What a great hotel! I loved the check in and Angelica took great care of me. She made me feel welcome and was fast and efficient. I didn't get to meet the maintenance team but my hat is off to them. They keep this 100+ year old hotel (that's what I was told when I asked) in great shape. Everything in my room was well cared for and in working order. That isn't always easy in older hotels. I didn't get to try the restaurant because it was a quick stay but breakfast looked like they were busy. Loved my stay and this would be my choice if I am back in the area.
The staff was fantastic
Feasibly the worst bed I've slept in. The windows don't keep any sound out. Felt like I was outside.
Alles war traumhaft das Frühstück und das Bett waren das beste
Breakfast was delicious. Cleanliness of the room and everything functioned as expected.
Valet did take a while and I was checked out when I planned on returning same day. I also didn't like that upon checking in, I was not advised that there would be $100 hold per day on the card for incidentals. Also, I almost got charged for valet parking when I was advised upon check in that it would be comped throughout my stay when I sign up as a Bonvoy member for the first time. Also the hotel was a little loud at night from being on the main street.
Absolutely loved staying here! It's a short walking distance to the convention center, it's a beautiful hotel, and the restaurant The Grange is lovely to sit in in the early morning to eat the delicious food. As a Marriott Platinum member, I love how this hotel offers you two free entrees daily at their restaurant. Really good service. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean, and the location is in a good place.
Downsides I experience, but which would not affect me returning to this hotel: If you're a big guy like me, the toilet seat is something to consider. It's one of those old toilets with a circle seat and not an elongated seat so be ready for awkward bathroom visits. There is only valet parking for this hotel and it can be easy to miss where to bring your car in if you've never been to the Citizen before and don't know where valet is. These criticisms are mostly for myself to remember in the future when I should return to this hotel, but overall it is an excellent hotel and I had a great stay.
The holtel and staff were great
The location is not great.Area seems sketchy.
Valet needs more assistance and line was long.
Stunning
The food in the restaurant is very good. Atmosphere, decor and history of the hotel is what we love about the hotel. Plus some great views too from the upper floors.
We've stayed twice and have had a great experience. The bathroom pocket door on one of the higher corner rooms was a little off and could use a little maintenance to work better.
The property was extremely clean and had a sweat aroma almost like a bakery.
What I like most about the property was the service and the attention to detail in the decor.
I have been booking rooms at The Citizen Hotel (Autograph Collection) almost every single week for the past year—easily 52+ nights annually—for high-profile celebrity clients. That consistent, high-volume business ends today because of one front desk agent’s complete unwillingness to help.
On December 14, 2025, my client arrived to check in but had lost his wallet and couldn’t present a physical card for incidentals. I immediately called the desk and offered to provide a credit card authorization form (standard practice in the industry). Agent Anissa flatly refused, citing “policy” for third-party bookings. When I asked her to simply cancel the existing non-refundable reservation so I could rebook directly and handle payment myself, she again refused and told me to contact Expedia/Hotels.com—even though Expedia confirmed the hotel has full authority to cancel or modify.
Because of Anissa’s rigid, unhelpful stance, I was forced to book and pay for a second room that same night for the same guest. I lost an entire unnecessary room night due to her lack of flexibility and poor customer service.
I escalated the issue to management (Antonio Sifuentes, Director of Rooms), who apologized but offered no refund or meaningful resolution—only the suggestion to book directly in the future. That does nothing to address the immediate financial loss caused by their staff.
As a result, I have canceled all remaining reservations for the rest of the year (including this weekend) and will no longer book at The Citizen Hotel or any other Autograph Collection property. You’ve permanently lost a guest who was bringing you guaranteed revenue of at least 52 nights per year, if not more.
There are plenty of hotels in Sacramento that understand hospitality means working with loyal guests in reasonable situations. The Citizen Hotel clearly does not. Save yourself the frustration—stay elsewhere.
