A friendly hotel and couldn’t fault the staff at all but we were quite disappointed at the size of our room which was very small and considering how much we had paid for just a six day holiday we would have expected more than what we got. I’m over 6 feet tall and it was literally impossible for me to use the lavatory in our small bathroom as it was tucked away in a corner of the room next to the shower cubicle with next to no room to manoeuvre at all, so I had to go to the first floor to use the general use toilet on the landing there instead.
As for the food, I think they were perhaps trying to be too Cordon bleu when all everyone wanted in our group was just some good hearty food after a long day on the mountains. We had three soups during our five day stay, Pumpkin, Red Cabbage, and Broccoli. Who thought those up, what happened to just Beef broth, Mushroom, tomato soup etc. which people would have more preferred. the red cabbage soup was not generally well received so stop trying to be too clever. Most of the deserts were passable but strange that we were never given a taste of Switzerland such as Strudel for instance. The one day we had a fondue but rather than the traditional cheese fondue we had a meat one which most people didn’t really take to. The mains were also just OK but again one felt they were trying to be too clever, and where they gave us a half cooked and sliced potato with a slither of cheese on top, most people would have just preferred some mash, boiled, or roast potatoes. The packed lunch each day was a bit stingy as well, two small triangle sandwiches and a bottle of water. The fruit was usually an orange but where on a mountain can you sit and have time to peel it, whereas just an apple or banana would have been much easier, so consequently I never took an orange for that reason.
Overall, for what we paid I would have expected a better standard of accomodation and expected the evening meal to have been more substantial, but on the plus side it was in a beautiful location, the staff were excellent, and the view from our bedroom window was pretty good.
A very pleasant stay. The food served was very good and the service of the staff was excellent.
Free drinks: Concentration on alchohol. My request for an orange juice was refused.
We visited this hotel as part of a group booking and used it as a base for various excursions. For this reason, I have no idea what it costs to stay here.
First the good points: the wait staff and cleaning staff were excellent and those we met were all friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the room, although basic, was adequate (as it should have been for an allegedly upgraded room). The bathroom looked tired (no shaver socket) but the shower worked and provided hot water. There was a room safe although it was tempermental. The room benefitted from a balcony with chairs and a table, with pleasant views. Also, the wi-fi worked fairly well, although it struggled at times with range. There was no aircon in the rooms, not that this is needed in early March; the heating was efficient.
Let the critique commence! Firstly, there were no tea- or coffee-making facilities in the bedroom and, outside of meal-times, I couldn't find any others in the hotel (the upstairs dining room was kept locked; the downstairs dining room was reserved for (I assume) those guests seeking the Michelin-starred menu). This highlights another major issue I had with the hotel: without a lounge or bar area, we had nowhere to meet and chat with our group outside of meal times, and no place to order drinks and snacks if we had wanted them.
The food was plentiful but obviously the Michelin-starred chef had delegated its preparation to other less qualified cooks. There was a very limited choice of food, and the alternative main course option (vegetarian only) was similarly minimal and had to be selected in the morning. Gluten-free guests in our group were not well catered for: a single option of omelette and chips isn't acceptable in this day and age. Some dishes were really quite tasty but some were iffy to say the least. With no real menu choice, I had to either pretend my Mum was with me ("You will eat it and you will enjoy it!") or skip courses entirely.
Breakfast was uninspiring and disappointing. The only hot food options I spotted were boiled eggs (cook your own) and toast, the croissants were tiny and the meat selection was small. A limited selection of other breads, pastries and cakes was available. The cheese selection was good, however.
The two older ladies who ran the hotel (possibly sisters?) were brusque with the guests, often to the point of rudeness. For example, if you didn't take the provided clingfilm-wrapped sandwich pretending to be a packed lunch and cross off your name on the list, you got a telling-off! We opted for a quiet life, took the sandwich, crossed off our names and counted our blessings.
Finally, the location. Circa 700 metres from the shops and train station, and up a road with only a slight incline, the hotel is in a good position, and there are other hotels and cafes close by. There appears to be lots of parking. At night, it is quiet and easy to sleep.
Lovely family hotel , large comfortable rooms , friendly attentive staff and great location, short walk to railway station and bus stop just around the corner.
Just on our way home from from 5 night stay at this hotel.
Loved the simple rustic charm. Comfortable beds all very clean. Food and service excellent. The wine flowed at meal times..2 hours of limitless wine..or beer and soft drinks..
We had a packed lunch daily and probably the only recommendation would be to alternate perhaps from sandwiches daily to a small salad and or quiche for a change.
