Arrival:
We arrived late at night, and luckily, no one else was in the booking-in queue, as this takes approximately ten minutes per family. The problem being I think, is due to the latest technological booking system (You can’t beat good old pen and paper instead of a tablet). Imagine a coachload of guests booking in at once. This occurs frequently, with queues extending beyond the entrance door.
Rooms:
Rooms are very basic and could do with a facelift. No kettle is available on the all-inclusive, but if you upgrade to “all-inclusive premium”, then you will get a kettle and a fridge. (This information is via word of mouth from other guests and should be confirmed with the hotel reception.) Beds are two singles pushed together, and blankets are located in the wardrobes if you are situated in one of the more shaded rooms of the hotel.
Noise:
The hotel can get noisy at times. Especially if your room is on the first floor above the bar, as the sound of drunken revellers carries up the stairs. Our room was opposite the showroom, and we could hear the live music from the bar every night from 9:30 pm until closing. This didn’t bother us too much, but if you want a quieter room, then I suggest you ask to be located on another level.
Seating:
The weather in February was unpredictable, with strong winds and rain occurring at times. Insufficient seating exists for every guest when the weather dictates gathering between the indoor bar and reception area. (The management may want to consider opening the showroom bar during these difficult times. Especially in the daytime.)
Food:
The all-inclusive selection of meat and fish always proved ample and was always hot. (Nothing to complain about here.)
Pool area:
When the days are hotter, the sunbeds are quickly occupied, but several upper-level terraces in the area are available. And then there are seats and tables around the pool bar. A snack bar is also situated adjacent to the pool bar, which offers food most of the day.
Location:
While two supermarkets exist locally, adjacent shops are absent. A bus stop, positioned fifty meters from the hotel, provides transport to the neighbouring town of Candelária. Or if you wish to go further afield, you can get a bus to Santa Cruz for €1.80. if you don’t mind walking, the Candelária is approximately a 2-mile walk, which is mainly on the flat with some moderate hills involved. There are also several small bays to walk to in the local area. If you turn left out of the hotel and walk up Cardiac Hill, then there is a McDonald's at the top of the hill, but if you head in the other direction, there is a Brit bar just down the road. (Although I think this may be run by local people.)
Friendly atmosphere:
Receptionists, bar staff, cleaners, restaurant personnel—every staff member displays exceptional friendliness.
Summing up:
There are a lot of negative reviews of the hotel, but we never saw any negativity during our 11-night stay. Certainly, the hotel requires a significant facelift; this could occur progressively, floor by floor, during ongoing construction. The hotel itself is in a quiet location, but within walking distance to other local areas, or for those with limited mobility, there is a good local bus service that runs every 20 minutes in both directions.
We have scored 4 stars due to the noise issues, otherwise the hotel would have been perfect for our needs.
We stayed at Hotel Punta del Rey for two nights.
The assigned room showed clear signs of poor maintenance, including damaged woodwork, a visibly dirty air-conditioning unit, and deteriorated bathroom furniture.
We reported these issues to the hotel during our stay and documented them with photographs.
An upgrade to a premium all-inclusive room was offered, but given our short stay and travel preferences, this did not address the deficiencies of the originally booked room.
Guests should be aware of these potential issues.
