Amazing Resort and Staff-Tree Bar Phenomenal
Pros:

Our 2nd time to Belize and it was just as amazing as the 1st time we stayed. The service staff at Matachica is always on task never a missed moment. They remembered us from the previous year and was accommodating every day and our names remembered and room. Our excursion with the staff was both educational and fun, food was amazing, all of the above. We can't wait to go back and enjoy the experience all over again. Thanks to a wonderful experience and to the staff at Matachica. It was so nice to see the same staff and receive the same service over and over. 10 stars.

Pros:

Nothing but good things to say about our relaxing stay at Matachica. What a peaceful lovely place. We were so happy with every aspect. The staff are incredible: kind, curious, interesting and friendly. So well trained. The ethos of barefoot luxury is carried out in the activities, the staff availability, the beautiful grounds, the very small details (such as a changing baked treat every day at turn down service), and the easygoing and helpful staff service. Shout outs to Egar, Stephen, Julio, and of course, lovely Justina who organized our Captains Table! And everyone else too.

A mixed bag
Pros:

A little far from other restaurants so "captive audience" unless hire quad bike or taxi (expensive)
Very strong sewage smell all day - drains in bathroom not functioning properly (toilet bubbled up on flush and gurgling in other drains!)
Kelp clearing constant - started early with quad bike and trailer to collect it -up and down in front of room most of day
Room spacious - wardrobes a little cheaply made. Shower dreadful - dirty and only half of holes worked. Poor stream and could not be fixed apparently.
Cleanliness fine.
Noise as above with kelp clearing
Very friendly service in bistro - Yennifer esp great, professional and friendly -some others less efficient especially if busy (have to keep asking for bread and the bill)
Snorkelling great and v informative swimming guide and boat captain.

Great Tropical Getaway
Pros:

A lovely tropical getaway at an adults-only resort.

The resort is secluded from the town of San Pedro on a quiet stretch of beach. The casitas are perfect, and the food excellent.

If you are looking for a resort with miles of accessible beach it is not the resort for you, but the pool and dock area were a great substitute.

Nice place to relax
Pros:

This is a beautiful comfortable place for a few days relaxation. Food is expensive but of good quality. My only grumble was regarding the continental breakfast which was included in our room rate: it included juice, large sugary pastries, jam and fried bread, very sweet granola bars and fruit - a huge sugar overload. The only way to keep breakfast healthy was to opt out and buy from the alternative menu. This seems a waste, it would be nice if there was a light healthy option such as yogurt and unsweetened cereal without having to spend more money.

Beautiful, relaxed & welcoming
Pros:

We enjoyed our stay in the Passion Fruit casita. It was very clean, quiet and private. The on-site restaurants featured delicious fresh meals, and we enjoyed the five-course meal at the captain's table on our final night.
Coffee was delivered to our casita each morning just as we requested at 8 a.m., except for the days we were up and gone to snorkel with the stingrays and sharks at Stingray Alley. We enjoyed the excursion to Caye Caulker with snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The variety of fish was amazing and our guide was very helpful pointing out unique sitings, such as the moray eel, lionfish and lobster.

Besides being on the more expensive side of things and far away from everything, my only complaint is the quantity of sand fly bites I came home with. I felt like we could have been warned more fully about using the bug repellent. I had no previous experience with these creatures and was quite uncomfortable for over a week.

Pros:

This is a great boutique resort. It is the place you go to for rest and relaxation. It maybe holds at most 60-70 guests, but this allows for better personalized service and getting to know the staff along with meeting other couples. Our standout servers were Tony, Jose, Carlos, and Julio.

We had the seafront Casita, so when we stepped out of our hut, we stepped into the beach sand looking at the ocean.

Tip: If you eat at the indoor bar, you can get access to both restaurants menus so you can mix & match the food dishes.

A rare gem in Belize: world class hospitality, location, and dining
Pros:

Im not one to usually leave reviews but matachica was such an amazing experience.

