You get what you pay for
Pros:

Stayed here New Years Day `for something to do`... The hotel looks nice on arrival with pleasant staff but is very corporate and the rooms could do with a bit of a revamp as a few things are just tatty. Room was small, even after an upgrade, and cold. Bed was comfy enough and a decent shower. Breakfast was OK too... This is a very cheap hotel which includes breakfast so for the price is ideal for one night... Would stay again if I needed a hotel in Jesmond.

Find somewhere else
Pros:

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. We booked three rooms for six days over the Christmas time, therefore have spent a considerable amount of money. The rooms are very tired looking but vary in size. My double room was tiny, the other two were reasonable. If you book a twin room you are told on the day of arrival that you are booked into an adjacent (old hotel The Carlton) but the carpark is behind the cairn. Sinks are cracked, lamps are brown, towel rails don't work. The final straw was asking the receptionist if our sheet could be changed as we had spilt something on it, we took of the sheet and went out for the day to see relatives to find the sheet put on the chair for us to make our own bed. We will never stay again, or recommend others to do so.

Overnight stay
Pros:

Stayed overnight was enough, the room was freezing. There was a small heater but did not make much of a difference. The hotel has got worse since last time we stayed. Breakfast not great, also I have not seen a chef cooking in his coat with his hood up before in the kitchen. It’s a shame as in a good location.

Disgusting
Pros:

Disgustingingly filthy. Mould on the windows. Bathroom so dirty I couldn’t bring myself to use it. Booked a double room for two adults which had a 3/4 bed and was tiny and looked nothing like advertised. Stay anywhere but here

Excellent hotel stayed for 6 months
Pros:

I stayed at this hotel for 6 months while working here on business Monday to Friday .
I found the hotel to be clean and I stayed in various hotel rooms .
Bed conforable
Shower and bathroom clean
Warm rooms
The bar staff are friendly -and good prices
They do have limit parking which can be a pain as you have to park in front or behind another car . But it’s ok .
The area is good plenty of food and bars around .
Would definitely go back if I’m up there again

disgusting avoud
Pros:

Horrible! booked a double room for two adults and was a 3/4 bed. Mouldy, filthy .... management not responding to email complaints. Save your money and book a hostel... as this hotel is the equivalent of a hostel!!!

Don’t bother…
Pros:

Extremely poor visit. This hotel feels incomplete. Staff are rude and refuse to help.

I booked 2 rooms for my family. The first room stunk of weed and the radiators did not work, leaving the room freezing.

The doors to the second room don’t lock and there is mould in lots of areas of the room.

Other guests are extremely loud with no response from staff.

Do not stay here. Don’t waste your time, brings down the Jesmond area.

Cairn Hotel /Carleton
Pros:

We had booked a standard room and we're put in the sister hotel ( formally the carlton ) across the road. We were given a room which when checked in We were told was on second floor. It was at the top of the hotel with no lift access.
The room was nice and big but it was extremely hot at night. When we arrived the hotel has no staff on duty.
The smell coming from the bathroom was horrendous. It only got worse the longer we were here ( we were booked in for 4 nights as it was my partners birthday ). They definitely need to get their drains/pipework checked. There is a fan provided but it was full of dust so didn't use it. We also had to wipe down the wardrobe as the shelves were extremely dusty. Top of the wardrobe is even dustier as we didn't touch it. Paint is peeling in bedroom and tiles in bathroom needed cleaning. Bath panel also needs painted/ rubbed down. We were unaffected by noise as we were at the back of hotel at the very top so no issues on theat front.
Hotel is joined onto SPY which do really nice food. The area is nice although definitely student orientated.
I won't be back to this hotel unfortunately as the smell was knocking me sick. No staff to complain to as hotel unmanned as you check in across road at the cairn. We check out tomorrow and seriously can't wait. Ps we have had a great time in Newcastle just the accommodation wasn't up to par.

