Not as good as we hoped
Pros:

Sunday lunch was very nice food, but overpriced we felt. The biggest issue for us was the service. Waitresses were very friendly, but service was very slow. Waited a long time for drinks, an hour between placing our order and main courses appearing. In the meantime tables around us were being served with the same dishes we had ordered. 2 of our table had a starter but it was only soup and houmous. Had we not had those we would have left.
No apology was offered from the staff for the wait. When we asked if we had been forgotten the waitress simply said "it being plated up now". Our order had clearly been forgotten! I dont mind when mistakes happen - noone is perfect - but please own up and apologise!

Restaurant is a cut above the rest.
Pros:

A weekend stay at the Royal Hotel, the room was a clean double of a good standard, however the highlight was the restaurant. Enjoyed our first night meal so much that we booked to eat there the second night as well, and it didn't disappoint. The food exceeded our expectations and I would recommend eating at the Royal Hotel to all. They keep a very good pint too.
Plentiful parking and very pleasant staff. Hotel is well placed for beach walks or along the canal directly behind.

Cons:

The room, although clean and comfortable enough, would have felt more welcoming with a few pictures on the walls, e.g. of local scenes. A minor quibble.

Disappointed like my term customer.
Pros:

After decades of eating and staying at The Royal, myself and my grandaughter have just been abruptly turned away from here after declining to take a 2 seater table because it was next to the main entrance to the pub where the door is in constant use in cold weather. Other larger tables were empty but we were told that they were full. I would have liked to have been offered a wait for a free table but was not. Really disappointed and upset as we have travelled quite a long way today and also have a lot of history here.

Good pub, great staff, unfortunately the accommodation felt like more of an afterthought.
Pros:

Great staff, very courteous and welcoming. The pub itself was great with a large menu and the food was lovely if a little pricey,

Cons:

The bed was a little on the small side. The room got really hot during the night even with the radiator turned right down. We had to open the window to keep the room at a comfortable temperature which then meant you were kept awake by the road noise. The bathroom could really do with a shelf to put your bathroom accessories on, there wasn't a lot of space. The room had a fan heater in the wardrobe which was so full of dust/fluff you wouldn't want to turn it on, not nice. We stayed for two nights and the room was not serviced during our stay, for the price I personally would have expected it to be.

Lovely food
Pros:

Our food was absolutely delicious and good size portions too. It’s on the pricier side but I felt it was worth the cost! Inside the pub has clearly had a lot of love put into it, it’s lovely. The car park change was no issue as we were clearly directed to the tablet to input our registration.

Our only gripe was the service. When food was brought it was placed on the table randomly, rather than checking who had ordered which meal. The waitress then left before we could ask for any sauce etc. When one of our party asked a passing waiter for another drink they walked off before anyone else could order another. Finally, when we finished we were asked if we wanted puddings and when we said no we were instantly presented with the bill - it very much felt as though we were being pushed out the door!

That said I would go back again as the food was lovely, but I do think service could be improved.
