The 2 older males who work here are very unfriendly, unwelcoming, and a bad representation of the business. Myself and my partner entered, got pointed to a table and ignored. Whether the staff are homophobic- I don’t know, but certainly not a good look for Vila Ventura.
We both ordered risotto, which was bland, flavourless, and far too hot to try to eat. After leaving it for 10 minutes it was still ridiculously hot, so we ate what we could and left.
Been to many restaurants in the area, and this is most certainly not one I would return to, and not one I would recommend
Quiet location and quite remote. Definitely need a car to explore this area and beyond. Hotel is clean and tidy with regular daily cleaning service. Reception staff are polite, friendly and very helpful. Hotel grounds are very limited with no outside public areas or gardens. Canico is not the most attractive place with lots of concrete, even around the beach front. Parking is very sparse around the roads . Rooms are generally a good size, with good balconies, . Just as well with the lack of green and public green spaces. Doesn’t really match Funchal as a holiday location. Attractions locally and walks are very limited. Only so many times you can walk along the concrete sea front.
Canico de Baixo itself is quite uninteresting and doesn’t really have a heart. There is nowhere you could actually call the hub or centre which is quite disappointing.
WiFi was very poor throughout my stay which was quite frustrating as the TV only showed 8 German, french and Portuguese channels and NO English channels (not sure why!?). This wouldn’t usually be an issue, however with such limited things todo during the evenings, it would have been helpful to have at least something to watch. This hotel would be nice for a few days relaxation, but for a week or more, it doesn’t really have enough to keep you interested. Overall I enjoyed the time here, but wouldn’t do a return visit to Canico.
We stayed for 4'weeks over Xmas and New Year. The staff were all excellent especially the receptionists. Our return flight was cancelled and they all helped us with forms and getting a covid test. The rooms and bathrooms were spotless. We had two rooms with breakfast included. Each room had a small kitchen so we cooked sometimes and ate in the restaurant on other occasions. I had asked for a heater in the room before arriving and it was provided. I also borrowed an iron and ironing board. The restaurant had a limited menu but the food was very good with reasonable prices. I loved the complementary sangria offered at mealtimes. The location was peaceful and their prices more than fair for what you get.
Einzigartig war das Zimmer mit dem wunderschönen Balkon und
die Freundlichkeit der Angestellten.
Sehr freundliches, hilfsbereites Personal. Gute Lage. Sehr sauber. Für ein Hotel/ Appartment ruhig.
The place looks cozy, better than all the bright-light restaurants. The food was not bad, but the service is crap! Waiters that place food on your table on their way to another table, no single friendly word. We didn’t feel welcome! This is the first time in my life I didn’t leave a tip.
We stayed from March into Easter (April) 2018 and loved it. We did not want to go home. The restaurant is in a lovely outdoor setting with good service. Fantastic barbecue and oven. Our room (no 10 ) had a spacious terrace looking out with glimpses of the sea and a steakhouse across the road which also has a dramatic outside area on the cliffs. Room spotless, linen changed every day if wanted. Bus stop around the corner with a great service connecting all of the Island. More bars/restaurants and small shops 5 minute walk away. Ideal , peaceful base. Lovely bar person in Josie, so helpful. Thank you xx
A word of warning if you have any walking difficulties, Canico my not be the best place for you as everywhere is either uphill or downhill
My review is based on a week at the Vila Ventura for end of August into September.
The accommodation is self catering ,although there is a restaurant on the premises, We had Room 11 on the ground floor , the room was not huge but adequate for 2 people, a small kitchen area just in the door with 2 ring hob, fridge, microwave, sink and extractor hood, we asked for a toaster and kettle both were supplied immediately. There are 2 beside tables, a dining table and another side board type unit , good sized wardrobe and safe (charged extra for key 8 euros for week and 5 euro deposit),and a smallish but adequate bathroom,my only small gripe about the Vila Ventura was the shower head was towards the corner of the wall and you could not change the angle. a terrace outside with 2 good comfortable chairs and a small table, then a bonus, a little bit of garden between the apartment and the boundary wall. There are plenty of greenery and palms there so we never felt over looked ( the garden is about 10 foot above pavement height). We had a reasonable view of the sea between a couple of buildings
The Vila is spotlessly clean, all the reception staff are really friendly and very helpful with anything you need i.e car hire , taxi or advice on where to visit. and speak excellent English.
The Garden restaurant is up 3 short flights of stairs and is partailly covered, it has a nice relaxed atmosphere and the food is superb , especially the skewers.
