Great stop over in Gretna. Dog friendly hotel with walking area and gardens outside. Really good and spacious room. Enjoyed our time here.
Merely two weeks before my friend and I were due to stay, the owners cancelled our stay on Booking.com with no reason given. We have had this place booked since January so I don't know what has changed. A message to explain why and apologise would have gone a long way.
It also has cost us a fair chunk of money as having to rebook somewhere nearby in the height of summer with such short notice means options left are expensive.
A lack of consideration for customers!
Gone into administration yesterday. All bookings left high and dry. All staff made redundant.
DO NOT BOOK!!!
My son is currently £5k out of pocket with just 4 weeks until the wedding.
NOTHING has been said by the hotel to anyone with future bookings
We didn’t stay at the hotel just went for a meal at the restaurant
The staff were all really lovely, pleasant cheery and helpful.
However the food wasn’t so good. My husband ordered Chicken Supreme, supreme it wasn’t. What he was presented with was two pieces of grilled chicken on top of a plate of chips, a flat mushroom with a whole grilled tomato on top. Served with a small jug of gravy! My steak pie was slightly better but a plate of mixed veg with chips floating in gravy wasn’t exactly enticing. Fair to say it tasted better than it looked.
My partner and I stayed two nights over a wedding weekend. Although frantically busy the staff couldn’t have been more welcome , courteous and calm! And on Sunday morning when we were struggling to get a taxi they gave us a lift to Carlisle 10 miles away and wanted no money - though we gave some anyway! So different from faceless corporate hotels!
We chose this hotel for our wedding reception and for ourselves and our guests to stay for the duration after looking at and viewing some other hotels in the area, it's the only one in the area to allow dogs in the rooms and the restaurant, they also provided the dogs with water in the bar and restaurant and a breakfast sausage! Without the gables our guests with dogs would have had to stay in alternative accomodations away from us and had to either leave the dogs alone, board them in a strange place, or Pat for sitters, with the gables they were as much a part of the whole day as everyone else.
The staff are amazing, so friendly, kind, caring and cater for your every need, they make you feel welcome from the minute you walk through the door, the food is beautiful with huge portions!!
Our evening reception was relaxed and comfortable, as we didn't want the full traditional wedding reception, just a smaller room with background music so we could relax and just enjoy each other's company, they went out of their way to ensure we were well looked after and had everything we needed, again the food on the hot and cold buffet we decided on was amazing, so much that we all had more than enough choices.
We will most definitely be back again!
Stayed in the Gables hotel for 5 nights on a golf tour with 9 other guys.
Rooms were c.lean and tidy but very tired, wallpaper missing in corners or coming away from wall. Shower was disappointing, pressure not great. Good clean towels and plenty of space in bathroom. Rooms were made up if requested.
Food was well cooked and filling, although menu was very limited for a 5 night stay, with no specials. Breakfasts were very good with plenty ty of choices.
Bar was disappointing, limited choice of draft drinks, and they ran out 2 nights before we left with no replacements thus reducing choices even more.
Barman was very loud, difficult to understand and sometimes very(too) familiar with their guests.
Rest of the staff where very pleasant.
We had an excellent few nights stay here, to attend a wedding in gretna green. We found the hotel to be a great choice, within a few minutes of the wedding venue. The customer service was of a high standard from reception, bar, and restaurant staff at all times during our stay, even during a power cut, they ensured that we were OK and kept updated on the situation. The room was clean and well prepared, with a good-sized en-suite. The bed was very comfortable, which was definitely a positive. We had a meal on the first night and could not fault anything from the presentation, flavours, and amount of the food that was provided along with the interaction of the serving staff providing an overview of each item on the menu, which helped with the order. The breakfast available was a good start to the day with a great choice of options, but the Scottish breakfast was a must, ample portions of the items, cooked to perfection every time. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Gretna Green for a wedding or sightseeing, we were not disappointed with our choice.
A little hard to find, Google was about 100 meters short of location which is sheltered by some large trees out front, plenty of parking.
Huge twin room, large bathroom. Very clean.
Very friendly receptionist. Concierge assisted us with our bags.
We chose to eat in & our dinner was lovely.
Quiet spot even though accommodation was full. Only draw back was size of tv (tiny) given how big the room was.
We stayed here in October 2024 when we got married and had our reception here. We cannot recommend The Gables enough! The staff were so lovely and couldn't do enough for us, the food is delicious and the hotel has a lovely homely feel to it.
The location is lovely and quiet and there is plenty of shops within walking distance. There is a great selection of rooms and they are dog friendly!
Went to sort out Wedding plans at Gretna, as we've been before decided to stay at The Gables Hotel this time. Unfortunately doesn't have the same quality as other hotels we've stayed in. All staff we're lovely can't fault them.
The hotel looks rundown and unkept. We had 2 rooms both we're very old fashioned and had cobwebs on the ceiling
Small TV hanging off the wall in 1 room. Bathroom had dirty tiles.
Our friends had there Wedding there 20yrs ago and we're disappointed at how bad the place looks now.
