The room was the only thing we truly enjoyed about our stay at Solymar
Pros:

The room was great. There’s really nothing to complain about except for the absence of a kettle (read further about this funny little detail). The bed was very soft and comfy, and the bathroom was clean and comfortable. The room was cleaned every day, the staff did their job well, and the towels were changed daily. The sea view from the balcony was very nice. The room was also very quiet, we rarely heard anyone in the hallway or in the neighbouring rooms.

On my fiancée’s birthday, the staff brought a piece of cake and two small bottles of some kind of cider/diluted wine to our room, which was very nice of them. We were actually quite surprised by this kind gesture considering all the other things I’m going to mention below.

The gym is good.

Cons:

I’m really surprised this hotel has such a high rating. Maybe the majority of guests leaving all these good reviews only stay for 1–2 days, because otherwise I find it hard to believe the reviews are genuine. I stayed at Solymar with my fiancée for 9 nights for a post-proposal beach holiday, and during our stay we were frustrated almost every single day by how careless the staff seemed to be and by the way the hotel operates. I won’t mention absolutely everything here, just the most upsetting and surprising things we experienced.

In the room, there was a “tea corner” with everything you need to make tea except for… a kettle :))) At first, we thought this must have been a mistake and that they had simply forgotten to put one in the room. But when we went to reception to ask for a kettle, they requested a €25 deposit. We were very surprised by this, as we’ve never experienced anything like it in other hotels. And the kettle they eventually gave us was covered with a thick layer of limescale inside, to the point that pieces of it were literally coming off, so we couldn’t use it.

During our stay, the staff were generally very unhelpful and careless, even at reception, which is where you would most expect people to actually help you. Eventually, we learned one simple rule: whatever we wanted to ask them for, the answer was “no”. So we basically started trying to sort everything out ourselves rather than going to reception for help. By the end of our stay, we had almost developed a nervous tic from how often we heard the word “no”. 😂

For example, I bought flowers for my fiancée’s birthday and asked reception for a vase. They told me to go here and there and ask this person and that person, but nobody actually got me a vase. What a joke — in a hotel like this, getting a vase for a guest must apparently be such a unique and extraordinary request! I ended up buying a 5-litre plastic bottle of water and making a vase myself.

Prima hotel, maar wel in drukke buurt gelegen.
Pros:

Ontbijt en avondeten waren prima in orde. Veel keuze.
Personeel was zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam.
De bedden waren zeer goed en er was keuze van type kussens, zo gewenst.

Cons:

De ligging viel wat tegen, was in drukke buurt met straatlawaai.
We wilden de zee horen en slapen met het raam open, maar dat kon niet wegens te veel lawaai.
