Booking.Com is doing a shoddy job of actually checking hotel rooms themselves.

The strongest aspect of this hotel is undoubtedly its location. Vieux Carré is very close to the Vieux-Port area, which is the lively heart of Marseille. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés, shops, and attractions within walking distance, and the atmosphere around the port is energetic and enjoyable. The exterior appearance of the hotel is nice.

Unfortunately, the experience inside the hotel was disappointing. There is no proper reception or check-in area; instead, two women with laptops handled check-in in a very makeshift manner. There is essentially no welcoming lobby or comfortable sitting space for guests.

We were given what was supposedly one of the hotel’s larger rooms, but at only 15 square meters (about 170 square feet), the room felt extremely cramped. There was barely enough space to open suitcases beside the bed. The bathroom was equally tiny and uncomfortable to use. The hallways were narrow, dimly lit, and rather dingy, giving the interior an overall unappealing atmosphere.

The breakfast was average at best, standard basic European/French breakfast without anything memorable.

I would not choose to stay at this hotel again. I also think Booking.com should provide clearer descriptions regarding room sizes. Simply listing square meters can be misleading for international travelers; it would help to indicate when rooms are considered “very small” by typical hotel standards.

Finally, I was genuinely surprised by some of the extremely glowing previous reviews. Either my experience was very different, or some reviewers tend to give overly positive ratings to every property they visit. More realistic and balanced reviews would be far more helpful for future travelers

Pros:

Le personnel était sympatique et aux petits soins. Le petit déjeuner était varié avec des produits frais. L’hôtel est bien situé et sécurisé.

Cons:

Je voyagais avec ma fille de 14 ans et j’ai donc fait une réservation booking en mentionnant son âge. Le gérant m’a accusée d’avoir triché et réservé pour un enfant de 10 ans et donc de ne pas avoir payé pour elle. Il était agressif et hautain sans raison... et je rajoutera incompétent vu ses accusations non fondées.

Nice hotel.
Pros:

Nice selection of breakfast food. Friendly staff that could communicate with us in English since our French is very weak.
Wonderful location at Vieux Port.
Room is typical size you find in older European hotels. Very well maintained and clean.

Cons:

Our hair dryer didn’t work at all. We reported it at front desk and they said they would get it fixed. When it was not fixed, they provided a loaner. This was necessary both days of our stay.

Great location for short stays in Marseille
Pros:

Great location right next to the Old Port - ideal for exploring Marseille on foot in every direction (cathedral, churches, museums, restaurants, shops, port, palaces, forts, etc.). The breakfast buffet had a strong selection with good coffee from the machine, and the staff were always professional, friendly, smiling, and welcoming. The entrance area also makes a solid first impression: bright, colourful, and inviting.

Overall, a good, well-located option with strong service, but the rooms could use some updating and better insulation.

Cons:

The room itself is fine for a short stay but on the smaller side. Décor feels a bit dated and shows some wear, so a refresh would help. Soundproofing is also an issue - noise from the corridor carries quite clearly, which can be disruptive.
