Some places just get it — and Timber Cove Resort is one of them.
The views alone are worth the drive up the Sonoma Coast. From the moment you step onto the property, the Pacific stretches endlessly before you — crashing, dramatic, humbling. Whether you're watching the fog roll in at dusk or catching a rare golden sunset, you'll find yourself reaching for your camera every ten minutes and then putting it down because no photo does it justice.
What makes Timber Cove special, though, is that it doesn't try to be something it's not. The older building carries that wonderful mid-century coastal lodge energy — all warm wood, stone, and character that no new-build can manufacture. And then there's the record player. A record player. Spinning in the room like it's 1971 and the world is gloriously unhurried. It's a small touch that somehow says everything about the philosophy of the place: slow down, listen, be here.
The people at Timber Cove are the hidden gem. Genuinely warm, not performatively so. They remembered our names. They gave us recommendations that actually reflected what we wanted, not just the talking points. That human touch is rarer than it should be in hospitality.
We capped the trip with a hike at nearby Fort Ross State Historic Park — a short, beautiful drive away — and it was the perfect companion to the Timber Cove experience. The trails are peaceful and uncrowded, the coastal bluffs centering in a way that's hard to put into words. History, wildness, quiet. We came back to the resort feeling like better versions of ourselves.
If you want luxury that feels earned rather than curated, views that recalibrate your sense of scale, and people who treat you like a guest rather than a transaction — this is your place.
— Will absolutely return.
We loved our stay at Timber Cove. The scenery is stunning and the hotel is very unique and cool. Our ocean view room was lovely with a skylight to see the stars and a beautiful balcony overlooking the ocean.
Beautiful location, nice rooms however I’ve staid at nicer and more accommodating and functional.
Don’t bother with the in room phonograph, it does work but it doesn’t do vinyl any favors. The heater didn’t work, although I did call and they would send up maintenance but by that time I was already getting ready to leave, this should’ve been tested and functioning. Bring your own charging devices, not one USB port in the room, very frustrating for the price point. They do provide an In room safe, beverages, options to purchase bottles of adult indulgences. Bed was okay, pillows were awful, huge and fluffy, my sleep wasn’t too well.
It is a beautiful location just a long way to get to for a not so extraordinary stay.
This place is special. Quiet and beautiful. Food is good, drink selection is good. The ocean view is so calming and enjoyable. We will be back.
We have visited this resort a few times. Its always a wonderful getaway. Beautiful views, comfortable rooms, great service and good food. Very relaxing and every time we leave, we know we are coming back.
Hotel grounds are amazing. Can't beet the views. The building was great. The staff was friendly. The food was just good, not great
Very beautiful! This place is perfect for slow days and enjoying some peace and quiet. We had a beautiful view from our room and a cozy fireplace. We stayed on the premises for all 3 days and enjoyed the afternoon homemade cookies, games, and the beautiful common area with bar/fireplace. It was the perfect spot for a few days away from city life. Would definitely return!
Timber Cove is a cozy spot with an unbelievable setting perched above the Pacific Ocean. It somehow seems both luxurious and unpretentious at the same time. The rooms are fairly basic - but modern, clean and cozy. It's fun to listen to random records you can choose from. We drove our EV, but unfortunately people hogged the EV chargers for our entire stay and we didn't get to charge which was a bummer. The food at the Coastal Kitchen was fantastic. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. It was very crowded likely due to Valentine's Day/long weekend - so maybe it's usually better? We loved enjoying the fire in the evening and playing scrabble. The grounds are expansive and worth hiking around. Be sure to check out the Salt Point State Park nearby and walk along the coast. We saw >10 seals playing around in the water. They were watching us as much as we were watching them! Unforgettable experience! I would love to come back during different seasons. It was cold/rainy during our stay, but that made it even more cozy and relaxing.
While we enjoyed the property, the housekeeping service did not meet the expectations set by the premium room rate on a holiday weekend--$1K for the first night.
After requesting service on our second night, we found the kitchen trash hadn't been emptied, tea and toilet paper weren't replenished, and bath mats were missing. I eventually had to call housekeeping myself to resolve the trash and TP issues. Additionally, an early request for extra bedding for our 3rd person was delayed by ~90 minutes and my specific instructions (to just drop off the linens) were disregarded by the staff.
As a guest, I shouldn't have to follow up multiple times for basic maintenance. Hopefully, the Timber Cove team improves the coordination between the front desk and housekeeping.
The location is gorgeous. Everything else is basically a La Quinta with a view and the price tag of a Ritz Carlton. Do not do it.
This is a true destination! Location and resort and incredible and relaxing. Food in Coast Kitchen was amazing, as were all of the servers. If you are looking for some place special to "recharge your soul" this is the place for you!
Timber Cove Hotel is absolutely gorgeous. We loved the indoor and outdoor games, the fire pits, access to beautiful coastal trails, and the spa amenities .It’s an ideal place to relax and unplug. The service was flawless, and the staff was genuinely warm and welcoming throughout our stay. The only downside was the restaurant: given the overall caliber of the property, we expected a higher-end food experience. That said, it’s still a fantastic destination and we’d happily return.
While the facility was amazing, our trip was ruined by an atrocious meal in the restaurant. I convinced my family to stay and dine at TC, I was embarrassed by the level of service and fool quality. Strong letters to follow..
