Best resort on Ambergris Caye. The food was amazing, the rooms were clean and beautiful, and best of all, the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. The entire experience felt genuine and we had a wonderful trip. We will be retuning!
The hospitality, views, amenities, food, pool, experiences and the suites were amazing. The A/C in the room could have been cooler but it was still comfortable.
I have always had Belize on my wishlist of places to visit, and we were looking for a warm location that was fairly easy to get to, for a 7 night trip to just relax and unwind. After some research, we decided to stay at Matachica for 7 nights. We’ve stayed in some fairly exclusive resorts in other countries, so this seemed like we’d get the peace and quiet we appreciate, with great service and excellent food.
Upon arrival at the little airport, we were picked up and escorted to the hotel via boat - a lovely way to start the trip. It was very early, around 9am, so they immediately offered us breakfast and a warm welcome.
The hotel itself is adorable - the little colorful casitas dotted around the property are so cute, each named after a fruit that most closely aligns to the color of the building. We were in Pear. A perfect location one row back from the beach, but with a nice view from our porch, where we spent countless hours reading in the late afternoons and early mornings.
Sadly, we were there during sargassum season, so we weren’t able to enjoy the beach as much as we’d hoped. The hotel did an amazing job cleaning it up each day, but it’s near impossible to keep up with the amount generated each day.
When we were planning the trip, we thought we might venture off property for dinner a few times, and had picked a few places in town. After a few meals at the resort, we cancelled all our plans to eat elsewhere, as the food at both restaurants was amazing and the menu variety is outstanding so you literally don’t need to leave. We had 7 dinners here and I only repeated a dish once, by choice. The desserts and bread will BLOW you away. Breakfast each day always included two pastries, and both were always so good. The baking going on at this restaurant is incredible.
We did several excursions with the hotel and would highly recommend the Hol Chan & Shark Alley excursion. We also did the private sunset snorkel, and while we enjoyed it, it’s too expensive for what you get. I think they should make this a small group activity to offset/share the cost. I would recommend finding another way to snorkel at Mexico rocks in a group setting. Lastly, we had the hotel organize an all day flat fishing trip, which was great, they packed a nice lunch for us and we had a good time.
In advance of our arrival, we booked a 90 minute couples aromatherapy massage on our second day to unwind and pamper ourselves. We were both really pleased with our massages. We like it so much we booked a second one for the last day of our trip!
We did end up renting a golf cart to explore the island, and while we are glad we did, you really only need a golf cart for a day or two. First, the drive to town is so slow as the roads are terrible. Also, the town of San Pedro wasn’t all that great. I love to shop and buy locally made souvenirs, but the quality and selection at the stores left me underwhelmed. The town felt more run down than quaint, and that makes me sad. This island has so much potential, but it’s just not being cared for in the way that I had hoped.
We also drove to Secret Beach to check it out, and while the water was calm and clear, the vibe was not for us. We are not party people, and it felt like it was set up for permanent spring break. However, we did go to the end of the road to the left to Mistico, which someone at Matachica recommended, and it was less crowded and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, I give Matachica 5 stars. The service, the food, the rooms, the spa and the pool were amazing. I’m so glad we came to experience the barrier reef and Belize.
Loved our stay here for the most part. Our villa was super comfortable and was steps from the sea. The sargassum took away from the entire experience however, which is not the fault of the resort. We were unable to swim out into the ocean, and even from the pier, there is no way to avoid the sargassum. They do have kayaks you can take out to the edge of the reef to swim, but have to avoid the boat traffic. The staff were great, the food was also very good, and we enjoyed the pool.
From the moment we arrived at Matachica, it was clear this place operates on a completely different level. The service is truly unmatched—every single staff member introduced themselves, remembered our names, and even picked up on our preferences in a way that felt incredibly personal and intentional. It’s a level of attention to detail I’ve honestly never experienced at any other property.
The property itself is stunning—peaceful, beautifully designed, and perfectly removed from the crowds. Yes, it’s a bit of a journey to get there, but that distance is exactly what makes it so special. The quiet, the privacy, the feeling of being completely immersed—it’s worth every second of the trip out.
The sargassum was definitely noticeable during our stay and did make the beach less usable, even beyond the pier at times. That said, what stood out was how hard the team worked to manage it. You could tell they were constantly clearing it and doing everything possible to minimize the impact—something completely out of their control, but handled with real care and effort.
What makes Matachica feel so luxurious is that nothing feels transactional. The complimentary transportation, the seamless service, the way everything just flows—you’re not constantly being nickel-and-dimed. You’re simply taken care of.
And the food—honestly unbelievable. Every single meal was better than the last. It became something we genuinely looked forward to each day.
Matachica isn’t just a beautiful resort—it’s an experience defined by thoughtful hospitality, incredible attention to detail, and a team that clearly takes pride in what they do. I cannot wait to come back.
The staff are absolutely fantastic. Moses, Steve, and everyone else who helped us during our stay really made our visit that much more special. It is probably the best resort in all of San Pedro.
