Historic Charm and True Southern Hospitality
Pros:

We stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn last week as a family of four, including our nine year old and spirited (read: feral) two year old kids. It was truly one of the most memorable travel stays we have had. While I can appreciate that our toddler was not likely a preferred guest, every interaction with staff was warm, patient, and full of true Southern hospitality. The other guests also embraced our children, which was appreciated. Staying in the spacious John Rutledge room was particularly special, as it felt like stepping back in time and it invited interesting conversations with our oldest child about the history of the property. The breakfasts were another delight. They were delicious, fresh and thoughtfully prepared each morning. If you are visiting Charleston and want a place that blends hospitality with rich history, John Rutledge House Inn is truly unmatched. We can't wait to return (when the youngest kid is older).

Grand stay at the Rutledge House Inn
Pros:

Traveling with my husband and pup to Charleston for a few days; neither of us had been to Charleston. This was a drive trip also to Savannah and Hilton Head SC. Charleston exceeded our expectations and so did the Rutledge House. The history alone of this beautiful Inn is worth the stay; we were greeted warmly by the front desk attendant and was provided much information about pup friendly places to eat as well as visit. We stayed in the Carriage House which was lovely and had our breakfast each morning in the courtyard. The Inn and the surrounding landscape is beautifully taken care of. We would not hesitate to once again stay at the Rutledge House Inn. Well done Rutledge House Inn!

Amazing place to stay in Charleston!
Pros:

Hospitality at its absolute finest! The small details make a huge difference. You definitely feel like you’re in the upper echelon of society while staying there. Centrally located but yet you feel like you’re far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Tea time was a nice treat in the afternoon and breakfast options are the same as a diner.

Still the Most Exceptional Stay — Even After Traveling the World
Pros:

If I had to choose one word to describe my stay at the John Rutledge House Inn, it would still be phenomenal — even after stays in New York, London, Budapest, and many other world-class destinations, nothing has topped the warmth, elegance, and exceptional service I received here.

From the moment I stepped into this stunning Georgian-style home, built before the American Revolution, I was greeted with genuine joy and care... especially from Nicole, who went above and beyond to make sure my stay was nothing short of perfect. Every member of the team radiated professionalism and kindness, and it made a lasting impression on me.

Maria, the chef, prepared the best poached eggs I’ve ever had. Nicole, made sure every gluten-free detail, from breakfast to Tea Time, was beautifully taken care of, which meant so much. The nightcap service — offering brandy, port, or sherry in the evening — added a beautiful, old-world charm to my evenings.

My room was spotless and dust-free, and the turndown service and housekeeping were consistently top-tier. This is the kind of care that’s hard to find — the kind that makes you feel truly looked after.

The location is also ideal: just a few short blocks to the waterfront and perfectly positioned to explore Charleston’s historic district entirely on foot.

Even after visiting world-renowned destinations, the John Rutledge House Inn remains the gold standard. It has honestly ruined me for other hotels — and I can’t wait to return.

Pros:

We have been Rutledge House devotees for many years. Love where it is(parking!), the people(lots of “regulars” who have actually become friends) and a lovely place. We always feel comfortable and well taken care of and breakfast isn’t bad either!

Best Inn in Charleston by Far!
Pros:

We’ve made many trips to Charleston over the last 20 years and tried a handful of other inns in the earliest years. But since we discovered the Rutledge House we’ve never stayed anywhere else.

We love the spacious suites with comfortable sitting rooms and large bedrooms with Tempur-Pedic mattresses. The JRH staff are helpful and the concierge kindly coordinates all of our restaurant reservations beautifully.

Breakfasts are diverse and well prepared, served indoors or in the private garden, and afternoon teas with hors d’oeuvres are delightful and different each day.

Highly recommend the John Rutledge House!

Exceptional Charleston Getaway
Pros:

I visited Charleston, SC as a destination vacation to celebrate my birthday. I chose the John Rutledge House Inn as my hotel due to its fine reputation and proximity to downtown ameity. I got so much more than I expected.
The service staff was friendly and attentive. The occomdations were clasic and comfortable. I was a sort walk from the battery, the market and so much dining & entertainment.
I highly reccommend this location for any upscale Charleston excusion.
