This family run boutique hotel was like staying with friends. They helped us solve several travel problems and treated us like friends. Helpful, pleasant and informative. We had a very unique and exquisite dinner from their cucina and delicious morning breakfasts in their garden dining area on the lake front. I would highly recommend this comfortable and charming hotel.
This is a beautiful hotel boutique with the best staff ever.
The views from the room are gorgeous and the nice little garden over the lake where the restaurant is located has such a nice view. The hotel has also access to the lake, in case you want to swim, when the weather is good.
The bus stop is right outside at the hotel and the ferry to go to Bellagio is walking distance.
The family who owns will make sure to make you feel at home. The breakfast and meals are good, authentic Italian home made food.
Wonderful stay at this family owned property. Giuseppe and his family were exceptionally good to us. Wewould stay tgere afain and again. .
Nice family runned hotel with a good breakfast, very nice staff who really help their guests and a good restaurant as well.
Very pleasant stay during a few days at lake Como.
The rooms gives you all the comfort you need and may expect from a 3* hotel.
We’ve been travelling for several weeks as a little family with our 5 month old baby and have stayed in a handful of hotels across multiple countries but few will stay in our memories and hearts as much as this little gem.
What can I say about Giacomo, our host and his wonderful family… and it truly is a family run business with his sister, and parents all involved in the day to day running of the hotel. From the moment we arrived, the welcome, service and hospitality extended to us was beyond 5 star.
Due to booking our trip relatively late, we unfortunately missed out on a lakefront room which was a pity. However, our room was very comfortable and suited our needs perfectly as a haven to retreat to after busy days on to go exploring. The furniture and style has a very nostalgic feeling and reminded me of my own Grandmother’s home. The shower was great and the cold air conditioning were very welcome in the July heat.
Breakfast was included in our room rate and suited our needs for a light meal - the scrambled eggs to order were great and the cake was delicious. It was lovely to eat out on the shaded terrace overlooking the lake in the early mornings.
The hotel is really ideally situated a 5 minute walk to the Griante/Caddenabia ferry stop and we did all exploring by foot and ferry. It’s a 10 min trip across the lake to Bellagio which we did multiple times. We also took the hydrofoil down to Como and also travelled to Varenna which was my personal favourite. Walking distance to to Tremezzo and Villa Carlotta. We didn’t venture left of the hotel towards Menaggio but also close by. We didn’t eat dinner at the hotel but there are several places within a 5-15 minute stroll to grab lunch or dinner (turn right coming out of the hotel) and we especially liked Bar Vittoria 1894 which was a 10 min/800m walk and had a casual dinner there 2 evenings in a row.
Although there is not private parking, we managed to secure a space directly in front of the hotel (there are about 8 spaces) and Giacomo provided a permit so we did not have to pay so it was perfect.
Giacomo was a fantastic host with excellent English and conversing with him to get his recommendations on where to go and what to do was a pleasure. He couldn’t do enough for us to ensure we had a memorable stay.
A special note of thanks. On our second last day, we left our baby carrier on a ferry. Marta made several phone calls and sent an email to assist in contacting lost and found for us. When we returned to the hotel at the end of the day, Giacomo’s wonderful Mum had gone down to the office at Tremezzo to collect it and brought it back to be at the hotel waiting for us. This unexpected helpfulness and kindness was completely over and above and it really touched us. But that’s the type of beautiful, generous family that own and run “La Marianna”. You wouldn’t receive this assistance at a 5 star hotel in my opinion.
Do yourself a favour and forget the big soulless hotels in Lake Como where you could be anywhere in the world, and take a chance on this wonderful little charming place. You won’t regret it
Arrived at the hotel to be met by the wonderful host Giacomo. The very pretty terrace, albeit across the road was an oasis for drinks and breakfast looking out over the lake. The breakfast was served with a smile and hearty enough with fruit, yoghurts, breads, cake and eggs, best scrambled eggs I’ve had in a while. Coffee always on the go, made to order, not a pot just sat there.
Whilst the hotel is in no way modern, it is is rustic charm and Giacomo that made this place a treat to stay.
Thank you so much for your welcome Giacomo and of course Mum.
We absolutely loved our stay!! The food was fabulous and the service was even better. We loved Giacomo — he had the best Rec’s and truly made you feel like an insider to the city. We practically boasted about staying at La Marianna when going abouts Como! The breakfast is a real treat — with a terrace right one the water and eggs, bread and cake all whipped up that morning. We were so sad to leave the place and will recommend it over and over again!
