Had a wonderful stay here in a beautiful historic hotel a few years back as we were touring by car. It is sad to now read many of the negative reviews as they are so far out of whack with our fond memories of our stay. But I guess like anything, regression is possible without the requisite commitment to service quality.
I got married at the Luton Hoo last year and they made what should have been a happy exciting time into one of the most stressful and frustrating times I had ever experienced, it got to the stage where I had to hire a wedding planner to ensure it all went smoothly on the day. At the time I felt leaving a review would have been a waste of time and I would never visit in my personal time or pay for the privilege anymore.
However, I recently had to visit again for work and found it to be the same chaotic experience. I have been visiting the Luton Hoo for 13 years and have seen this once grand hotel turn into a generic hotel. I would imagine they will lose a star in the next year or two as they have fallen in every category from house keeping to service and amenities. Once they offered generous Molton Brown products in their bathrooms to using a generic brand, this is one example in many and these changes have been carried out throughout the hotel. Once I would have benchmarked the Luton Hoo to Stoke Park but not anymore. The new owners haven’t got a scooby doo how to manage a hotel like this one and really need to stick to running airport hotels.
The same silly mistakes that were made at our wedding were made at this conference; the lady that made things very stressful completely blanked me which I thought was very professional. The only shining light at the Luton Hoo is Stephen and his team but when you are surrounded by people who constantly make mistakes then the mistakes will continue.
This tired old girl deserves owners and a manager to guard and maintain the wonderful history associated with this hotel and trying to penny pinch at a 5* hotel while continuing to charge huge prices will never win any prizes.
Thank you so much to Magda, Joao and Chris for making our weekend 27/28 Sept, such great fun. From the lovely welcome greeting on check-in, Magda taking us to our Room, which was a small suite, beautiful, plasterwork, frieze and frescoes, amazing heritage decor, details and features! I hope the re-development will be sympathetic to the history and original features, like marble, windows and skirtings etc The shower was brilliant, powerful and we had an enamel roll-top bath too. Despite the looming closure for refurbishment the team, looked after us throughout, asking if all was going well etc. Chris is a font of all Luton Hoo knowledge and I could have followed him around for hours. We had a little tour of the Queen Elizabeth and Princess Zia Suites, The Romanov Chapel and the Churchill room, Chris has many anecdotes to share. The spa was great, the jacuzzi was fabulously warm and so big. The grounds and trees are stunning, lakes, Rock Garden will be brought back to life. I really do hope the current team do have the opportunity to return once the facilities are updated. I'm so pleased we had the chance to enjoy Luton Hoo as it is now and really look forward to seeing how the refurbishment goes and visiting in a few years, even to test out the new facilities before opening. Best Wishes Kiran and Paul x
Great staff. Helpful
Unfortunately our stay did have a few hiccups that the staff tried their best to rectify but in the end it just made for a bit of an uncomfortable staying and leaving experience. May be something to do with the upcoming 2-3 year renovation of the hotel but definitely felt like a few things were off for a 5 star experience. Would place it somewhere around a solid 4.
I can't tell you how much I love Luton Hoo, it grounds, trees, and peace. I wish the house and the staff well over the next 3 years refurbishment. Madga, Chris and Pooja were particularly wonderful but the hotel's staff are so passionate and wonderful and it really shows. This was our 5th visit and I can't wait for our 6th. Thank you Luton Hoo team so much!
I cannot believe I didn’t find this place sooner but I feel extremely lucky to have visited before the restoration. Everything went above and beyond my expectations. The location js stunning! The customer service is top level. I felt extremely well looked after. I also liked the spa and the restaurant. HUGE THANK YOU TO CHRIS for making my stay so special and memorable. He is Wonderful person. I will always keep this place in my heart. And hope
To return soon. ❤️
Beautiful location
Waiting refurb in September, hotel was very tired and crumbling. Spa availability not kept updated on website, no availability when e/mailed. So didn’t get to use the spa. Golf course closed - nothing noted on website when booked. Advertised as spa and golf hotel. It was neither so felt duped and certainly not value for money.
This hotel is spectacular, set in the most beautiful grounds. There is plenty of parking and the concierge and reception staff were so helpful and friendly; and the offer of a car to take you to the spa was a real treat with 2 small children and all our bags.
Sadly the attention to detail with service wasn’t what I expected from a 5 star hotel. We waited a long time to be offered a drink in the bar, and had to ask the second time, and the waitress looked very put out that we were ordering a second drink, quite rude to be honest, it was as if we were putting her out. It wasn’t busy, I might have understood it if it had been.
The fridge in our room wasn’t working, we needed to keep milk in there for our toddler. I called reception who were very apologetic and said someone would be there at 9am to have a look at it. However, nothing was done about it, which was disappointing.
There was only sachets of decaf coffee in the room.
The beds were really comfortable and the breakfast was outstanding.
All in all a wonderful hotel, but over priced and lacking the attention to detail that you expect from a 5 star hotel.
We had the Queen Elizabeth Suite for a couple of nights. Marvellous room, great dinners, great drinks. Everyone was very friendly. Walks in the grounds were amazing. We wish everyone well during the renovations and will be back in a couple of years. Thanks for looking after us so well and so close to the closure, nothing slipped in any way at all. Bravo.
Don’t bother. We have been here many times over the years, however today’s visit was extremely disappointing.
They are closing in 2 weeks for a re-furb but you think it was closed now. No staff, no organisation. The spa day ruined by a total mix up of treatments and forgetting I had one booked in. You’re paying the same money but deep relaxation room closed. No glasses for water and drinking out of plastic red cups.
Lunch is now in the main house but again no staff.
The place has clearly been working to a shut down for some weeks.
Great!
The staff were very pleasant and polite
The shower drain was very slow, causing water to backup. Might just need a deep clean
The history of the building.
We arrived to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We included this information on our booking form. The first room we were allocated was a huge treck, finally found, turned out to be a building site, under going repairs. The treck back to reception to report the issues, with photographs, was met with an apology.
New room, this time escorted by Magda to room 131. The best staff member by far. However, every day, we reported that the aircon does not work, along with the internet and TV. Every day, this was acknowledged by the front of house staff. It went no further. Very frustrating. Be warned, this hotel is in "Shut Down" mode. They are closing at the end of September for two years.
Finally, parked at the front of the building, in a prominent position, is a car belonging to the hotel. This sends a message to all guests, the hotel parking is more important than the guests. Guests can park elsewhere. Not even Dubai parks its complimentary Ferrari's at the front of house.

Amazing unexpected upgrade. The room size and facilities. Comfortable bed. The gardens and parkland.
Hot food should be served on hot or, at the very least, warmed plates. Pacing of time between courses was off, waiting too long for plates to be cleared and food to arrive. Hot breakfast buffet selections were all luke warm to cold, even before putting onto a cold plate, so disappointing.
