Better off in a tent!

Kingsgate Hotel Te Anau my worst hotel experience in years! Why?

On arrival the receptioniat is most concerned with how we will pay our bill, then we discover there's no lift, but we are on the first floor, no offer of assistance with heavy cases.

We enter our 'Superior King room', 1970's decor, plain dark brown well worn wrinkled carpet, no air con, its your and quite depressing. There are only 3 things pillows, so we ask reception for a 4th and enquire what is Superior about the room. The view we are told! What view? All you can see is the corrugated roof of the hotel restaurant and a miniscule section of lake through net curtains (see pic). The shower head is fixed at 5'6" above the bath, good luck you 6 footers, the mattress is old and lumpy, and the TV picture has more snow than the Antarctic. We asked for the tv to be repaired the following day when we weren't in the room, it wasn't!

We considered breakfast but at 8.30am there was no fruit left so we went out for breakfast, same for dinner.

We went to the bar for an evening drink with other guests to be told it closes at 8pm. We were sat with six other people who all wanted to sit and relax and chat in the bar but we were all turfed out and told to take our drinks to our rooms like naughty school children AT 8PM.

This hotel caters for coach loads of elderly tourists who they seem to prioritise over other guests, must be their bread and butter.

I could go on but I have no doubt this review will fall on deaf ears. I have tried to find something positive.....but I cant!

I challenged the manager on all of this and his explanation just dug a deeper hole to my mind. He explained the reason the bar closed at 8pm was because the staff have to be in work early the following day! What a great guy to work for. Ever thought of employing more staff or, heres a revolutionary idea, shift work??

Really enjoyed our stay and would book again
Pros:

Room was abit small, but we were only there for 1 night, my fault though. Great being close to the waterfront of the lake and walking distance of shops. Bed was really comfortable, best motel/hotel bed I've slept in, usually end up with sore back in the morning in other places I've stayed

Cons:

Not that I didn't like anything about the place, it was my fault for not looking properly when I booked it
