The staff make this place and it could so easily be excellent instead it is good and comfortable.
Pros:

The hotel is a little run down and quirky but the facilities onsite are good especially the parking and staff are really friendly and make the stay. Breakfasts are great and dinners are hearty pub grub.

Cons:

Showers are all a bit old fashioned and quirky.

Won’t rush back to this one.

Bed was comfortable

Cons:

Very tired/dated bedrooms but you get what you pay for. Paid for inclusive breakfast. In absence of being told breakfast times on check-in, I referred to Green King website which says (and still says) The Bear serve breakfast until midday at the weekend. They don’t, they finish at 10am so we missed that. It seems actually you don’t always get what you pay for. Staff not interested in trying to resolve the issue on site. A bit disappointing.

Another excellent stay at this very dog friendly hotel!! Staff are so welcoming!!
Pros:

The room was spacious only downside it was up lots of stairs which made it a bit challenging with taking my dogs up and down them. Old building with small staircase BUT the staff are so dog friendly and the large car park make up for it.

Pros:

Convenient for the train station and visiting our friends who live close by.

Cons:

We had the noisiest bathroom ever due to the water pressure. We've stayed in the room next door to this many times and never had any problems. This was room 48.

Comfortable restful stay.
Pros:

Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of hot and cold. room was tired but it was an old building. Bed was very comfortable. Being in a pub that also did food was a bonus. Plenty of off street parking.

Cons:

nothing really. Great location for what we were doing that weekend with plenty of parking.

Nice cosy place on a budget.
Pros:

Nice old hotel in a great area for exploring the coast. Very comfortable bed and good light from large windows.

Cons:

The bathroom and some furnishings are a bit tired but it was a good price for 1 night.

Historic hotel in a good location in need of major refurbishment.
Pros:

The staff were helpful. The location was perfect.

Cons:

I stayed in Room 18 at the top of the hotel. Reached by a series of doors, narrow steps and connecting doors. Not a problem for me as I am reasonably fit and agile but would be a serious problem evacuating the building in an emergency esp in the dark.

The room itself had features that made moving around unsafe due to a low sloping ceiling especially over the tea area, TV and dressing table. I am average height and banged by head several times during my short stay.

The Bear is potentially a beautiful hotel but it is in desperate need of a multi-million pound refit which I recognise is difficult in these times of economic pressures on the battered hospitality sector. I also appreciate that such an investment would inevitably push up room rates.
