This mediocre package holiday hotel is run by three elderly people, two of which, especially, don’t like children. The two women are visibly annoyed as soon as they see children (especially when they think parents aren’t watching) and will grab them and tell them off without talking to the parents first and for minor disturbances. Our son is 1,5yrs and is not causing any offence, yet was grabbed by the wrist and the umbrella which he was quietly playing within the floor pulled out of his hand aggressively when they thought I wasn’t looking. My sister has three children, aged 4-12, and they grew scared of the two women during our time so that they did not want to be in the reception area. When I told the women to speak to me rather than touch our children or tell them off, I was met with protests and rudeness. One of the women, especially, is generally rude and unhelpful to adult guests as well – making moments such a check in a much more difficult process than I have ever experienced before. The rooms and facilities are clean but there’s nothing in them so caring for a small child is not entirely frictionless. There is for example no kettle in the room and you’re not allowed to plug one in. These are all small details, but the two women running the show made it downright horrible to stay there with children, especially since we’ve had a rainy week so have hd to spend a lot of time in the hotel reception / social area.
Room was clean.near beach and town .pool area was nice with lots of flowers and vine.
The prices for meals were expensive and definitely not value for money. We ate dinner first night, told to pay next morning after being asked if we would be having dinner that night, we said no.
When paying bill for dinner the previous evening they doubled the price, we were speechless actually this is an understatement!
We never ate in hotel again during our two week stay other than have breakfast which we had already paid for.
The owners of hotel one brother and two sisters were among the rudest people I ever had the misfortune to encounter.
Their attitude and overcharging for the one meal we had spoiled our holiday.
The one redeeming factor of our stay in Alghero was the nice shops in old town where I bought sandals and nice linen tops .
A lot of coral jewellery on sale but too expensive.
Nice supermarket near hotel which also sold fairly good takeaway meals and reasonably priced.
We had fish in a restaurant near harbour and the price was extortionate.
We were there in first two weeks of September weather was pleasantly warm but we were eaten by mosquitoes.
We both observed Italians only smile when you are parting with money.
I would love to go back to Alghero but would rather sleep on a street than stay in LaPlaya.
The La Playa Hotel is in an excellent location - a few minutes to the beach (including 'Magic Beach' with its green-fronded beach umbrellas), a reasonable selection of restos, and a good supermarket. The Wednesday street market which is a couple of blocks away is a 'must'! The quaint old town of Alghero is a 20-minute stroll along the prom, and the bus stop to/from the airport is 5 minutes away from the hotel.
The hotel itself is spotlessly clean - fresh towels every day, for example - and the 'pizzas by the pool' are very tasty indeed (especially the one with the French fries on it!). Said pool is lovely and blue and it was very pleasant to sit next to it of an evening drinking wine. The buffet breakfast is fine, if a little repetitive. What makes La Playa somewhat 'old-school' is the back-in-the-day tendency to charge for everything ... safe key, wi-fi, beach towels ... in this day and age, it is a little disconcerting to have to pay separately for these facilities - and in cash at that! In more up-to-date hotels, the cost is most probably factored into the price of the room/stay - so it's swings and roundabouts really. The hotel is presided over by two ladies (=sisters) who rule with a rod of iron - and very efficiently at that.
I would stay at this hotel again; it would be a shame if it ended up being run by a consortium and losing its somewhat quirky charm.
We had a great week at the la la playa, the room was clean and thought it faced onto a road was quiet and no bother at night. The pool is a good size clean and well maintained with plenty of beds and brollys. The food is where I am a bit puzzled,a fillet steak with side appetizer and dessert at 25 Euro is not too bad but a bowl of soup at 14 euro was a bit steep. but all in all I would recommend la playa.
This excellent family run hotel is rated as a 3 star but we thought it edged more towards a 4 star. It is 2 minutes from the beach, has a really spacious lounge and the bedroom is clean and comfortable with a good bathroom. It also has pretty gardens and a lovely large swimming pool. The food was excellent and better than in nearby restaurants. It was home cooked and varied and reasonably priced. We found the elderly owners charming. The brother takes care of the restaurant and bar and is a good host and the 2 sisters run the hotel with charm. All the other staff were also charming and friendly. They may be near retiring so if you want to really enjoy this hotel do it now before it is possibly taken over by people less caring. And for all dog lovers, now to mention Leila the resident dog, who loves being taken for a morning walk. So please if you have the time do take her for a morning promenade along the seafront. She tugs a little for the first 5 minutes due to excitement, but then walks with you at a leisurely pace.
Would highly recommend the hotel .... and the dog!
My husband and I stayed from 1st September /15th.
Hotel very clean with nice garden and pool. Breakfast repetitive, but adequate.
The owners ,two elderly sisters were like head mistresses from a bygone age, lacking in any warmth,or interest in clients.
We ate dinner first night which was pretty basic and small in quantity, had better in my local cafe !
