Great location. Amazing views at the front. Lots of character.
Friendly accomodating staff. Very clean and comfortable.
Great breakfast!! Easy to walk round Dartmouth and the parking on the street was easy in January. Might not be so in summer.
Just had a midweek two night stay at the Royal Castle hotel. Excellent as always and we have been coming back for many years. The room was well appointed, bed very comfortable and view from the room superb. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choices. Eat in the bar at night and the food was lovely. Great atmosphere and efficient and friendly service. The hotel is closing for refurbishment but will definitely be back in the future to see the changes.
2 night winter break at the royal castle using st Austell breweries discount offer. Fantastic value. Dartmouth is the most perfect place, always something going on and the hotel has prime position. Very comfortable characterful room, loved the quirkiness of the hotel building and views are amazing. Great breakfast and good food in the hotel bar. Marked as a 4 as some renovation and updating to the room wouldn’t go amiss but a 5 for the excellent staff.
Lovely quirky old hotel, great staff, clean and well equipped/presented room - only negative was generator/pump starting up about 07:00 each morning.
We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Royal Castle. It's a really cosy, friendly place with such a lot of history and interesting architectural features. The food and service were very good, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We understand that the hotel will be closed shortly for an extensive re-fit, and hope that the character of the hotel is not lost in the process. We would love to come back.
What can I say, The Royal Castle is right on the harbour the foods great we had a fantastic breakfast very dog friendly which was great for us, But most of all the staff ALL the staff were amazing I really do mean amazing it's not a 5 Star hotel but the staff make it a lot more than 5 stars I can honestly say the staff are Golden, Thank you for making our short stay one of the best.
We had a night at the Royal Castle Hotel at the end of December - one double and two single rooms. The double room was at the top of the building with fabulous views over the town quay and river, very comfortable bed and great little sitting area. The bathroom is a little old, but perfectly adequate (once we worked out how to turn the shower versus bath on!) Our adult children said their single rooms were great too. Lovely welcoming reception team, warm cosy bar and hearty breakfasts on Sunday morning, although a little busy as a lot of guests turned up at that 9.30am 'prime time'. The staff were good and apologised for the wait which wasn't an issue, but would have been helpful to have the fruit juices and water topped up. It's a great old building with lots of history in a prime location, reasonably priced so would definitely recommend.
We stayed 3 nights at the Royal Castle and had a wonderful time from the moment we arrived. All the staff are so very friendly and welcoming and in particular Lina on reception who made our visit even more special and her husband who kindly moved all our bags to the top floor whilst we had a drink; which was a lovely surprise.
We enjoyed dinner on New Year’s Eve and it was perfect especially with two dogs in tow!
We loved the charm and quirkiness of the hotel and we can’t wait to visit again and stay once the refurbishment is complete.
Thanks to everyone we met; it was like home from home.
We had a fantastic stay here. Our room was clean, with coffee making facilities, a jacuzzi bath and overlooked the harbour. The hotel is very quirky and eclectic which we loved. The staircase is amazing I kept expecting it to move as in Harry Potter..The bar area is welcoming and friendly but does get busy. We ate on 2 nights and found the food to be delicious and good portion sizes..the breakfast was lovely too a good selection of cereals , pastries and fruit etc. You cook your own toast which can cause a queue if busy and we did have to find someone to top up the milk and bread on one morning.
Car parking is at the front of the hotel but does have time limits for free parking and does get busy, there is a bigger car park nearby.
We loved our stay here and will definitely return.
Just returned following a three night stay at the Royal Castle , in part an opportunity to celebrate the new year in Devon.
It was a return visit for us, though our last stay was nearly 14 years ago !!!
In truth little has changed. The hotel is somewhat 'quirky' with creaking floorboards and a very eclectic collection of art and artefacts all of which adds to the charm of the place.
Location is perfect overlooking the River Dart with the town centre behind the hotel. There are two separate bars on the ground floor both popular with guests at the hotel and locals. The restaurant for breakfast and evening meals is on the first floor, though snacks and meals can be ordered in the bar.
The choice at breakfast is excellent and there is a decent evening menu too.
Our room, was very big with a super king size bed and a large bathroom with bath and shower and nice toiletries.
Best of all are the staff who were without exception friendly and welcoming.
I would recommend to anyone wanting a stay in an unpretentious hotel in the centre of Dartmouth
We are regular visitors to lovely Dartmouth so have stayed in many hotels and guest houses. The Royal Castle is right in the middle of town and our room (2) had a lovely view over the harbour and river.
Areas for improvement- staff at breakfast were perfectly friendly but it was very informal with a sense of limited training in customer service - ‘what’s your room number’ is how we were greeted. My wife’s cooked breakfast arrived with no toast leaving us to work out that you had to toast your own bread at the buffet. The water pressure in our room was really poor. It took ages to fill the jacuzzi bath and the shower was very weak. We brought our own ear plugs so slept very well. Without these you can very clearly hear all noises from the next door room and outside.
Positive side - clean, comfortable and spacious room with very comfortable bed. Good breakfast. Overall we would stay again - with a few ‘tweaks’ this hotel could be excellent.
I recently stayed at the Royal Castle Hotel and had a wonderful experience, thanks to the exceptional service. Lina at reception was warm and efficient, ensuring a smooth check-in and making me feel instantly at ease.
Harry at the bar also made a lasting impression with his friendly and attentive service. He created a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, making the bar a great place to unwind after a busy day.
The hotel itself is full of character, with a lovely blend of historic charm and modern comforts. I also have to mention the food—it was absolutely delicious. Every meal I had was well-prepared and full of flavor, making dining at the hotel a highlight of my stay. I’ll definitely be back!
Loved my room which had a view over the harbour and the River Dart. My room was quirky and old but clean and comfortable with the usual mod cons, and with a bonus - a double size jacuzzi bath!
The only drawback is there is no lift but this a very old building, so carrying luggage was a little difficult. Also the hotel is very popular so a little noisy but not unduly disturbing and somewhat adds to the atmosphere!
The food was very, good, I had an evening meal and breakfast.
The staff were all friendly and helpful.
Car parking available in the street outside the hotel and out of season not a problem.
Location was great which was in the town centre overlooking the harbour and River Dart.
Can’t wait to come back!
Fantastic place ! We have stayed several times this year and each time it doesn't disappoint The location is perfect The team on duty were friendly helpful and visible but not in your face The Breakfast is sooo Good and plenty of choice the evening meal we had was excellent value We will be back soon !
Charming old hotel in centre of Dartmouth
Lovely old place with original features.
Good food and staff, good location
We recently had a group booking at the Royal Castle Hotel while attending a service in Dartmouth. The hotel is lovely, offering stunning views over the water. It’s immaculately clean, with a nice bar and very helpful staff who made our stay enjoyable. The atmosphere is welcoming, and we felt well taken care of throughout our visit. Highly recommended!,
This was a great Central place to stay the staff were all lovely and
the food was great
Excellent location, good food and very friendly staff. We were in a room called the 'Look Out', great views of the inner harbour and over the river.
We were lucky enough to pick a weekend when the Christmas lights were switched on. Highly recommended.
An historic hotel in the centre of Dartmouth. We had a dog friendly room on the 3rd floor with fabulous views over the boat float and river Dart. A large room with a king size bed, table and chairs over looking the river. Plenty of storage for clothes. A bed, bowls and treats for our doggy. The only negative was the stairs. I knew there was no lift but I still sound the stairs very tiring.
We had a tasty cooked breakfast in the restaurant. Very friendly and helpful staff.