Madeira is a very friendly, relaxed island probably better suited to the more mature traveller.
Canico is a small town with everything you could need but limited on choice for shopping other than daily essentials, We found it an excellent base for getting out and about to see more of the island The scenery is breathtaking in the mountains
We really enjoyed our stay and I can highly recommend The Vila Ventura ( would have given it 6 stars if I could)
The staff were friendly and spoke English.
The evening meal was tasty and very reasonable.
There is a lovely outdoor dinning area as well. Please note there are stairs to climb down to gain access to the outdoor dinning area.
I enjoyed a beautiful week of active vacation in Madeira. Vila Ventura was the ideal launch pad. I felt welcome immediately. My room was spacious and very clean, the balcony was large. The kitchenette allowed me to cook a little something and to keep my lunch in the fridge. The personnel were always friendly and very helpful. My room had good WLAN. The only thing I was missing was a hairdryer.
This apartment-hotel offers nice Roms with a little kitchenplace, bathroom and balcony. The view is wonderful. Blue sea behind some orange rooftops.
And directly in front of our roomdoor the best restaurant in town, with faboulous barbecued fish dishes .
We stayed at the Vila Ventura for 2 weeks. Nothing was too much trouble for the very friendly and helpful receptionists Sandra and Paula . A decent size room and bathroom were kept spotlessly clean. Breakfast good. The restaurant provides top quality food and drink at a good price. Good, quiet location.A car is recommended if you want to travel around the island independently. This hotel is certainly the best value establishment we can recall visiting, including the 5 star places frequented regularly on business before retirement. You will not be disappointed.
We spent a week in February in a room on the second floor. Peek-a-boo views of the ocean from a large balcony over frontline Rocamar and Cais da Oliveria hotels. Updated kitchenette and bath. Beds were fine, not too firm, but pillows were lumpy. Helpful, friendly and kind staff. Very hilly area, it's a hike to the oceanfront walkway. Promenade not as well kept or as pretty as in Sao Marthino area. Very rocky shoreline with few swimmers in a rough sea. Enjoyed the cat community! Not much going on in Feb. Most guests leave the hotel during the day in cars, busses or tours. TV was mostly German as were the guests. Hotel restaurant is very good and fairly priced. Not many restaurants or shops in the area. A couple of small mini-markets with limited choices within walking distance.
Ive got to be fair and rate this hotel as a three star, which is all it claims to be, which is what we wanted for our little few days break, and as such it scores quite well.
It's the sort of place that doesn't present you with all you could wish straight off, but the lovely helpful staff will find things if you Judy ask - kettle, hair dryer etc.
It has a very nice little restaurant/bar, we can recommend the espetadas; breakfast was a little basic but adequate, which is all it ever tries to be.
Room was basic but clean, and a nice big balcony. If this is all you want you won't be disappointed, and it's good value. We saw no evidence of fans or heaters but we didn't ask. All in all a good value 4 out of 5, and again, really lovely staff.
We had a lovely big room which was very clean. There was no toaster but one was quickly produced when asked for. No air conditioning and very warm at night but the receptionist was happy to find us a fan. We had a balcony but not much of a view. This area was mainly hotels and holiday lets but it was a short bus ride into Funchal which was lovely and you could pick up a bus to many places including the mountains! The restaurant was excellent and we ate there most nights, enjoying fresh fish and huge skewers!
This is our fourth holiday on the beautiful island of Madeira, and the fourth time we've stayed at Vila Ventura. We love the fact that it is a "small and friendly" hotel, with recently refurbished rooms which are spacious and kept spotlessly clean. We ate at the restaurant most nights, and the food was delicious, as always. The staff at Vila Ventura are professional and friendly, and are happy to help with any queries. I would agree with the reviewer who said that the pillows need replacing, but other than that, we have absolutely no complaints, and hope to return to this lovely hotel at some point in the not-too-distant future.
We always prefer small and friendly hotels with a more homely feel and that's certainly what we found at the Vila Ventura. Although we were possibly the only British guests at the time all the staff spoke very good English and went out of their way to have a chat and a joke or to recommend places of interest to visit.
The rooms are immaculate with a small kitchen area although I must confess I didn't use it as there are plenty of good restaurants near by to sample not to mention the excellent on sight 'Garden Restaurant'. We so enjoyed the plentiful continental breakfast provided each morning.
Well our bags are now packed and unfortunately we'll soon be heading back to rainy Manchester but I have no doubts that we'll be back.
Many thanks to everyone for making this the relaxing holiday we were in need of.
