The location
The carpet wasn’t that clean, maybe it needs to be changed or just tiles are fine
Great value for money, clean and comfortable.
Location staff
Using fire escape to enter and leave property before 9am and 10.30 pm.
Room needs refreshing decor tired . Heating on a timer not always on when required . I was in room 1 fan noice or air con when bar open .
Nice pub, decent food.
Dated room, no cash accepted at the bar, pricey breakfast if you wanted the full English.
Sunday lunch was very nice food, but overpriced we felt. The biggest issue for us was the service. Waitresses were very friendly, but service was very slow. Waited a long time for drinks, an hour between placing our order and main courses appearing. In the meantime tables around us were being served with the same dishes we had ordered. 2 of our table had a starter but it was only soup and houmous. Had we not had those we would have left.
No apology was offered from the staff for the wait. When we asked if we had been forgotten the waitress simply said "it being plated up now". Our order had clearly been forgotten! I dont mind when mistakes happen - noone is perfect - but please own up and apologise!
A weekend stay at the Royal Hotel, the room was a clean double of a good standard, however the highlight was the restaurant. Enjoyed our first night meal so much that we booked to eat there the second night as well, and it didn't disappoint. The food exceeded our expectations and I would recommend eating at the Royal Hotel to all. They keep a very good pint too.
Plentiful parking and very pleasant staff. Hotel is well placed for beach walks or along the canal directly behind.
The room, although clean and comfortable enough, would have felt more welcoming with a few pictures on the walls, e.g. of local scenes. A minor quibble.
Breakfast and dinner were very good. Spirits and mixers were a little pricey.
Nothing really
After decades of eating and staying at The Royal, myself and my grandaughter have just been abruptly turned away from here after declining to take a 2 seater table because it was next to the main entrance to the pub where the door is in constant use in cold weather. Other larger tables were empty but we were told that they were full. I would have liked to have been offered a wait for a free table but was not. Really disappointed and upset as we have travelled quite a long way today and also have a lot of history here.
Clean pleasant and well run. Friendly staff.
Good restaurant and good choice breakfast
Difficult to open window for fresh air. Broken sash cord. During rush hours traffic noise very intrusive but reasonably quiet overnight,
The rooms were clean and comfortable breakfast and dinner menu good with good staff serving.
During our stay the heating was not on and the weather had just changed to cold, bedside light bulbs not functioning.
Nice place to spend a few days
Bar Restaurant area was busy with a good atmosphere. The food and service was excellent. The place has obviously been revamped since my last visit (which was several years ago.
room very clean
bedside light did not work,
Convenient, clean and comfortable with easy access to good restaurant food. Nice easy stopover for tired travelers on the road.
Great staff, very courteous and welcoming. The pub itself was great with a large menu and the food was lovely if a little pricey,
The bed was a little on the small side. The room got really hot during the night even with the radiator turned right down. We had to open the window to keep the room at a comfortable temperature which then meant you were kept awake by the road noise. The bathroom could really do with a shelf to put your bathroom accessories on, there wasn't a lot of space. The room had a fan heater in the wardrobe which was so full of dust/fluff you wouldn't want to turn it on, not nice. We stayed for two nights and the room was not serviced during our stay, for the price I personally would have expected it to be.
Our food was absolutely delicious and good size portions too. It’s on the pricier side but I felt it was worth the cost! Inside the pub has clearly had a lot of love put into it, it’s lovely. The car park change was no issue as we were clearly directed to the tablet to input our registration.
Our only gripe was the service. When food was brought it was placed on the table randomly, rather than checking who had ordered which meal. The waitress then left before we could ask for any sauce etc. When one of our party asked a passing waiter for another drink they walked off before anyone else could order another. Finally, when we finished we were asked if we wanted puddings and when we said no we were instantly presented with the bill - it very much felt as though we were being pushed out the door!
That said I would go back again as the food was lovely, but I do think service could be improved.
Location and service
Noise of the traffic outside my room. However, this would not stop me from booking this hotel again.