Downsides: it is advertised that you can snorkel on the resort, but you can’t really do any snorkeling without a guide. The dock is too murky to snorkel from and you need to go further out. And none of it is really complimentary, so this is not the resort for you if your priority is to snorkel on your own off shore.
The resort itself is beautiful, but it’s not really private. You can see right into your neighbor’s casita if you have your windows open.
The last downside (which is out of the resort’s control) is the sargassum. You can smell it throughout the whole resort. The staff did the best that they can to clean it up, but it is just too much. Honestly, for anyone visiting a Belizean island, I’d highly recommend staying somewhere opposite the side of the sargassum. However, if that’s not an option, then Matachica is your best bet.
The entire vibe and feel of the resort was relaxing. We stayed 4 nights and didn’t feel the need to leave the resort once.
Clean, excellent service, scenic, serene and comfortable!
Truly classified as a Resort, will visit again and highly recommended.
I cant say enough good things about Matachica. The experience was just amazing! The grounds are beautiful. The staff is simply incredible. They went out of theirvway on more than one occasion to accommodate us. The food was top notch. The daily events and excursions were a great addition. Our only complaint was that the Sargassum algae was terrible, but that has nothing to do with the resort. That's a regional problem. They worked all day every day trying to keep it clear, and did great, considering the size of the task. I highly recommend Matachica.
We love Matachica. We have traveled all over the Caribbean and Matachica is the first place we have wanted to come back to. After 2 trips we plan on coming back every few years now. Amazing service, atmosphere food and drinks. second to none!
The beach casitas are cute and cozy, and we loved being surrounded by nature and so close to the sea. The staff were all super friendly and helpful, and the food and drinks were all amazing. We enjoyed just relaxing by the pool, snorkeling, and the evening sunset “schmooze cruise.” There was a lot of the sargassum on the beach, but that is a problem for the whole area right now and Matachica was much better at trying to keep it cleaned off than other places we saw. We just spent more time at the pool than the beach, which was fine! We had a great time! This is one of the few places my husband and have come back to a second time, and will definitely return!
We stayed at Matachica for 10 days. The hotel is absolutely AMAZING! The villas are lovely and fully stocked with everything you could need. The staff are very kind and quite accommodating. We could not have met nicer people than the people who work here. We did 2 days of boat rental with Victor and Moro which was spectacular for both fishing and snorkeling. Finally, the food is terrific and the restaurants are simply delicious. We could not have enjoyed our stay more. So sad to leave.
Stinking piles on seaweed covering the beach. You can’t even step onto the beach. Bad communication between the concierge the staff and the guests. The food was mediocre.
The art work and design of the property is very tasteful. The huts are cute.
We felt stuck on the property. We chose the hotel because it is advertised as a snorkeling location. However the concierge told us we could not snorkel and we thought that we would be enjoying the beach but it was not possible because of the seaweed problem. So we had to figure out other ways to get off the property and the staff was not helpful. In fact the staff is a big reason why our stay was not disappointing. The front desk staff were defensive and not forthcoming about any alternatives. I had to pull any truthful information from them. Because it was impossible to leave the property for dinner without spending hundreds of dollars, we were forced to eat there which is so so expensive. The food is good but very expensive.
Matachica is a wonderful, relaxed resort.
They will pick you up from the marine terminal (or from the airport).
We arrived by the ferry. We were picked up from the marine terminal, and brought to the resort by boat. It's a wonderful way to start an island vacation. At the end of our time there we went back to the marine terminal by boat, but at times they will take you by van (depending on schedules, number of people, etc).
It's a very quiet, relaxed, peaceful resort. Adults only, as far as I could tell.
The entire staff was wonderful - very helpful in answering questions, and repeatedly making sure that we were well taken care of.
Some special nice touches included: Staff brought early morning coffee, or tea to your casita ( at a time designated by you). They came around the resort and offered to bring drinks wherever you were on the resort property, ( i.e.- By the pool, on the beach, while we were on the dock lounges, or on our casita decks). They brought a plate of nachos around in the evening while guests were lounging. They cleaned / freshened up the room twice per day.
The restaurants, both Mambo, and Mambo Bistro were excellent. We enjoyed both the food, and the service.
The beaches have sargassum, but the staff cleaned the beaches two times per day.
The property in general is beautiful, with nice vegetation. It's a very beach-like vibe, with sand paths, and direct access to their beach.
The pool area, and the pool itself are very large for a resort of this size.
It's very clean, and well maintained. Plenty of seats, lounges, etc for everyone.
Some things that could be improved:
There are multiple two person kayaks, but they could also have some one person kayaks.
They could offer simple things to do, such as corn hole, or horse shoes, etc
They could have a more substantial gym.
To get around on the island it appears that most people will rent a golf cart. Unfortunately, the roads are in terrible shape, so it's quite a bumpy ride to get around. There's very few roads, so you really can't get lost.
Would we recommend this place - Absolutely.