We had a wonderful stay.Fabulous position.Very friendly atmosphere. Food was exceptional. The owners made us feel like members of the family
Staff was outstanding. Family was warm, inviting, and accommodating. Location was ideal with wonderful views. Restaurant (breakfasts and dinner) were excellent. Highly recommended!
Beautiful location. Very nice staff.
The facility is modest. However, the location is fantastic, the hosts are warm, friendly, accommodating and very helpful. My husband and I, as well as the friends we travelled with, loved the whole experience.
Thank you to Giacomo and his mom and dad for making our stay so memorable! We were greeted with a smile, enthusiasm and genuine interest and were well looked after for our two night stay. Charming, simple and eclectic! Our fixed menu dinner the first night let us know how seriously they look at food and hospitality in the northern Italian tradition. Sitting at the lakeside terrace for breakfast in the middle of October was a treat. Giacomo is a hotelier, tour guide, historian and was full of stories and interest. Everyone has to tackle the climb to the Sanctuario San Martino starting just steps from the hotel entrance. Best view in Italy!
This lovely hotel has all you could want. It may be only 3*, but there is 5* service here, and food more tasty and original than you would get in many 5* establishments. Also 5* friendliness in this great location, with a sheltered dining terrace right on the lake. Our lovely room with a balcony overlooking the lake was very comfortable with plenty of shelves & cupboards in both the bedroom and bathroom - something so often missing in other hotels. This is a real family run hotel - where all the family are very hands on. Bus stop right outside and ferry pier just 5 mins walk away. In the past we've stayed in Varenna, but we will always go back to La Marriana when we next go back to Como.
This was exactly what I was looking for when we decided to stay in the Lake Como area for 4 nights. A small family run hotel where the owners are on site ready to help you explore and understand the area. A place that is not in the center of the crowds but has easy access to everywhere we needed to go and see. The hotel has eight rooms. We stayed in one of the back rooms with a small terrace. We had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. From the moment we checked in until the time we left the owners were always available to help us. Breakfast is served on the terrace located across the street directly on the lake. We loved waking up and being right on the lake. They put out a large buffet with homemade baked goods, cereals, bread, yogurts, juices, fresh fruit, etc. After helping ourselves we were asked if we would like eggs and they were made just as we requested with ham and cheese. We asked for ice so we could keep our drink bottles filled and cold while we traveled around and they gave us as much as we needed. We returned back later in the day to a completely cleaned room. The place was spotless. Our only regret was that we didn't book a lake view room which you can only get if you book directly with the hotel. Each night the hotel serves dinner as they have a small restaurant where guests get a 25% discount. The food was homemade and not your typical Italian cuisine. The chef explained each dish and we really enjoyed eating dinner on the lake. You will love this hotel.
Lake Como is a beautiful place, but it can be a bit too commercial in places. Alberghetto La Mariana is in a quiet location and the waterside terrace is a fantastic place to take breakfast and we also enjoyed a spritz before dinner here.
Our room had a wonderful view of the lake and its easy to walk to the ferry port to cross the lake to wherever you fancy. When we were there the weather was a bit dodgy but we watched a fantastic storm with lightening over the mountains. The building is traditional and the bed was comfortable. The food is obviously freshly prepared with dishes created using traditional recipes, but I found it a little bland and not as exciting as I had anticipated. I know well what a traditional Italian dinner consists of, and I just found the meals here a little lacking in variety. But, it is good and the chef is sincere in what he is doing. We have a lovely stay and some long lasting happy memories will stay with us. Thank you to the family for giving us a homely and welcoming stay.
The hotel is really lovely and in a brilliant location! The whole family make you feel so welcome and truly at home, they offer lots of brilliant advice on travel, things to do and see and go above and beyond! 10/10 would recommend:)
Brava! Brava! If you are looking for a comfortable and cozy Lake Como “home away from home”, you have come to the right place.
La Marianna is an “all in the family” establishment- a small hotel (alberghetto) and well renowned restaurant both run by a handful of incredibly hard working people. Of my many trips to Europe, there are but a mere handful of hotels I still remember as extra-special ones after 25 years of travel. “La Marianna” and its caretakers will join that exclusive list. I stayed here for twelve nights, a lengthy hotel visit for this region, especially as an American traveler, and highly recommend you consider a visit here yourself.
