Fun, comfortable and easy
Pros:

Hiro and his trainees were exceptionally friendly and helpful. As someone with rudimentary Japanese it was relieving to feel I was in careful attentive hands and my few problems were swiftly handled including parking gate issues and adding on a last minute 4th night to my stay! The value of the hotel in the $45-$75 range is stellar and I believe everything possible should be done to maintain this. The amenities available at the mall are a fantastic way to consume and snack your way through a day or two but I cannot recommend more doing a walking tour of true downtown Otaru and the lighthouse area to get a true sense of the town and it's more genuine local food offerings.

Cons:

The building was beautiful but some parts were beginning to show their age. For the fantastic value this venue provides I'd rather have (and honestly expect) some peeling wallpaper or a stain or two on lampshades as opposed to junk modern quality decor. It's a character forming patina, however we did have some large black mold deposits on the back-underside of the sink and the tub was no longer sealed against the walls which is only going to grow more mold and cause serious damages in the long run. These could become a danger to guests and the building if gone unaddressed so I thought I'd mention this as I'd love for myself and others to enjoy the Grand Park for decades to come!
