A excellent 4 night stay booked via secret escapes.
We stayed on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. Great quality and selection of foods on the menu.
All staff amazing however big shout out to Bella on check in for our free upgrade due to the building work ( we didn’t know this was being carried out when we booked) both Rob/ert in the restaurants and bar area as-well as Steph. The staff can’t do enough for you.
We were privileged to met the owner while chilling out in one of three open fire lounges a few days into our break Paul what a lovely guy.
We socialised with several couples whilst we stayed which was lovely to share a drink and conversations so openly and in such a comfy environment. Thank you Autumn the dog and owners Laura and Simon.
Loved the fact you could chill out in one of the lounges any time of day with there great selection of new books to borrow, board games or even the origami. We used the record player to play some old tunes too. Would love some newer tunes to the collection too.
Weather wasn’t great had a quick look at the front of the manor very impressive grounds and would be lovely on a nice day relaxing with a cocktail or two.
Room was a courtyard comfy with lounge no 23 was a lovely upgrade.
Loved seperate lounge area. Bathroom with double sinks, shower and bath.Main room consisted of dressing table, settee fridge, radio, tv,coffee machine, homemade biscuits daily and the superking bed and bedding just Zzzzzzzzz.
Downsides/ in the middle of nowhere however we liked the remoteness
No chest of drawers for undies socks , folded clothes.
Hooks in bathroom for robes would be an advantage.
Amazing stay.
Hyll is an incredibly special place. We spent just one night there & were blown away. The setting is simply perfect-overlooking the green countryside and the perfect garden for a sunset.
Everything in the hotel is geared at you enjoying the most relaxing time possible from the moment you walk in. The smells, the lighting, the music. The hotel has three lounges with roaring fires in winter, light reading or puzzles to do. There’s an LP room to play vinyls and increase your relaxation.
The bedroom encapsulates tranquility with the comfiest of huge beds, beautiful views and a stunning stand-alone, Victorian style bathtub. Even the kettle is a slow-pour kettle for a relaxing brew. Perfection.
Dinner was a delight with exceptional service. Starter and main in the beautiful ambient restaurant and dessert in the lounge by the fire.
Close to beautiful villages like Chipping Campden if you wish to venture out - although that’s unlikely.
Serenity!
Truly fabulous stay at The Hyll, Charingworth. Everything was first class.
Serene atmosphere - relaxing.
Room was superb! lovely comfortable mattress and pillows, beautiful, crisp, immaculate bed linen. Bathroom was stylish - shower was amazing.
Food at dinner and breakfast was 5 star - crockery/cutlery, food quality, temperature of food, presentation, service - all excellent.
THANK YOU.
Jeanneatte & Martin
We loved our one night stay at Hyll. A short pre-Christmas get away and it could not have been better. Lovely room that was small but very well designed. We had the dog with us and she was made very welcome. We had supper and the food was fantastic, inventive and delicious. Breakfast equally good. Would come back, but will go for a larger room.
When we recently heard Charingworth Manor had changed hands we excitedly booked for dinner with friends. The old hotel is unrecognisable! Hyll’s interior design is fabulous. Big squidgy sofa with a roaring fire for drinks then ultra modern, beautiful restaurant and bar for dinner. The staff were very friendly, not quite 5 star but their friendly demeanour made up for it.
The glasses, cutlery and crockery were also really good quality; I think a wine glass can make or break the wine.
Cocktails and mocktails were very good as was the wine we chose. The food was ‘OK’, but I was expecting more based on the prices and decor. Scallops were over cooked and over salted. Poussin was cooked nicely, but bashed potatoes were dry and powdery without much taste. Husband’s steak was very small for £38 and not cooked to perfection. Chocolate torte was the star of the meal.
The restaurant was very quiet for this time of year with only a handful of tables occupied. We guessed this was maybe because the marketing wasn’t in full swing yet? There was talk of a soirée to introduce local people which we thought would be a great idea.
There were a few other things that could have helped our experience: more obvious signage for the main entrance, dinner menus offered in the lounge whilst having drinks (we had to ask for them and then only provided with two between four), a separate wine list with introduction to the cellar and descriptions of wines (the wine is expensive but the list is buried in the bar menu with no descriptions).
Overall, we really enjoyed the Hyll experience and wish them every success. Hopefully the hotel and restaurant will be a great addition to the local community.
I absolutely loved my stay at Hyll, so much so that it will now become a Christmas tradition. The atmosphere in the hotel was amazing and was created by the staff with how accommodating they are. To be honest it was the staff that made the whole stay even better than it was already and a special mention the the girls on reception Lara, Sacha and Djoney who were extremely friendly and polite, but the main aspect that stuck with me was how helpful they were. Also the ladies in the restaurant Jenny and Zoe were very nice.
Hyll also captured the Christmas spirit perfectly with the decor of the hotel and they really put a lot of effort into it which made the stay feel even more relaxing. It takes a lot for me to get in the Christmas spirit, but I definitely felt it here.
The interior of the hotel and rooms has that Scandi vibe which I loved and I booked the Courtyard Cozy Room with lounge which was a large suite. The rooms are amazing and very relaxing and they have captured that feel brilliantly.
Overall the hotel is aesthetically pleasing in an amazing with the setting, with a long drive leading up to the hotel. I live close by so I’ll definitely be there more often whether it’s just ti dine out or stay again.