Great location, very dirty
Pros:

We first stayed in this hotel 8 years ago and were blown away by the full experience so when we had the chance to come back to Newcastle it was a no brainer to stay here again.
I’m disappointed to say it did not live up to our expectations. Our room (206) still had the convenient features that had blown us away the last time but it felt shabby, dirty and it had not been well maintained.
There was blood on our bedsheets, there was a big damp stain on the ceiling above the bed, the bathroom was covered in mould and the bathroom fan did nothing to draw the moisture away. The toilet continually ran water unless the flusher was pressed again after flushing. The room was dirty with dusty floors and splashes of brown liquid up the peeling wall paper. The floor lamp looked like it would fall apart if we went near it and the volume knob for the music speaker was missing.
We approached the desk about the mouldy bathroom and bloody sheets and they advised us the hotel was full so they couldn’t switch our room but they said they’d get housekeeping to give the bathroom a good scrub in the morning and they changed our sheets straight away. Sadly our bathroom didn’t seem any cleaner after they had been in the next day.
I think the most disappointing thing is how perfect this hotel would be with a bit more attention to detail and maintenance. The location is great, the staff are all very friendly and the food in the restaurant was excellent.

First experience of staying in a hotel in Newcastle.
Pros:

It was a lovely hotel, with everything needed in the hotel. There was fresh towels on booking in, and tea/coffee in the room also. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who's wanting somewhere to stay that's near the city centre but also if you're looking for good value for money. I would say the only issue I had was the students as there are many coctail/restaurants on the main road which can cause a noise disturbance, but it usually calms down around 11pm/12am. Overall, I would stay here again without a shadow of a doubt.

Pros:

Shops opposite the road. Staff were very friendly. Other guests had a party in the room next to mine and it was impossible to sleep. No staff there at night so not possible to get help if things go wrong at night.

Always read the reviews
Pros:

Booked a room at the cairn and ended up in the Carlton , across the road, beside the bus stop, in what I can only describe as the attic with ambitions. The room was dark, small, and tired, with furniture sporting more stains and mysterious marks than an art student’s portfolio. On the plus side, the bed was clean and comfortable, and the bathroom was fine—so long as you didn’t inspect the floor too closely .

No lift, so we earned our breakfast calories climbing stairs before walking back to the other building to actually find breakfast. Thankfully, it was worth the trek: tasty food, friendly staff, and plenty of coffee to wash down the previous night’s adventure.

Now, about those paper-thin walls: I didn’t just stay at the Carlton—I enrolled in a crash course in AI in the business world and got front-row access to my neighbour’s life story. By 5am, I knew his kids’ names, his wife’s schedule in India, and even picked up a bit of Hindi. Consider it a cultural exchange program I didn’t sign up for. My polite “knock diplomacy” reminded him I was still alive next door.

All in all, I slept well, ate well, and left with unexpected knowledge. You can’t choose your neighbour—but you can bang on the wall.
Please note staff were great, helpful and friendly.

Pros:

After i had booked, i received a warning from the hotel about late night noise from the bar below. What i didn't expect though was other guests running around shouting much of the night. The annex i was staying was unstaffed. Not a hotel to stay in if you want to get any sleep.

Pros:

Nice stay for us but didn’t realize it’s right above a bunch of university bars! We laughed upon arrival the first night as there were probably 100 students drinking on the patio directly below the window. They close at around 11 and by 12 is perfectly quiet, so this wasn’t actually an issue for us, but if you’re travelling with children or sleep early, I’d maybe consider other lodging.

Grocery store right across street and cafes/restaurants very close was nice!

Great option for work stays or weekends away enjoying the city
Pros:

I’m currently staying here for a work trip (just one night) and so far, I honestly can’t fault it. I’m in the main building above the bar (room 207) and after reading a few reviews I was a little sceptical about potential noise. However, I haven’t heard a thing from neighbours or the bar – quite the opposite in fact. A cool feature in the room is a little switch that lets you play the chilled bar music through a Bose speaker if you want to, which is a nice touch.
Parking is at the rear and you do have to double park, but reception explained this clearly and even offered to call me if I blocked anyone in early. I made sure to park close in so I wouldn’t get that 7am call!
The hotel itself has real character. Yes, the corridors could do with a bit of a refresh, but my room was massive, spotless, and well-equipped – TV, fridge, free Wi-Fi, iron, ironing board, all clean and tidy. I travel a lot for work and usually end up in Premier Inns, which are fine but very basic and dull. This place feels completely different – vibrant and individual. The Mexican-themed restaurant/bar downstairs is great, and you’re within walking distance of plenty of other bars and restaurants too.
I can’t comment on breakfast yet, but I’m looking forward to trying it in the morning.
The best part? The price was nearly half what a Premier Inn wanted for the same night. Amazing value for money. I’ll definitely be back and hopefully can bag the same room again. Highly recommended if you’re after something with a bit more personality than the usual chains!