When owners discovered we were not going to have dinner following evening the price
changed from €40 to €80 which totally shocked us,we vowed that we would not drink or eat anything in this hotel other than breakfast. Talk about day light robbery !
I am of the opinion that many Italians only smile if you are parting with your money.
Oh there was a brother also who was civil to us at the first and only dinner, after that he ignored us!
We so much regret that we didn’t choose self catering.
Of course no kettle allowed in room but we certainly used ours !
Dinning room staff were fine as was the old dog and cat.! There is an excellent supermarket nearby which we used every day, staff very helpful.
Enjoyed shopping in old town though no bargains I might add, lovely linen shop which I could not resist , kept going back. Coral everywhere but I was not tempted, also very expensive considering there seemed to be so much of it.
Considered going on trip to Corsica but 2 hour coach trip to harbour and leaving the island around 3pm , so for this reason decided to give it a miss.
Visited the Neptune cave by sea €13 PP a tad expensive ,can be accessed by road but not for the faint hearted as approx 650 steps to negotiate back up.
I have to mention the mosquitoes, totally unprepared , they feasted on both of us particularly my poor husband relentlessly ,little blighters so difficult to see and one is not actually aware at the time.
Stay at Hotel La Playa again , never would prefer staying in a tent or sleeping on a park bench.
Thanks to Julia, Flanca, Salvatore, Antonello, Sergio, Gero & the kitchen staff for making this a stay to remember. Very friendly and genuinely caring people. Although not “baby-friendly” they did their outmost to make life for our 8-month old the best possible. We’ll remember our stay fondly.
This charming family run hotel is an excellent 3* very well run and spotless. Rooms are very adequate with air conditioning, would recommend pool view to capture sun on balcony. Breakfast was very good with plenty to choose from, we had lunch on several days and it was excellent with freshly prepared food. Staff in every area were very friendly. Wifi available in rooms and public area at €1 per day. Safety deposit box in room for small charge. The hotel is located very close to beach about a 5 minute walk, we found the hotel's pool to be a very relaxing place to while away the hours. Hotel is a c.20/25 minute walk to walled Old Town where there are an abundance of good restaurants. Only minor complaint is that there is no fridge in bedroom. Taxi from airport cost €20 and takes c.20 minutes.
A quality three Star hotel with a gem of a restaurant. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the bedroom and en-suite bathroom were more than adequate and an excellent shower. The hotel is run very efficiently by three members of the same family, a brother and two sisters. The brother, Salvatore, runs the restaurant, and it is superb. The cuisine is mainly seafood and is to die for. The hotel has also beautifully manicured gardens and an excellent swimming pool.
this hotel is a very well run establishment, and attention to detail is second to none. It may not suit everyone as the rooms did not have fridges which was a little inconvenient. The pool area is lovely and very clean. The breakfast and lunches we had here were great! It's about a 20 min walk from the old town along the promenade .... the hotel is a 20 min walk to Maria pia beach which is nicer than the Lido beach.
we enjoyed our stay at La Playa.
we were half board and greatly appreciated the varied and excellent menu with very attentive staff. my wife is gluten free and nothing was too much trouble - very helpful.
grounds are relaxed and the garden pool and evening eating area a delight.
pros; friendly family run hotel with excellent food and helpful staff set in lovely grounds. bedrooms and en suite bathrooms were good with towels changed daily.
cons: our bedroom overlooked the rear street which at times was a bit noisy which we were ok with, and it was a 2km walk into the old town.the bus service was a bit eratic (go for the reliable ALFA bus rroute ather than the erratic AF busroute)
easy to get to and from airport using local ALFA bus route - no need for a taxi etc.
we would go again to alghero and visit this hotel.
Visited this hotel with my husband for a weeks stay , when we arrived our room was not available (some issue with the bathroom) so we were put up in an apt across the road which we didn't mind but there was no air con in the apt and it was a heat wave hitting the early 40's 😰. The bed was so uncomfortable that we decided that if our room wasn't ready we would look for alternative accommodation but luckily it was the next day . Breakfast is between 7:30-10 not a second later !! ,very basis breakfast eg fruit bread ham cheese and some scrambled egg if your able to eat it . Staff were very friendly and helpful but the cleaners were around cleaning rooms from 7:30 and made a lot of noise and didn't think of the sleeping guests (a few people I spoke too also complained about that ) finally the owners of the hotel are two elderly sisters and they could be a little bit more friendly to their guests . They charge €1 a day for wifi which I personally thought was a disgrace and also charged us on the day of our check out for it which was 8:15 am ....and drinks food and bottled water which they sell there is very expensive also and you can't pay as you go they will give you a bill at the end of your stay . Overall a nice clean hotel near to the beach but at least 20 minute walk to the harbour where the nice restaurant and nightlife is . A taxi cost €10 to the harbour from this hotel .
