I felt personally taken care of during my stay at The County Hotel. I wish that I could have stayed longer.
From personal correspondence prior to the stay, to be shown the room with pertinent information to ensure that I had all that I needed.
I was taken by the Edwardian detail to be found throughout the room and common areas, with modern conveniences to make the stay comfortable.
The staff are helpful and caring. The location is central and walkable to many services and sights.
A beautiful experience. An incredible period hotel with wonderful and friendly staff who will do anything for you. Can’t wait to return. And wonderful food in the restaurant
This hotel is so special. Forget the large chain style hotels and stay here where you meet and mix with the owners. They are passionate about your stay and provide a gorgeous, heritage property right in the middle of town. The rooms are quiet and peaceful thanks to the double glazing and they are all different, making each stay unique. The rooms are well appointed and tastefully decorated. The library, on the first floor is a quiet place in which to enjoy a complimentary port after dinner, seated in a studded leather wing backed chair or choose a book from their large library. The Churchill bar is a fantastic place for drinks and snacks with a welcoming atmosphere, don’t miss this. The main restaurant serves the most fabulous food, the chefs have put together thoughtful menus that don’t disappoint. Do yourself a favour and book this hotel for your next stay, you won’t regret it. Thank you for a lovely, relaxing stay!
Really loved my time here! Was made to feel so welcome. The rooms were clean and tidy, beautifully decorated, with everything you needed. There was even a small library if you wanted a quiet place to ponder. Location was fantastic, so close to town and easy access to the waterfront. Loved the little touches. Would highly recommend and would love to stay again on my next trip to Napier.
Great choice for a boutique authentic art deco hotel stay . Excellent attention to detail and great hospitality.
Great quality and unique experience
The property promotes itself as a five-star hotel with exceptional attention to detail and impeccable service. In practice, the experience felt more in line with a comfortable mid-range stay rather than true luxury.
The building has a certain historic character, but it is also clear that its best years are behind it. While the essentials are in place—such as functioning air conditioning and basic in-room amenities—those expecting premium touches typically associated with high-end hotels may find them lacking.
One notable issue was the room layout: in some cases, rooms are separated from the hallway by a window covered only by a curtain. This allows significant light to enter at night, making proper rest difficult. Additionally, the bathroom ventilation system is quite dated and noticeably loud.
Another point worth mentioning is the absence of breakfast, which many travelers would reasonably expect at this category level.
Overall, while the hotel provides what is needed for a short overnight stay, the five-star designation does not seem fully justified. A three-star classification would be a more accurate reflection of the experience.
Future guests may wish to keep expectations measured and not be guided solely by the term “luxury,” as the offering does not align with that standard. Personally, I would consider alternative accommodations on a return visit.
We enjoyed every minute at Napier. Angela was a wonderful host, and very informative and attentive. We will definately go back there again.
It’s like coming home to your Family Castle!
We love every stay here, the staff are fantastic and the rooms are really pure luxury!
Perfectly located right in the centre of town with ample secure parking for even large vehicles. The Churchill Bar is excellent, and the evening meal was absolutely superb! Well worth booking ahead! We will be back again really soon!
Very welcoming historic hotel. They do the little things perfectly, such a memorable hotel and owners. Great location. We look forward to our next visit!
A superb hotel and certainly one to recommend. The staff are always attentive and helpful.
The restaurant is first class for dinner and reasonably priced.
This was a great place to stay and be immersed in beautiful art deco style. We based ourselves here for a weekend exploring Napier and the nearby vineyards. The central location of The County Hotel was perfect - walking distance to shops and restaurants, and also the beach. It was a half hour walk up to the Bluff Lookout which was great to see the sunrise. The hosts were so friendly, helpful and interested in hearing about our plans for exploring their city. We booked a Luxury Escapes package so the extra inclusions of parking, breakfasts (which were delicious), welcome drinks and a restaurant credit to use at Churchills Bar, as well as a snacks and wine supply in our room on arrival, made for an excellent deal.
My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights, and enjoyed our visit. Location is terrific, and the place is very historic, which we like. The suite was very nice, although I thought the space could have been used a bit better. For instance, there was a large dining room table, but no kitchen to eat in (so why such a big table?) The plugs and towel heater in the bathroom did not work, but that was minor. Staff was very, very helpful, looking up something for us and making recommendations. I wish there had been someone there more of the day, as we had questions and a couple of needs, but there was nobody to help. Restaurant is quite good. Altogether very personal, lovely experience. As always, need more reading lights. Would definitely recommend.
A wonderful stay and impeccable service. This Hotel is central to the CBD with many restaurants in walking distance. The onsite Churchill Restaurant is superb. The various add-ons from the Lux Escape Package make this a bargain stay.
The County always delivers - and over delivers - from the moment you step inside its elegant interior to receive warmly hospitable greeting from the FOH staff. The rooms are clean, spacious and full of individual character. There's nothing quite like a summer morning coffee on one of the top floor balconies to start the day. We dined several times at their in-house bar and restaurant during our stay and the both food and cocktails were superb, the perfect mix of modern and traditional style cuisine. We stayed during the Art Deco Festival, and the hotel was in perfect walking distance of all the major events. Stepping back into its cool, serene interiors after the frenetic activity outside was a refreshing experience on a hot summer day. A blend of tradition and contemporary comfort that is irresistible.
We enjoyed the most wonderful high tea over the Art Deco weekend. The food was absolutely exceptional — beautifully presented and delicious. The customer service was above and beyond; every staff member made us feel welcomed, looked after, and completely at ease during such a busy weekend, some of us even had our napkins placed over our knees!!
The premises themselves are stunning, creating the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed and elegant Deco experience. It was the ideal way to celebrate the weekend, and we left feeling thoroughly spoiled.
Highly recommend — we’ll definitely be back, maybe for a night or two next, a staycation!!
Stayed and dined. A great old hotel, not perfect, but built in 1909, has old world elegance and that art decco flair.
Room was good, bathroom large and bed comfortable.
We also dined, twice, food is good, drinks reasonable and you can read the Winston Churchill quotes for amusement.
Saw they had a special on, accommodation, $100 meal credit and breakfasts, well worth it, many thanks to Angela and crew
This was a short staycation - purchased a dinner/bed/breakfast gift voucher a few months ago. What a wonderful experience in every way - from check in, to our room, followed by a wonderful dinner and then breakfast at a local cafe. Angela and her team are outstanding hosts - made us feel very welcome, appreciated that we had chosen to stay at The County Hotel and did everything possible to make our short stay memorable. And it was. We will be doing it again.
Donnie and Angela.
Thanks for great night. Wish we have found you guys sooner. Folks stay at the place when in Napier. Don't waste you time anywhere else. These guys offer A+ service. So worth it.
We have stayed at this Hotel 4 times over the past 2 years, including stays with family and friends. We absolutely love this place with its old fashioned character and spotlessly clean rooms, but it is the exceptional service by Angela and her team which makes our stays an outstanding experience. Cannot wait to enjoy more stays at this lovely place !!
