Die Aussicht. Das Zimmer. Das Personal war super freundlich.
Etwas teuer.
Hi the positive of this hotel is the staff especially Connie, lovely view of the sea but unfortunately there is a road outside the hotel (see photo) so you could not sit out there because all you could hear was traffic. Swimming pool had green at the bottom in the corners, sunbeds were stained and one ripped, so it looks neglected There is nowhere to dry swimming costumes on balcony, the hotel do provide pool towels. You cannot walk down road as there is no pavements but they have a good bus service to town. They have a bus from the hotel but only in the week and last one from hotel is around 5 Pool bar was not open and if people went into hotel and brought the drinks up to the pool they would still be there the next day. No entertainment except 1 night a week of traditional dancing, but that didn't bother us But as we went into town most night as the food in the hotel was ok (big portions), but expensive and there is more choice in the town. Room was clean apart from makeup on curtain but it was shabby (see pictures), bed comfy. Breakfast was ok, nice bread but pancakes were supermarket so not made fresh in the hotel so little rubbery. this hotel is not a 4 star hotel.
Gorgeous property. Although almost nothing is walkable in the area, the property itself was gorgeous. The rooftop is spacious and well maintained. The pool is great. The staff is very kind and we dined at the restaurant every night. It is a convenient location if you have a car. We would love to come back.
The water was often luke warm if not even cold. I'm sure it was due to showering during busy times during peak season though.
Nice hotel with good views over the bay of Funchal. 3 free shuttle buses each way and regular buses costing 1.95 euros each way. Breakfast is good. Pleasant and friendly staff. Good rooftop pool. Quiet at the moment but early in the season. Bedrooms excellent in annex with wonderful sea view balcony.
Great breakfast and outstanding view from our room over Funchal.
The hotel was clean with great amenities and a wonderful daily breakfast with many options. The staff was lovely and helpful. There was construction going on at the time so that was a bit noisy, but was not a hindrance. I would stay there again.
Nice ocean view from our balcony. Loads of greens, plants and flowers.
The rooms are very old fashioned, the bathroom also need updating. We were pretty lucky as the hotel was nearly empty during our stay so we had the sauna and the pool all to ourselves. The pool was nice but it needs a good cleaning as the bottom was very dirty. Unfortunately the bar on the terrace was closed so we couldn’t even enjoy a few drinks while admiring the view. That was disappointing.
The staff at the restaurant didn’t look too happy to be there. The food was one of the worst I’ve ever had, the fish was swimming in oil, we ordered steak and they didn’t even ask how we liked it cooked, unfortunately it wasn’t cooked properly as some part of the steak was fully cooked some was medium some was medium rare.
Clean, comfortable room with balcony. Good views of Funchal.
WiFi at best intermittent and then very weak. Very poor phone signal.
Returned from spending Christmas 2024/New Year 2025. The hotel listed as 4 star yet simple little things have you wonder the rating. There was no hospitality tray so more or less after breakfast there's nothing. Breakfast tables not laid out and tables not cleared until you leave. Breakfast a good variety but always warm/cold. No Christmas feel to the hotel at all, seperate dining area was lovely laid out but in no way for residents outside guests only. There was also a bar within this part of the hotel but was never once opened for residents. Never used the onsite restaurant but from others heard not up to scratch. There was a tiny bar within there but closed at 10.30 if not before and actually put all lights on while we were sitting with another couple!. New Year, disappointing again seemed to cater for outside guests or if we were willing to pay well over the odds to be part of this over and above the expense of going there in the first place. Just before midnight those from this event went up to pool area. Where we had gone no alternative bar in restaurant reluctant to serve us and when they did price was doubled. The only positive thing was the beautiful view from the pool area (never had the pleasure of using as water freezing and no cleaning of the pool was ever done, bar there was also closed the whole time, even though in brochure it give bar opening times summer/winter). The fireworks display was amazing and I can see how they have won awards (the town itself, not the hotel). The hotel very much out the way albeit they say shops/restaurants within walking distance! Courtesy bus to town mon-fri book day before only ever used once. Local bus 39 at a cost of 2 euros or buy weekly ticket. Only thing the last one left Central at 9.30pm. There was other buses that if you held hand out would stop but I believe you not able to use weekly ticket. The town funchal itself has a lot of lovely restaurants and the things they had on for Christmas were amazing. We done a few trips and the cable car. We have for the last 4 years gone away for this period but sadly will not return to this hotel.
Lovely hotel with excellent facilities . As it is a little way out of the main town it is quieter . Six of us have just enjoyed a really lovely stay for a week . The food is very nice and the hotel very clean and beautifully managed . The staff are all very friendly and helpful . There is a hotel shuttle bus into town and taxis are easy to arrange . Also local buses stop outside . We asked for the superior rooms with a view and what an amazing view it is too ! We would definitely be happy to recommend . Thank you everyone at the Ocean Gardens for making our stay so enjoyable and relaxing . Carolyn York U.K.
It’s a nice clean hotel and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Special mention to Valerie in reception and Barbara in the breakfast room, and of course Louis who regularly drove us into Funchal. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, indeed, the fresh rye bread was lovely.
Our room was spacious and immaculate. We had an amazing view from our verandah but my only quibble was not having coffee and tea making facilities. It would also have been nice to have an iron and board in the room and whilst the room information stated laundry was available in an emergency, I didn’t class unpacking and wanting to press clothes before wearing an emergency; no I didn’t ask reception so possibly my bad.
We opted for B&B, for which we were glad, as we were very disappointed with the restaurant downstairs which was not good and expensive, so we only ate there twice due to necessity.
The hotel is a little out of town, so either hire a car or be prepared to take either the free weekday hotel bus or public transport, both very efficient and
I stayed at the Ocean Gardens for a week over Xmas and found it to be a good base for my holiday in Maderia. It's situated just outside of the capital,Funchal, and it's got a convenient bus stop into town right outside the hotel. The drive into town is around 10 minutes and they provided a timetable for the bus. The rooms are very nice and plenty of storage space for your clothes. It has a TV and telephone and small fridge in the room. My only quibble is that they don't have tea/coffee facilities in the room but reception let me have a kettle for my room. The restaurant is nice although I only had a couple of meals in it and preferred to venture into town and try to different restaurants and bars. They have a swimming pool on the 4th floor and I did use the breakfast room every morning and there is a good selection of choices for breakfast. The staff are very friendly and helpful with any questions about the area and they provided a company that does tours around the island. I went with a tour group attached to the company I booked the holiday with but it's worth checking out the different options. I had a nice stay in the Ocean Gardens and can recommend it for a nice option in Maderia