We have stayed in Hotel La Playa on two separate occasions. When we went back the second time (which was two years after our first visit), the staff in the hotel remembered us! It was this personal touch which really endeared Hotel La Playa to us.
When you arrive at reception you are greeted by two sisters who are extremely friendly and helpful. It's a family ran own hotel and all of the staff make you feel very welcome and comfortable.
The rooms are a good size, with comfortable pillows and bed. There's a balcony looking out onto the pool area where you can sit out and relax. The pool area is so well kept with lots of loungers and there is a restaurant there which serves lunch and dinner daily. There's also a bar so you can enjoy a drink by the pool! The gardens are beautiful with fabulous different colour flowers and it's so well kept.
The hotel is located about a one minute walk from the beautiful beach. It's about a 20-25 minute walk to the old town. The walk is along the sea front and beach so it's a really lovely walk.
I'd definitely recommend this hotel and will look to stay here when we return to Alghero once again!
lovely place with helpfull staff.
Nice grounds around the pool with plenty of room for all the guests as well as well-kept garden areas.
The hotel is perfectly situated, close the fabulous Maria Pia Beach and a 10 minute beachside walk to the impresive Old Town.
There are loads of resturants in the town but it was a delight to eat at La Playa with its good old fashioned service.
Pros
This hotel is in a good location, very close to beach and around a 30 minute walk into the centre. The pool is a good size. We ate lunch here as we were short of time and they do great pizzas!
Cons
Very small balcony,no table-just two plastic chairs. Small rooms. Strong drain smell in bathroom.
A general feeling of 'penny pinching'. You are charged for absolutely everything extra that you may need during your stay. There are numerous signs stating that if any damage occurs to property (thankfully this didn't apply to us), you will be charged,e.g. damage to room towels. This does create a child like feeling of treading on eggshells and worrying that if a mistake is made, there will be consequences! You are also charged to hire beach towels at 5 euros per person, per week if you need to. These are just towels that other people have left behind,do they really need to be charged; can these not (at the very least) just be rented?
When we asked to use the Internet, we were given a wifi code for one week (no cost was discussed-just billed to our room, per person), this code then ran out after 6 days. We were then charged again for a one day code to use.
We also asked for a key for the safe, again this was billed to our room with no discussion.
You are also given a miniature bottle of shower gel at the beginning of your stay; however, this wasn't replaced once during our stay.
For our anniversary, we asked if we could borrow two glasses for a drink in our room and a plate for some food that we had bought. We were told 'no'. This deterred us from buying any further food/drink from the hotel as we simply didn't want to give any further custom to them. Customer service just wasn't apparent. There was always a feeling of 'we'll get as much out of you as we can'. I understand a hotel is a business but the things that keep people
returning to such places, are the feeling of being a valued customer and quite frankly, just the feeling of being welcomed. Both these things were significantly lacking.
These are all small incidences but the costs and feeling of unwelcomeness do significantly add up. Sardinia is beautiful and most people are so friendly and welcoming. This hotel, however, made us feel more like a pay cheque than a guest.
My husband and I have just returned from a week's stay at this lovely, family run hotel and we intend to return next year - so that in itself speaks volumes about Hotel La Playa. Our room was spacious, air-conditioned with a comfortable armchair, large bed, nice ensuite, balcony with two chairs over-looking the pool and ample room to unpack things. The pool was just heavenly with many sunbeds placed around it and enough space to find shade if required. The garden is tended with great, loving care and is simply beautiful - an oasis - with palms, vines and flowers. Breakfast is served in a bright room with many tables and there is a huge choice - all self-serve. There is as much as you could want to eat and drink - from cereals and croissants to fresh fruit, eggs, sausages, cold meats, cheese, gateaux - you name it - it's there. Evening meals are, if required, selected and booked from a wide choice at breakfast time. These are fantastic value, delicious and served (as is breakfast) by the nicest, most helpful and charming staff in the restaurant area beside the pool. The sea bass is wonderful - but so was everything else we tried. If you don't manage to tear yourself away from the pool by lunchtime - and if you have room after breakfast - you can indulge in pizza by the pool too. We hired a car for the week but it's really not necessary. The beach is within just a few minutes walk and the old town and port are just a stroll away beside the sea. I really can't speak highly enough of this place and its staff.
It is a pleasant experience to stay a week in this hotel at few steps from the beach. Everything you need in a holiday is inside or around the hotel pool, garden, restaurants, supermarket, beach, see, wonderful view of Alghera. The owners will offer you the reception or the inside restaurant service, affectionate, professional making a home atmosphere. Even old, the hotel is maintained is a good condition, very clean and all functionalities. A lovely place is the garden and the pool. For those who enjoy a good meal do not expect too much from the breakfast but instead try a lunch meal, especially a grilled fish. And finally the same recommendation I received from other clients, choose the third floor with pool view.
