Outstanding hotel. Worthy of its 5* status.
Beautiful, stylish hotel with stunning gardens plus access to the Palheiro gardens.
Staff are exceptional and nothing is too much trouble.
Rooms are tastefully decorated and of a very high standard. Lovely touch in the room was the Madeira wine and local cake.
Breakfast is excellent with plenty of choice. Dinner is out of this world. The creativity and quality is sublime using local produce. Michelin star quality.
Lovely pool area with sun loungers.
Spa was great and offered many different treatments. Worth a visit.
Highly recommend Casa Velha for a peaceful, tranquil holiday to reset yourself.
I am looking forward to a third visit soon.
Gardens were spectacular

It’s a beautiful place with beautiful gardens. The staff in the bar and dining room are excellent. I think it was a bit pricey for what it is. Because of the charges I think they have to be 100% and sadly they are not. The garden room we were shown was very dark and depressing, we eventually upgraded to a lovely room and paid the supplement. I reported some issues with the electrics and lamps in the room very early in our stay and was told it would be fixed, it never was. One night turn down did not replace dirty crockery so no clean cups for coffee in the morning and another night they did not replenish toilet paper - fairly basic stuff in my opinion. We had a lovely dinner in Oxalis which was beautifully prepared and presented but not worth three times the price of other restaurants in town. The golf course is challenging and pretty. The golf club bar and restaurant are excellent and the staff very friendly.
Everything! Location, the vibe, food, and facilities!
Nothing. Perfect!
Erinomainen majoitus, rauhallinen sijainti, kaunis luonto, erinomaiset ulkoilumahdollisuudet. Huoneemme, sängyt, kylpyhuone kaikki erittäin hyviä hyviä.
Ei tule mitään mieleen.
Beautiful location. Fantastic views, gardens, golf course, staff, food, ambience.

It was a wonderful vacation in a beautiful setting. Everyone was friendly, and the breakfast was delicious. It was pure relaxation.
Die Lage ist einmalig, sehr ruhig und mit nur 38 Zimmern auch übersichtlich
We had a wonderful holiday in Funchal, and a lot of it was owed to this lovely hotel!
As soon as we walked onto the grounds we were welcomed by the reception staff at the hotel. They were incredibly kind and understanding that our flight was earlier than the check-in time, and we were able to go to our room after checking in. We felt as though we could ask for anything, especially with the ability to contact the team through WhatsApp. Even small things, like us forgetting to close our window before we left, they sorted for us, it was really amazing service. The hotel itself is in a lovely area of Madeira, with the nature on your doorstep. We are so sad we only visited the botanical gardens on our last day, as they really are beautiful. The dinner at Oxalis, was amazing. The love and effort the chefs put into the meals there is felt, and we really enjoyed every meal there. All of the staff are amazing, and when we asked for help they did their best to assist us.
When travelling cleanliness is a very important factor for me, and I have very high standards for hotels that I travel to. Casa Velha do Palheiro was very clean, the room was turned over very well, with the floor being dustless, no staining on the bedding, and minimal residue on the surfaces around the room. The grounds were maintained every single day we were there and we saw how much love and care was put into the surrounding area. The communal areas were tidy and clean, and we felt very comfortable there. This was an incredible introduction to Madeira, and we are so glad we picked it!
Very rarely, we found that communication would fall apart and lead to some mistakes. For example, we had asked the reception staff if we could have our breakfast early, they confirmed it, but in the morning when we arrived early, the breakfast staff were unaware of this. We did speak to them about this, and got some understanding of how this happened. We also found that the seal on our hotel room door did not fully seal out the outside, so there would be ants in the room. Again the hotel did apologise, and though they cannot control nature at all, they were happy with us leaving a towel against the door to prevent this.
Overall, when I travel it isn't about everything being perfect and nothing going wrong - it's about how this is communicated after and having a regular human to human approach to it. This is why we loved this place, it was like staying with people you already trusted - we would definitely come back.
