All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent (dinner and breakfast). The hotel has character - it's a lovely old building in the centre of the town, so brilliantly placed. Good on site car parking. The room, though technically a single, was a good size, the bed was probably a double size anyway, and everything was clean. One particular but small thing - there was a decaf tea bag in the room tea and coffee pack, which I thought was very thoughtful.
The only thing was the unreliable WiFi - I resorted to hotspotting off my phone. I get that this is difficult in a large old building, but it's a bit of a pity as I was working on my laptop in my room. When it did work, eg in the public areas of the hotel, it was perfectly fine. This is the only reason I've given this an 8, otherwise it would be an easy 9 or 10 out of 10.
Traditional style and good quality catering.
It’s a little tired in places and the bath needed a good clean particularly around the area your head encounters the scum rim!
Very comfortable stay with tasty food and helpful staff
Location, staff n breakfast
No air con. Cleanliness of room.
We always stay at the Bedford Hotel when visiting family in the area so good location. The staff are all very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The bedroom was very clean and comfortable. A wide variety of food is available and in our opinion always cooked to perfection. The whole hotel is good value for money and the cleanliness excellent.
Close to everything, clean and well kept, full of history.
A lot of noise from room next-door and above,
Food was excellent.
Smallest shower I've ever seen. Overpriced.
Visited with elderly mother who is coeliac at 2.30pm, when we were told meals were no longer served. Ordered 2 x savoury teas - scones with cheese, marmite butter & relish, 1 of which was required to be gluten-free, which was possible as gf scones available, explained that marmite butter was not gf, possibly relish also may not be gf(barley vinegar). Waited 20 mins, order brought to table by a middle-aged waitress. Mother tried to slice scone, fell apart with solid middle. We showed the waitress who agreed it was not acceptable & took it away. Waited for my mother’s order, brought by a tall young male, now with 2 small scones. My mum sliced into the scones, which were exactly like the previous large scone - crumbling, powdery & solid in the centre - this can happen when over heated in microwave, we know. Now my mum had her order, I cut into my savoury scone, which wasn’t properly cooked in the middle - uncooked dough. My mum’s plate was missing any butter, The 2 slices of cheese on each serving was the thinnest they could be, with my mum’s with the outer rind of the end of the cheese, which meant it couldn’t be eaten. Politely complained to the young man, who very brusquely removed the order & we asked him, politely, that we have the cost returned. He gestured to the bar, left, without any apology & without any grace at all. My mum went to the bar where she was given a refund with no apology.
Service around us we observed was chaotic. People were asking about orders being waited for, tables were uncleared, earlier for some time there was only 1 person manning the bar, so people were waiting for some time to be served.
Gf scones are easy to make. Anyone with a genuine dietary requirement shouldn’t need to eat crap. Chefs, try your food before serving it. If making gf food is beyond you, buy decent ones in - M&S are ok, or I’ll happily give you a simple fool-proof recipe! Train your staff not to slam down orders and if grace doesn’t come naturally to them, teach them that when things go wrong, how to make them right. Waiting staff aren’t responsible for what comes from the kitchen, but as someone who’s worked in catering & hospitality, much can be forgiven when staff are apologetic & gracious.
Price point - £9 for a ‘savoury tea’ - a scone, 2 wafer-thin slices of cheese, a weird slice of gelatinous ‘marmite butter’ & spoonful of pickle is value? If it’s that price, make it good.
I was considering a 2-night stay later in the year with family. A friend was considering the hotel as a wedding venue next spring. A simple order so badly executed doesn’t bode well!
Tolle Lage, charmant eingerichtet
Good location and ambient furnishings
Creaky flooring in the room and having to pay for parking
The garden , quality vibe , the staff, books etc
Having to carry drinks down to the garden
Lots of space to sit - inside and outside.
Good breakfast.
Good location.
Water in the room was tap water in a jug - it should have been bottled mineral water.
There were two fans in the room but they were noisy and not very powerful - invest in quieter, more effective fans.
A fridge should be in all rooms.
The outside temperature was the high 20s/low 30s - very hot!
Having to move room as the toilet was broken and the second room had a wasp problem.
Some of the rooms need an update as windows were painted over so would not open. Bath rooms and shower very small.
Cooked breakfast was poor value unless you had full English breakfast.
Room was ridiculously hot. We had to change room. Ineffective fan
Had not been informed that there was a charge for parking until checked out.
Would say that the customer service is always mixed. But I have found that I tend to get a very grumpy/blunt attitude from some of the male staff and find it unwelcoming. It’s a shame as they have the best beer gardens in Tavistock.
Staff were friendly, room was great ,bed really comfortable
Would definitely stay again
Central Location, awesome building.
All good.