All the staff are wonderful, genuine, polite and kind. The food is Michelin star worthy (I’ve been to resorts with Michelin star restaurants nowhere near the level of the food at Matachica) and the excursions are plentiful and engaging and not overcrowded (groups of 6, or private)

The beach is beautiful and has clear water stretching until the reef which you can explore with complimentary kayaks and paddle boards.

It is clear that matachica is not just a revenue generating asset to the owner but a passion project, this is what hospitality is about.

From the top of my head special shoutout and thanks to Alfonso, Josue, Chris, “Bigs”, Viktor, Charles, Gustavo and everyone else who made our stay so pleasant!

Colorful lovely isolated resort with limited activity
Pros:

Matachica is a beautiful resort with terrific staff and lovely colorful romantic huts close to the beach. The food was tasty at each meal. Let me tell you why I give it four stars... if these aren't an issue for you then I recommend you go. We have learned that we are not isolated resort folks. We like to have the ability to eat and stroll outside the resort. You really can't get anywhere from Matachica except by renting a golf cart yourself from town and then driving for 40 minutes on a very bad dirt road. Otherwise, there are a couple of ocean excursions each day . We enjoyed the day trip to Caye Calker! There are a couple of snorkeling spots which are cool with sharks and rays and some wonderful fish, but no super coral reef as we had hoped without going out to sea for several hours each way (and we were told it wasn't interesting for snorkeling). Since the snorkeling was our reason for visiting Belize, we were disappointed. Also on top of every purchase is a 25% tax and gratuity. That means a hefty bill at the end where they are the only place to eat. We were there 4 nights which was just fine but since we're not good at lounging by the pool, I realized that it wasn't a good fit for any longer visit. Still if you love a lounging vacation with a few outings, this might suit you very well.

An expensive stay
Pros:

We were met at the airport by the hotel and taken by golf buggy to the pier for our 10 minute boat transfer to the hotel.

On arrival we received a friendly greeting and complimentary drink of choice which was a nice touch. The hotel provides pre breakfast tea or coffee delivered to your cabin at a time of your choosing, again a nice touch as is the nightly turn down service.

Our accommodation was a seaview cabin, spacious and beautifully appointed with quality toiletries and complementary bug spray to repel the sand flies.

We arrived on a Tuesday when the hotel was promoting ‘Taco Tuesday’ which meant 2 for 1 Margaritas and Tacos at US$3 for 3 tacos. It’s obviously very popular as there was no seating space at the bar for newcomers or in the surrounding bar area. Live music was enjoyed by some but not those looking to enjoy peaceful rest.

There were two dining options at the hotel. A bistro and a more formal dining experience; we opted for the latter on our first night. The menu in Mambo the more formal restaurant was heavily biased toward seafood/crustaceans and dishes are prepared in advanced so no option to have any variations to the dishes. Service was professional but not personable. Both our dishes of Belizean chicken and seared tuna were excellent and beautifully presented.

Food and drinks were expensive compared to local restaurants clearly taking advantage of captive customers; however the quality and presentation was high. Menu prices and excursions incurred an additional mandatory 15% service charge and 12.5% government tax applied. At 8.30pm the restaurant was emptied of guests.

Breakfast was included as part of our meal plan with plenty of choice. If you have an early departure before breakfast the only take away food option offered was a peanut butter and jam sandwich.

The main town of San Pedro was not within walking range. A round trip in a taxi costed c.US$100. Many guests hired golf buggies to get around which worked out at a similar price.

We enjoyed a couple of nights stay just to relax on the beach but service at times was hit and miss, food and drinks were expensive and we felt our money could have been better spent elsewhere.

