My husband & I stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn the first full week of April for our 25th wedding anniversary trip.
We can not even begin to describe how much we enjoyed our stay here. The place is gorgeous! The room we stayed in (Room 4) is GRAND! Afternoon tea, spectacular, breakfast (we had it in our room every morning) was WONDERFUL. Turn down service was lovely.
The location is super convenient to many of the things one would want to do/see.
We’ve only been home a few weeks and we want to go back already.
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this establishment.
I had a wonderful time visiting Charleston. The historic inn is beautiful and in a great location. My Carriage House room was quiet and cozy. I slept like a baby every night & awoke to a delicious, breakfast every morning. The staff is professional, friendly and knowledgeable about things to do while there. I highly recommend staying here & will definitely be returning in the future.
We stayed in the Carriage House out back. Our room was great and the staff wonderful. You fill out a door hanger the night before what you want for breakfast, when, and where. We ate breakfast in the Courtyard two mornings and the ballroom in the main house the third (little cooler that morning). A lot of little nice touches like cold bottled water in a cooler outside so you could grab a water before you explore. Longest walk to dinner was probably about 7 minutes.
My husband and I stayed here for a relaxing getaway and had the absolute best time. The Inn is beautifully maintained, and the rooms are both charming and impeccably kept. Every staff member we encountered was incredibly kind and genuinely interested in making our stay special, which made such a difference. The breakfast was outstanding. I eat gluten-free, and they were exceptionally accommodating with a great variety of options each day, and I especially loved the gluten-free English muffins. They were very careful with gluten-free preparation, while my husband was still able to fully enjoy all of the regular offerings. The location is perfect, right in the heart of a historic district and within walking distance to so much. We didn’t bring a car and were able to walk everywhere during our stay, which we loved. We also visited their sister restaurant, Circa 1886, and the food and service there were just as amazing. We would absolutely return and highly recommend this Inn to anyone looking for a special and relaxing getaway.
This is a really special place- historic, beautifully maintained, well located and staffed by the most helpful friendly group imaginable! We stayed 3 nights in a Carriage House room enjoying the delicious included breakfasts and late afternoon tea and late evening port and sherry service. We only wish we could have stayed longer! I highly recommend this fine bed & breakfast/hotel/inn. It seemed to me to provide the very best services typically offered in all 3 categories.
Stayed at The John Rutledge House for two nights while touring Charleston with our family of 4. The inn does an amazing job retaining the historic feel of the building while also offering the comforts of a modern hotel. My nine year olds loved the experience of staying at a building that is part of history and thought afternoon tea was the best thing ever. The staff was also outstanding with everyone being welcoming and helpful without exception.
If you wish to Step Back In History and enjoy the "Elegance of Times Gone By" then look no further the "The John Rutledge House Inn" in the historic district of Charleston SC. Inn Keeper Rashica Coakley and her staff are dedicatee to providing you with an experience that you will truly take home as a WONDERFUL memory.
The Inn is located so close to everything! Walking distance to King St, Meeting St and all the hot spots of Charlston. Its dedicated parking lot was also very convenient. We took our dog and were welcomed with bowls and treats and a listing of dog friendly venues. We had a lovely room in the carriage house and it was very easy for my husband to take Loki out to do his business. We had the option to select our breakfast and enjoyed it in our room. Coffee was available at 6:00am which was wonderful! It was truly a wonderful experience from check in to check out!
We had a wonderful stay at this charming, historic inn. The rooms are immaculate and comfortable, the grounds (even in February) were beautiful and the breakfast was excellent.
What really made our stay memorable was the staff. John set the tone from the moment we walked in. He was warm, friendly and helpful. He ensured that we had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. Everyone we encountered was friendly, very knowledgeable and helpful.
This place is wonderful.
Great sleep. Great breakfast. Great history.