It was my second stay at this lovely location, and no doubt I’ll return again. January on the Northern California coast can be rainy or shrouded in fog, and even if that was the case, I’m pretty sure it would still be perfection. But lucky us, we were guests while the sun was shining and we were blessed by 64° days.
Rooms are snug, but super comfortable, many with oceanfront views, and a tiny porch in which you could easily lose an entire afternoon, simply sitting. The hotel offers fun options for simply enjoying some hygge. Record players, numerous board games, foosball and Friday night s’mores. The firepit by the ocean is lit at dusk and a new wellness room with wave chairs and sauna/ cold plunge overlooking the ocean, is a unique way for an hour yo disappear.
We were lucky to get a guided Saturday morning tour along the cliffs with local Hank, who lived in Russia and Mongolia but now calls the Sonoma Coast home. He’s a history buff who knows everything about the flora and fauna from coyote brush and ice plants, to the bohemian trysts of Timber Cove past- including the wild reputation of the famed obelisk artist, Benny Buffini.
It’s as if time froze on this epic patch of the coast, with no new development cookie cutter ugliness, and you can almost imagine the Pomo and Miwok still living there, in their native territory, thousands of years later.
There are plenty of options for coastal and forested hiking trails or back road drives (with white knuckle roller coaster blind curves and a view of the Pacific where you will catch your breath) . A visit to the historic Fort Ross, a former Russian encampment, beautifully preserved and nostalgia heavy, means there is no shortage of things to do should you feel like pulling away from your record player and fireplace. Add a lovely, local staff who remind you to take it slow, make this place an ideal escape for the overworked, low HRV city folk desperate for respite. In other words, us.
Summer is high season, but I’d recommend pulling up in the off months where the stillness, stars and crashing waves feel like they’re performing just for you.
We had booked it for our anniversary and received a nice card and champagne in our room upon arrival, and that was so sweet. The bed was comfy though the pillows could be a little better … but all in all a really great experience. Enjoyed the live music and accommodations. The fitness center and the wellness spa was the one that we really felt was sooooo amazing. Thank you team timber cove!
Just a mid-week getaway to decompress, taking in some nature and relaxing. I took my almost one year old puppy along for a hiking companion and we had such a good time. Timber Cove has an amazing location, where the redwoods meet the ocean. Just exploring the grounds kept us busy for a day, climbing over the boulders and taking in the excellent views of the ocean. A really cool piece of art is the centerpiece of the property, a 60 foot tall obelisk that must been seen sits on the tallest ground and watches over everything. The next day we ventured out exploring the coast to the north. Picturesque Highway One is worthy in any direction, we went north and weren’t disappointed.
The staff and facilities were all first rate. A cozy, comfy great room is next to the bar. Excellent menu. Everything I tried was really good.
I will definitely return to further explore the coast and enjoy a really great resort.
I was charged by Timber Cove Resort for a reservation I did not make. I contacted the resort immediately after seeing the charge to explain the error and request a correction. Despite reaching out right away, the resort continued to process and keep the charge.
This experience raised serious concerns about their billing practices and customer service responsiveness. When a guest reports an unauthorized charge promptly, the expectation is a timely investigation and resolution. That did not happen here.
I would advise others to monitor their credit card statements closely if booking or interacting with this property and to proceed with caution.
My wife and I spent the night for our wedding anniversary. The lodge is a beautiful, rustic space that we enjoy very much. The staff is always great, the the restaurant is always good. I also like the large bar set in the middle of the main lodge with the large fireplace burning at one end. As an oceanfront getaway Timber Cove Lodge is hard to beat. Fantastic setting on the edge of the rocky Pacific coast.
Great place to stay on the Sonoma Coast. Yummy food and wine in the Coast Kitchen restaurant in the inn. Quiet and peaceful. Lots of beautiful places to hike nearby. Nice lounge/bar to hang out and listen to music and play games. Comfy beds and majestic views.
My husband booked Timber Cove for our 10th anniversary and my birthday. Due to traffic, we arrived later than planned but called ahead and booked a spa appointment for noon. At check-in, we upgraded our room after being shown two options. We noted an elevator next to the room and were assured it was rarely used; unfortunately, it was extremely loud. We later realized the kitchen was directly below us, and dishes could be heard throughout the evening. While frustrating, we were exhausted and chose not to complain.
Dinner that night at the restaurant was excellent and truly the highlight of our stay.
The next morning, when we stopped by the front desk to ask for directions to the spa, we were told we had no reservation and that nothing could be done. We have a call log confirming the booking, but since it was made by phone, we had no written confirmation. The front desk appeared polite on the surface but showed little genuine concern or effort to resolve the issue, despite this being the main reason for our visit.
They offered 50% off the spa the following day, which was not possible since we were checking out. After further discussion, the only resolution offered was a complimentary breakfast, which felt inadequate after spending nearly $2,000 on a two-night anniversary stay. A manager never came to speak with us, and despite multiple follow-up emails, we have yet to hear back from the manager.
We regularly stay at high-end properties and understand premium pricing when service reflects it. Unfortunately, the service felt performative rather than sincere, and the lack of care, communication, and accountability left us disappointed. For a milestone anniversary, we expected far better guest recovery and attention
