Wonderful location on the medieval walls with great views of the harbour, yachts and boating activities. Easy access to the Sea Organ, old town and major sights.
Our room was spacious, well designed and very comfortable. The bathroom was well designed and appointed, and the bed enabled a great sleep.
Breakfast was a highlight with a wide range of cooked options together with an attractive buffet.
The restaurant is highly recommended with a very good array of food options and superior wine list.
I would definitely stay here again, and would dine at the restaurant as well in a hearbeat.
We had a decent sized room with a reasonable bathroom. Enough lights in the room. The location is pretty good, on the “tourist” side of the harbor. So far, so good.
The desk is too small, and one-third is filled with coffee equipment and a telephone. There is only one available plug at the desk and no USB ports. Luckily, I travel with a triple-tap and an advanced plug so that I can connect at least five devices with one plug. Overall, the desk/electrical setup is inadequate. There is one plug at each bedside, and that does help some. So does the excellent Internet service.
One and only one luggage rack in the room, but a bench at the base of the bed works for that purpose too.
Two types of bedside light on each side, but one of the four lights did not work.
The hotel has only one elevator so it can be slow to get up or down.
Breakfast was just okay.
Staff is friendly and helpful.
Would we stay here again? Maybe but we were not impressed with Zadar so the likelihood of our returning is small.
We just finished a lovely stay at the Hotel Bastion. The hotel is situated in a great location right on the edge of the old town close to restaurants, historical sites and the river which had the most wonderful sunsets.
The staff was very accommodating, especially the team at breakfast in the morning.
The only items that kept me from giving a 5 star review was the noise and the air conditioning. When we travel we like our room to be on the cool side. The air conditioning was turned off for the winter, not a problem since the windows opened. This became a problem in the middle of the night when the night club let out, followed by the birds waking up and then the ships in the harbor sounding their horns. Had to sleep with the windows closed after that.
This is probably more of an us problem but still frustrating.
Beautiful hotel in an excellent location within the old town of Zadar. Close to restaurants and the bay. The hotel staff was very nice and helpful and the included breakfast was delicious. Definitely recommend!
Near the end of 3 weeks in Croatia. So happy to have the comfort and service of an American quality high end hotel after several apartments in historic cities “posing” as hotels. Hotels.com complicates the issue by not easily distinguishing between the two. Great staff. Great location. Great harbor view. Great cocktail bar. Great breakfast included. Easy parking. Will recommend this hotel to all our friends traveling in this area.
Lovely stay and wonderful staff
The decor is very basic , the service mediocre.
Very good location.
Had a beautiful view from the window but there is a club playing loud music just in front until very late hours. The staff thought that there was nothing to do, so if you sleep light be aware and no chance of leaving the window open.
Far from being a luxurious hotel but the price paid was suitable for one
We loved this elegant boutique hotel. Location is great and we had an amazing dinner at their restaurant
Loved the staff at this Hotel. It has a great location for walking around. We had an early checkout so they made us a box breakfasts to go.
I cannot say enough good about the staff, the front desk, the bar, the restaurant. Everyone is so helpful and friendly and there to make your stay wonderful. Great night's sleep. The room and the location cannot be beat. This is the place you need to stay.
Beautiful and unique boutique hotel.
Awesome
Hotel Bastion was definitely a mixed bag. The hotel itself is beautiful and conveniently located just inside the city walls and near the harbor. The rooms were clean and the staff was polite. Marina, one of the people who staff the front desk, was incredible. We wanted to book a private boat tour, and she was able to do that for us the night before. She also helped us locate several services in town that we needed.
The lowlights were breakfast (at one point, there were no plates at the buffet, no and glasses, and they had run out of fruit and certain breads. The orange juice, apple juice and coffee varied from poor to undrinkable in the case of the coffee (contained grounds, was lukewarm, etc.). Orders from the kitchen took 40 minutes or more. The dining room was full of people at a buffet who could not eat because the food and the dishes were scarce. This happened on both mornings we were there.
Finally, we asked for late check-out in order to do laundry, and they flatly said no. We had to go out and do our own laundry and check out at 11:00, despite the guest book in the room saying they offered laundry service and checkout was at 12:00. We also were running late because of the breakfast issues, and ultimately left breakfast without getting our hot food orders.
Again, the rooms and location (and Marina!) were excellent. Otherwise, they were seemingly understaffed and/or unwilling/unable to help with some essential services.
Gorgeous amenities, close to everything, I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
I strongly recommend this Hotel for many reasons : excellent location , very good food and amazing and real professional team ! Specially Mr Damir the duty manager who was incredibly nice and attentive ! Will come back an other time for sure !
The place is beautiful and the staff at the hotel and the on-site restaurant are wonderful
Good location for exploring the old town. We booked a Suite (excellent but expensive), dinner was extremely expensive so only ate there once. Good service ( including parking our car!) . Excellent breakfast with individual cooked dish of choice offered.
Disappointing stay – sleepless night and dismissive staff
Booked Hotel Heritage Bastion expecting a peaceful boutique experience. Sadly, my sea-view room faced an open-air nightclub that blasted music until 1:30am. This was never mentioned in the listing or at check-in.
At 11pm—when I was already in bed—reception casually offered to move me. Not helpful when you’ve already unpacked. The next morning, the manager was dismissive and said I should’ve "known" the hotel faces the club. No apology, no accountability.
Breakfast was poor, and the staff attitude was indifferent. The hotel presents itself as premium, but nothing about the experience felt that way.
I raised this with Expedia, but the hotel refused to take any responsibility. They claimed they can’t control another business—yet it’s an open-air club directly across the road, and every room on that side is affected.
If you want a restful stay in Zadar, look elsewhere. Loud music, poor management, and a lack of guest care make this hotel one to avoid.
Avoid if you want sleep – nightclub noise and poor attitude
I rarely write negative reviews, but this stay was such a letdown. Booked Hotel Heritage Bastion for a relaxing heritage experience in Zadar. Instead, my sea-view room faced an open-air nightclub with music blaring until 1:30am—something not mentioned online or at check-in.
At 11pm, reception finally offered a different room—after I’d unpacked and settled in. The next morning, the manager was shockingly dismissive and told me I should’ve "expected" the noise because of the room’s direction. No apology, no accountability.
Breakfast was basic, service indifferent, and the hotel fell short of its boutique promise.
I raised this with Expedia, but the hotel denied any responsibility. They claimed the music was from a separate business—but it’s an open-air club directly across the street, and all the sea-facing rooms are affected. It’s impossible to sleep through, and guests are not warned.
I’m a frequent traveller and Gold Expedia member, and this was by far my most frustrating stay. If you value peace, choose somewhere else. There are better hotels in Zadar that won’t leave you exhausted and let down.
The Bastion Hotel is in the old city of Zadar, near its Western end, (and therefore near to the Forum, the Sea Organ, Greeting to the Sun, etc), It’s a relatively small hotel, because no big ones have been permitted in the old city, but it has a spa (not used by us), a very good restaurant with views over the water, and a bar which also serves coffee. Perhaps because of the restaurant, the breakfast was of a particularly high standard, with a wider than usual set of freshly cooked options which clearly were fresh and beautifully presented.
Our room was a very good size, with adequate storage and in very good condition. The bathroom had a toilet, sink, walk-in shower and a lot of storage space and was in really excellent condition; it looked as though it might have been recently refurbished.
The staff were very helpful, professional and knowledgeable. Our interactions with them gave us the feel of a 5* hotel rather than a 4* one which technically we believe this is. Thoroughly recommended.