Since we only had an overnight stay in Charleston, my wife and I wanted to have a brief way to experience the history and charm of Charleston. The John Rutledge House, built in 1763 by John Rutledge (one of the signers of the US Constitution), was the perfect way to absorb that. Since we had a Sunday night stay on a frigid night, the Inn was only occupied by us and another couple. Because of that, the staff upgraded us to the George Washington Suite - a huge sitting room with fireplace, a sumptuous king bedroom (also with fireplace), and marble shower and bathtub with jacuzzi. It was beautifully restored, preserving the historic aspects while offering modern "creature comforts".
The staff (basically a concierge when you enter the Inn) couldn't have been more accommodating, making us dinner reservations at S.N.O.B. (highly recommended upscale low country cuisine restaurant), and helping with unloading our car and then loading on checkout. Breakfast, served in our room, was wonderful.
A once in a lifetime experience! If you're wanting to experience Charleston to the fullest, stay here -- well worth it!
We stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn last week as a family of four, including our nine year old and spirited (read: feral) two year old kids. It was truly one of the most memorable travel stays we have had. While I can appreciate that our toddler was not likely a preferred guest, every interaction with staff was warm, patient, and full of true Southern hospitality. The other guests also embraced our children, which was appreciated. Staying in the spacious John Rutledge room was particularly special, as it felt like stepping back in time and it invited interesting conversations with our oldest child about the history of the property. The breakfasts were another delight. They were delicious, fresh and thoughtfully prepared each morning. If you are visiting Charleston and want a place that blends hospitality with rich history, John Rutledge House Inn is truly unmatched. We can't wait to return (when the youngest kid is older).
Traveling with my husband and pup to Charleston for a few days; neither of us had been to Charleston. This was a drive trip also to Savannah and Hilton Head SC. Charleston exceeded our expectations and so did the Rutledge House. The history alone of this beautiful Inn is worth the stay; we were greeted warmly by the front desk attendant and was provided much information about pup friendly places to eat as well as visit. We stayed in the Carriage House which was lovely and had our breakfast each morning in the courtyard. The Inn and the surrounding landscape is beautifully taken care of. We would not hesitate to once again stay at the Rutledge House Inn. Well done Rutledge House Inn!
Large restored rooms on south borde of french district.
Had a wonderful stay at this historic B&B. Service was exceptional. Rooms were comfortable and clean. We enjoyed walking to everything and just relaxing!
Had an amazing experience. Would highly recommend. Great location right in the heart of the historic dsitrict. Staying here is a destination by itself. Will definitely come back next time. The service is so personalized and friendly and has an old world charm that is so rare in these times.
Really enjoyed my stay in this historic inn. It was outstanding in every way. John at the front desk greeted me every time I returned from sightseeing. Just a charming person. Staying at this inn really made the history of Charleston come alive. Wish I could have stayed longer!!
Hospitality at its absolute finest! The small details make a huge difference. You definitely feel like you’re in the upper echelon of society while staying there. Centrally located but yet you feel like you’re far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Tea time was a nice treat in the afternoon and breakfast options are the same as a diner.
If I had to choose one word to describe my stay at the John Rutledge House Inn, it would still be phenomenal — even after stays in New York, London, Budapest, and many other world-class destinations, nothing has topped the warmth, elegance, and exceptional service I received here.
From the moment I stepped into this stunning Georgian-style home, built before the American Revolution, I was greeted with genuine joy and care... especially from Nicole, who went above and beyond to make sure my stay was nothing short of perfect. Every member of the team radiated professionalism and kindness, and it made a lasting impression on me.
Maria, the chef, prepared the best poached eggs I’ve ever had. Nicole, made sure every gluten-free detail, from breakfast to Tea Time, was beautifully taken care of, which meant so much. The nightcap service — offering brandy, port, or sherry in the evening — added a beautiful, old-world charm to my evenings.
My room was spotless and dust-free, and the turndown service and housekeeping were consistently top-tier. This is the kind of care that’s hard to find — the kind that makes you feel truly looked after.
The location is also ideal: just a few short blocks to the waterfront and perfectly positioned to explore Charleston’s historic district entirely on foot.
Even after visiting world-renowned destinations, the John Rutledge House Inn remains the gold standard. It has honestly ruined me for other hotels — and I can’t wait to return.