In the mid lake region, La Marianna is situated directly adjacent to the western lakeshore, just a mere ten minutes or so on foot north of the small town center of Cadenabbia. You have the lake right at your doorstep, significantly more privacy and R&R than you would in the more well known towns across the lake, and all in all, it is a much more restful experience, in my humble opinion. On anything but the most abbreviated of visits, you can easily ferry hop to Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio (the last also reachable by public bus). And you can also see and wave to these towns while enjoying a cappuccino on your own serene arbor-covered breakfast terrace, then hop on over before the crowds descend. In many ways, La Marianna’s location is the best of both worlds. Other locales mid lake are still close by, and I made two farther day trips easily from this location.
Enjoy a room that’s traditionally furnished and comfortable. I was surprised how affordable my room was (with a lake view) for this location. The hotel itself, a small villa, is snug and cozy, beautifully decorated with lots of local tradition, personality, and amore. Breakfast is incredibly generous by European standards, especially from my trips in Italy years ago. Enjoy homemade jam, bread, and cake, yogurts, fruit, salami, cheese, eggs, and the allure of a slow second cappuccino every morning of your stay.
I would be greatly remiss to neglect to mention the very outstanding restaurant just outside your door. You’d be silly to eat anywhere else- this place is the best- ask the locals! Reserve that morning at breakfast to be assured a seat for later that evening. The family chefs do a stupendous job carefully crafting a seasonal menu at this “undemocratic establishment”, where a monthly four course dinner menu rotates daily. Choose a selection of the four courses, or just those that you prefer. I never found a meal that was less than exceptional, and found dinner here was a genuine highlight of my trip as a whole. There was even a generous discount as a guest of the hotel.
Parents and kids, Tiziano, Paola, Giacomo, and Marta, are kind and caring people and gracious hosts and deserve your consideration at their special little corner of Como, La Alberghetto de la Marianna.
Simplest directions by bus: You’re about an hour away when you board in Como, getting close when you pass Tremezzo (you’ll see orange signs for the Grand Hotel Tremezzo). In Cadenabbia center (next town north), be on the lookout for the ferry docks (two stout white pillars on your right, and lots of colored flags flying). Two stops after this is the hotel. If the bus is not too crowded, approach the driver and tell him you’re looking for “La Marianna Ristorante”. If it’s too crowded, signal for a stop after this- the bus won’t stop unless you request it. You’ll be dropped off either directly across from “Bar Company” (hotel is a five minute walk straight ahead, heading north) or at the hotel doorstep.
One small caveat, unfortunately reflective of this side of the lake as a whole, as a road runs right along the whole western lakeshore: Consider traffic noise and perhaps your room’s location if you are a light sleeper. (I slept lake facing, one level above the street.) If you want to enjoy the breeze off the lake overnight, consider packing earplugs, a sleep aid, or perhaps just more wine at the dinner table. Buon viaggio!
We stayed for 2 nights at this family run hotel. The owners, Jackamo, his dad and his sister, could not have been more friendly and helpful. It was a very personalised service and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast, drinks and dinner on the lakeside eating area was sublime - incredible views and nice and cool after a hot days sightseeing. A swim in the lake each early evening was also a lovely way to cool off. For the evening meal there is a set 4 course menu, which we had both nights, and it was very tasty - proper home cooked food. There are only about 8 tables which gave it a lovely relaxed atmosphere, against the backdrop of the lake and mountains. It was a very convenient location, just a few minutes walk from the nearest ferry, and about 15 minutes from the beautiful Villa Carlotta. Parking was arranged nearby and the room was clean and well furnished in a rustic, traditional style, albeit with air conditioning added!
I had a wonderful time at Alberghetto La Marianna, Giacomo and his mother were the most wonderful hosts! Breakfast overlooking lake como is amazing, they will make you eggs and coffee in the morning in addition to the nice spread they already provide. The rooms have great AC which is a must in the summer. Giacomo will help you with anything you need during your travels around the lake. He helped me find a very quick way over to Nesso and even found me a beach. I would most definitely stay again if I ever returned to Lake Como!
This was the best property we stayed at during our whole trip in Italy. The property is conveniently located to attractions and easy to get around to other parts of the lake. The breakfast is the best included breakfast we ever had with fresh homemade bread, jam, cake and much more! I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to book!
