out homeless person against a tree. This is of course no fault of the hotel.

Hotel Taxes are very high here. They equal about 30% and for this particular room we paid $335.00 USD per night. In my opinion, way too much for the room.

This hotel was recommended by a friend of a friend who loves in Vancouver. Maybe that person has not seen the rooms, or at least ours. It was a huge disappointment coming to Canada and Vancouver for the first time. Even our tour guide one day said he had much better recommendations and would never recommend the Sylvia.

It is great to preserve history and a 1912 building that is beloved by locals. Lots of nice photos in the lobby of what it once was. BUT, a facelift since maybe the 1960’s is necessary to keep this old girl presentable,