Super place to be! 🤗👍🏼
All in one : fantastic food (congrats to Chef Stöckli !) & quite peaceful room to sleep (room20!) with view & very nice people who serve/clean in the hotel! Very international team, which is very nice to see/hear,…
We also enjoy very much the breakfast, which is incredible rich & pure,
We come here since 2007, and come back every year especialy for the wonderfull food & kind people who work here.
We always have nice ski-adventures in the mountains around.
There’s no better place than the Alpenblick Hotel in Wilderswil 😉👌🏼🍀.
Room were very good. Hotel staff very friendly and efficient. Dining room very hot. Food was adequate but same every day apart from main course. Chef lacking imagination After five nights tends to get boring. Same old same old
Updated room was clean and pleasant. Lunches were the same every day: cheese and/ or ham sandwiches. Egg sandwiches arrived a day later than requested. Same cake every day. Dining room was uncomfortable and too hot at dinner.
Dinners were ok but lacked choice: it was similar every day.
Meat fondue for dinner raised queries/concerns. Diners had to cook their own strips of pork/turkey/ beef. Diners mixed raw meat with cooked meat in the fondue pot.
Dining staff were extremely helpful and pleasant.
We stayed at this hotel over Christmas and it was amazing from the moment we arrived we felt part of the family , the reception area was quaint with a Christmas tree and a few chairs to sit in
Our room we were in number 10 on the 2 nd floor was great very traditional style with comfortable beds and very warm , lovely bathroom and plenty of storage we even had a balcony ,
Breakfast each morning was very nice and a great choice of food from the amazing breads to the delicious cheese, cereal and juice with pastries so much food
We were out each day discovering the surrounding villages and mountains we came back to a very homely atmosphere with the smell of dinner waiting for us
The food was delicious and plentiful with all the staff so amazing and attentive
On Christmas Eve we were treated to a beautiful thought out menu and the owners were there to entertain us with a wonderful Christmas story read by the daughter, with traditional music
All in all I can’t thank them enough for giving us so many happy new memories
COMPLETELY DELIGHTED WITH OUR STAY AT THE ALPENBLICK HOTEL.
We cannot find any complaints in any departments. The food was outstanding as were the staff and cleanliness of this Alpine paradise. We would recommend to all our friends.
good food friendly service comfortable rooms some information re bus times to and from the station would be helpful Its quite a hike on foot after a tiring day
We were on a train holiday and the hotel was a 10 minute walk from the station. The hotel was a classic large Swiss chalet on varying levels, all of wood with an annexe across a single track cul-de-sac quiet road on the edge of the village, making for a very peaceful atmosphere. Our room was a reasonable size, ensuite with wood floors. As with everything in Switzerland, everything was spotless. We were on a group holiday with 37 of us and the value, when taking in all the amazing places we visited, made it good value. There are two restaurants, one of which is on the first floor, which was quite cramped, possibly because of the size of our group. The main restaurant, on the ground floor was much larger. The service was quite disorganised, not that it spoilt it for us.
Hotel Alpenblick is a home from home. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the food is lovely and the staff are really friendly and helpful.
A lovely, traditional style old hotel with excellent, friendly service and great food. And within ten minutes walk of the railway station at Wilderswil offering easy access to various places to visit.
Nice old fashioned building ,shame you couldn’t put the heat on in the room and bathroom and toilet were to small .staff give us food and clean rooms were great
What a difference to have a family run hotel rather than a chain. Customer service was excellent.
The food was exceptional.
The standard of cleanliness couldn't be faulted.
First class hotel spotless clean and comfortable and the staff were efficient and friendly definitely go again. Recommend
I was leading a group of thirty to the Swiss Alps and the service and welcome we received at the Alpenblick was outstanding. Food and drink excellent, the property is full of alpine character. The staff were all very attentive and professional.
This beautiful hotel is full of character and history. It’s just a short, flat walk from Wilderswil station, ideally located for all the main day excursions. The Schynige Platte railway departs from Wilderswil station, which is especially convenient.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The meals were outstanding – breakfast offered an excellent variety of fresh, tasty options, and the evening meals were top quality. We were even provided with picnic lunches featuring healthy food, such as fresh apples and pears from the September harvest.
Our room was clean and well equipped, with a powerful shower and a very comfortable bed. I enjoyed sleeping with the window open and hearing the gentle sound of the fountains as I drifted off.
All in all, it was an amazing week organised by Great Rail Journeys, and I would thoroughly recommend the Hotel Alpenblick.
