This hotel’s proximity to the city’s main train station is enough, all on its own, to rank it as the top choice for a Bayreuth stay. Situated right across the street from the Hauptbahnhof, it could hardly be closer unless it were physically inside the station. Moreover, the main Bayreuth post office is situated just a block away, making it easy for a traveller lodging here to ship home souvenir parcels without having to lug them across town. I booked the suite and found it to be worth every penny — and in fact, quite reasonably priced for what one gets: a spacious bedroom larger than entire guest units in other hotels, a luxurious bathroom featuring both a shower and a hot tub, a generous living space complete with sofa and easy chairs, and, in a solarium-like dormer suffused with daylight, an expansive table that doubles as a desk upon which a guest can comfortably lay out all of his books, maps, pamphlets, and souvenirs. While the suite’s living area is tiled, the bedroom is thankfully outfitted with wall-to-wall carpeting, making for a cozy, welcoming environment. Bayreuth was quite warm during my July stay, but the unit’s robust air-conditioning system kept the suite at a perfect temperature. Better still, the bedroom and living area have separate thermostats, allowing a guest to create, say, a cooler climate for sleeping and retain warmer conditions in the living area. Breakfast at the Bayerischer Hof features all of the options that one might expect from a hotel of this superlative quality, including scrambled eggs, bacon, and Nürnberg-style sausages. When I arrived, I was granted an early check in (the most desirable perk that a hotel can offer), and throughout my stay, the affable front-desk clerk answered every question I had with limitless patience and a warm spirit. Staying at the Bayerischer Hof made my four days in Bayreuth a wonderful experience, and I recommend it highly to anyone intending to visit the storied city of Wilhelmine and Wagner.
Although I loved the Bayerischer Hof and felt like it was a true home away from hone, the hotel’s 7 AM breakfast time is rather late (most hotels begin Frühstück at 6:30, some even from 6 AM, which allows one to get a head start on one’s day and catch early trains for day trips). Shifting breakfast back a half hour, at least in the summer months, would be a significant improvement. In my room, the temperature of the hot water was a bit irregular, and the shower hose required careful manipulation to avoid cutting off the water pressure, due to a kink in the tube. And while this lodging does provide lightning-fast same-day laundry, I found the execution to be inferior to the cleaning quality achieved by laundry services in other hotels. But these are very minor notes; the Hotel Bayerischer Hof is absolutely the top accommodation choice in Bayreuth, and should I ever return to this beautiful Bavarian city, which I would dearly love to do, I wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else.
Very close to the opera festival
Room was a bit small and I banged my had badly getting around to the bed on a jagged shelf sticking out from the wardrobe.