Wouldn't stay there again.
In desperate need of a refurbishment. We stayed in the "family suite". Room 9. It was like a time capsule from 1995. Cobwebs in the door ways, upside down pictures on the wall, a brown thin carpet to hide the dirt and mattresses that when new in 1980 were no doubt comfy but now need a trip to tip matched with a headboard that had head shaped threadbare patched on each side. You have to compare every cheap hotel to a Premier Inn and this room, like so many tired UK hotels, just didn't feel worth the price. Just make an effort, decorate the room, replace the beds and clean.
The corridors has been decorated but then you would come across a threadbare random chair with foam on show through a huge tear..why? Just remove it or replace it! It's not hard.
Dinner menu hugely overpriced, restaurant empty and the general feeling of disrepair and lack of investment made you doubt the kitchen cleanliness.
Breakfast was good. The only + really. Close it, spend £££ or run it into the ground. Nit sure what this hotel's plan is.
We stopped at Gables Hotel for my daughters and Son in-laws wedding, on the 1st of Nov, we had their wedding reception in the beautiful Galloway Suite , after her getting married at the Anvil Hall .
We decorating the wedding room the night before the wedding our self's, the Manager Jorn stopped up with us helping till 2.30 in the morning bless him, he could not have been more friendly and helpful if he tried 😀, thank you Jorn .
Charlotte the wedding organiser, was spot on with her correspondence with emails and phone calls , covering every little concern we had , with the smallest problem to the very end, ie, the measurements of the tables as I was making the table garlands and curtains myself. Even down to the food choices , again thank you Charlotte 😊.
The buffet was fantastic, so much food choice, rooms wete lovely and clean, the wedding party were on the same ground floor near the wedding reception.
Also a big thank you to the bar staff Carl, and the ladies Nicolaon and Jane on reception they were so friendly , and all the staff that that worked so hard.
You even gave my daughter some chocolates and fiz on the morning of her getting ready for het wedding. Little touches like that makes a big difference.
Thank you to everyone, we will definitely stay at the Hotel again.
From Mr & Mrs Bryant & mother and Farther of the Bride .
We had a family wedding at the Gables, no wedding coordinator turned up, was told it was her day off, hardly any staff on the day, it was very unprofessional and not the wedding day the Bride and Groom paid in advance for. The hotel is very dated and would not recommend it to anybody.
Worst hotel we have EVER stayed in! Came for the weekend for a wedding. No hot water. Staff very unhelpful and very unprofessional. Waiter who was running the wedding tipped a full tray of Prosecco over the bride and bridesmaid! Food not edible at the wedding breakfast or evening meal. Told they were short staffed but didn’t see the manager until we complained when leaving. Owner and owners son very rude when complained to them!
The rooms are awful so dated and dirty. Very noisy, the fire doors are loud, you can hear when someone flushes the toilet in the room above.
Window didn’t shut and we were on the ground floor, view of over grown shrubs! Mould and dirt in the bathroom, cobwebs and dust everywhere.
DO NOT STAY HERE!
On arrival at the hotel very impressive on the outside, the room we had needed to be upgraded and cleaned properly drawers missing at bed side bathroom need to be replaced and also cleaned properly door was very dirty the photo I have put on is the presentation of the mike coffee etc not what you wound expect
The receptionist on arrival was very friendly and helpful as was the restaurant staff and food was good but the receptionist on in the morning was unfriendly and looked like she just got out of bed hair look still wet not a good impression to leave on
Their is a charge for our furry family don’t know why as nothing except bowls were in the room most people travelling with dogs would have there own bowls
This was a wedding the worst experience I have ever had arrived no hot water in wedding party's room ....no rooms ready for the wedding Barman dropped full tray of wine all over the bride... the food for the reception and evening meal uneatable
Lovely stay.friendly staff.relaxing
Was box of milk tray and wine left in room i think as it was my anniversary.lovely gesture
Beautiful looking hotel, was staying as attending a wedding nearby.. lovely, very welcoming and polite staff, clean n tidy hotel , though could do with updating rooms ..they were exceptionally clean and comfortable with ample car parking
We booked this hotel for one night on our way to the Highlands. The only thing that I would rate highly here is the staff friendliness, otherwise absolutely terrible place! Our superior quadruple room was worse than any hostel around the world I have ever stayed at. It was incredibly dated, bathroom smelled badly of urine, it wasn't clean, floor in the bathroom wasn't even mopped, we found human hair ( and body hair) over the bathroom floor, toilet, in the bath, everything was stained, dirty and sooo grubby, genuinely an awful room for the money! We tried to find some alternative accommodation locally at the last minute, but nothing was available. We also had our return journey booked there, but we cancelled it immediately and booked another hotel instead, as it just was that awful. For almost £200 per night, this was just shocking, shocking standard. When I went through the reviews, I noticed the family room has had the same feedback in the past, with people refusing to even stay there, unfortunately I didn't do my homework well enough to read through all the reviews, instead I just looked at a few recent ones. The staff there was very pleasant and apologetic, they are genuinely the only good thing about the place.