Relaxing resort with great service and great food.
Pros:

My wife and I had a very relaxing 4 days at Matachica resort. We were treated wonderfully by everyone from the front desk welcome by an always smiling, always helpful Heidi, to the beach staff that went beyond duty to retrieve my wife's wind-blown sunglasses from the bottom of the pier, to the owner of the resort, who did not let us leave our dinner table without his fabulous chef's desserts (Stephen, the pastry chef, also happens to be his son, and trained at the Culinary Institute of America). Stephen also contributed each morning to the sumptuous continental breakfast with different, innovative pastries, and he made his own ice creams and sorbets (we tried two, the best mango sorbet we have ever had, and a great banana ice-cream).
The cabanas were very comfortable and supplied with every amenity, and the service included nightly desserts from Stephen. There was only one pool, but large enough for this relatively small resort and very clean, with an integrated hot tub. Free canoes were provided to take guests to the barrier reef. The snorkeling there was very nice, to the extent that our guided paid snorkeling trip to the "shark alley" area did not provide a much greater display of marine life. There were nurse sharks and sting-rays and colorful fish 1/4 mile from the hotel reachable by canoe. One suggestion to make guest snorkeling easier, would be to place a small platform near the boeys, away from the reef, so as to assist with disembarking and embarking from the canoe without even disturbing the ocean floor. Another suggestion would be to pioneer the use of less polluting electric boats for the frequent short trips into San Pedro or even more importantly, to the various reef locations. The staff allowed us to tag along on rides to and from San Pedro when guests were coming or leaving, so we chose not to rent the ubiquitous golf carts that crowded that small town.
We would gladly recommend this adults only resort to visitors looking for a relaxing few days and some really good food.

Barefoot luxury with seamless hospitality
Pros:

Matachica is absolutely gorgeous. Just a short boat ride from San Pedro Town, it feels beautifully removed from the hustle and bustle — peaceful, private, and effortlessly chic. The setting is stunning: white sandy beaches, incredible shades of blue, and that perfect barefoot-luxury vibe where everything feels relaxed yet refined.

The food was outstanding — genuinely some of the best we’ve had in Belize, and we’ve lived here for 15 years and work in the hospitality industry. We couldn’t fault a single dish. There was great variety, everything was fresh, and all dietary requirements were handled seamlessly. We were completely wowed.

The service and attention to detail truly set Matachica apart. Warm, friendly, intuitive hospitality paired with thoughtful touches — handwritten notes, fresh cookies and recipe cards, lovely turndown service, and beautiful flowers. It all felt effortless, personal, and incredibly well done.

We loved our three days here and only wish we could have stayed longer. If you’re coming to San Pedro, we highly, highly, highly recommend Matachica — 100%.

We also strongly recommend doing the beach-and-jungle split stay with Gaïa Riverlodge for the ultimate Belize experience.

A full 100% recommendation from seasoned industry locals living in Belize for 15 years.

Reef and Rainforest Casual Luxury
Pros:

We had a great four nights stay at MehtaChica combining it with a three nights stay at Gaia River Lodge celebrating my 70th birthday . The service, accommodations and food were all great. The resort had a great combination of laid-back luxury that we were looking for. The Concierge was very helpful and the activities were well planned and executed. Particular shout out to Victor who helped on our fishing trip and drove us on both boat and car into San Pedro. He made us feel comfortable and cared for, and we found him very insightful and intelligent.

Excellent hotel and location
Pros:

Great hotel with fantastic staff. Our sea breeze casita had everything we needed and it was equipped to deal with any mosquitos and bugs however we didnt have any issues with either throughout our stay. Bar staff were friendly and knowledgable and we thouroughly enjoyed our rum & tequila tasting sessions. Whilst at Matachica we arranged a trip over the blue hole which was superb and a private snorkelling trip and visit to Caye Caulker. Victor our captain and Mauro were brilliant. Hol chan & shark ray alley did not disappoint.

Very nice stay at Matachica
Pros:

Very nice stay at Matachica, we specially enjoyed the people working in the hotel, who made their best to satisfy our requests. Special thanks to Khar, Jeremy and Luis! And of course to all the persons we don’t remember the name!
The only negative point, and therefore we don’t give the five stars, is the prices at the restaurant. Breakfast, despite very good, is not at the level of the price we pay. I have been traveling all around the world, but I never paid USD 18.- plus taxes for an omelette. One tea: USD 5.- plus taxes…! At the level Matachica aims to be, that should be corrected and they should offer a real breakfast to their guests.
For the rest, we highly recommend Matachica.