So pleased I found this place. It’s amazing
My boyfriend and I had the most wonderful stay here last weekend. It's one of those places, that, from the minute you pull up, you relax! Really gorgeous surroundings, with a warm and cosy feel in the main house and rooms. The room felt super luxurious for such an affordable cost and the service throughout our stay was top level. Special shout out to Jenny - you were amazing and I would come back just to chat to you! We also had such a delicious meal on the evening in the restaurant - and almost had the place to ourselves. It was just so calming. Could not recommend this idyllic hotel more if you want a very relaxing Cotswolds retreat. We will be back!
We booked Hyll for a one night stay in November, it is a really lovely place. The room was across the court yard and although it was lovely there were just a couple of small issues we found. The room is very dimly lit with no big light available. The coffee & tea making facilities are really lovely but I had to use my mobile torch to make the coffee as the corner was extremely dark & I couldn't see what I was doing.
The bathroom was nice but didn't have a mirror which i found odd and there were no drawers of any kind in the room.
We ate in the restaurant on the evening and the food did not disappoint, it was really fantastic! If we lived locally I would definitely eat there often.
Breakfast again was great, with really good choices, for me as a vegetarian there was lots of choices of hot breakfasts & I would say it was one of the best breakfasts we have eaten in all the times we have been away!
We would definitely return to stay here again.
We had an enjoyable stay at this newly refurbished hotel.
Good: tasty dinner - highly recommend the delicious poussin, very good quality breakfast - highly recommend the excellent porridge with brown sugar and cream. Location is pretty with nice views and not far from Chipping Camden and Broadway.
Work in progress: there needs to be a bit more to do for example a walk on the grounds, spa treatments. The lounges were lovely but very smoky and sometimes busy. Our room was a bit noisy above the restaurant but this was handled well by staff which we appreciated. The shower was good but very small and leaked onto the floor. Our living room area had low ceilings and was too dark to read in. Nice Dyson hairdryer but no socket near a mirror and no make up mirror. No doubt over time these factors will be improved as it expands and it will become a lovely place to stay if the quality of the food remains as we experienced it.
I spent the most delightful day and night at Hyll and was blown away by the whole experience which has been thought through down to the most meticulous details.
The renovation and all construction work has been carried out to the highest standard, combining the best in local materials and craftsmanship with state of the art contemporary design.
It clever respects and celebrates the historic building as a foundation for a cutting edge rebirth. I can't wait to see the new function/marraige hall brought to life as it will surely make this venue unbeatable
As a creative I particularly liked the art and books avialable to enjoy, right down to a record player in the library and supply of vinyl to help guests curate a soundtrack to which they could peruse the books and magazines that had been laid out..
The team of staff, from the local community, were delightful - passionate, helpful and, importantly, human - this is no corprate hospitality machine but a business that knows its brand will never be better than the people delivering it.
The bedroom, as one might expect, was appointed to the highest standard with the finest bed linen and bathroom products. I didn't want to leave it.
My favourite and most inspiring detail of my stay had been left on the bed side table - two tiny books that had been designed, written and illustrated in house simply entitled - Do Nothing and Do Something.
Which said it all. I can think of nowher ebetter to go to Do whatever I want.
I booked my friend and I in for a full afternoon tea to celebrate her 'big' birthday. We knew the venue previously as the Charringworth Manor Hotel and remembered the fabulous views, so were a little disappointed it was a misty, damp day. However, on arrival the cosy and welcoming atmosphere put aside any disappointment. The renovations were sympathetic to the character of the building, but made it feel really fresh whilst being super cosy. The lady who welcomed us and took our coats could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The gentleman serving us in the restaurant was so polite but warm, putting us immediately at ease. Nothing was too much trouble. The tea itself was one of the best I have had in a long time (and I have had quite a few!!). The savoury selection in particular was unusual, freshly hand made and delicious. The scones were perfect and sweet/cake selection just right. Everything was fresh. The ambience was really relaxing, with just enough attention from the staff (including several free tea top ups) to make sure we were happy, but without being obtrusive. The new owner even came over and had a chat. When the tea 'beat us' we were offered a box to take away the excess. We were also encouraged to have a look around at the 3 lounges that had been refurbished - oh wow!!! There were roaring log fires in all 3 lounges, one for 'reading', one for 'chatting' and one with an old fashioned record deck and vinyl records. I could so have just curled up on a sofa in any of the options. I would 100% recommend this hotel for an afternoon tea, and would so love to experience an evening dining experience there (or, even better, a stay!!).
Just been to the hotel on business for 3 days and wow how all the staff are like family and so professional in each of there jobs i do not want to name people for the fear of missing someone out. from the kitchen to bar housekeeping and maintenance and finally check in nothing was ever a problem for them to sort and each and every member plays a crucial role and makes you feel so special and i hope the owners appreciate this as without these special people you do not have a hotel.
Extra bonus at xmas for you all i hope
Will be back again soon as the beds and food are to die for WELL DONE TO ALL INVOLVED
MANY THANKS AGAIN
MOLLY
We stayed for 1 night on a Saturday for a birthday suprise. We booked a Manor House room which is the highest category room available at HYLL. On arriving we were checked in promptly and shown to our room but strangely we were led through the restaurant, down a steep set of steps (with no hand rail) and into the courtyard to the rear of the Manor House. To our surprise we had been allocated a very small dark room which was of the lowest category available at the hotel (Cozy Courtyard).
The main word I will use to describe the room is DARK! It was so dark inside that we found it to be disorientating. It felt like being inside a dark cave. The walls, furniture and bed were all a dark brown and the lighting was so dim and inadequate that we could not see around room properly.
The room had a small window looking out to a road. A very tiny TV was affixed the wall which was impossible to watch from the bed and could not be adjusted. The bathroom was very small with no windows or ventilation and the smallest wash basin I have ever seen in a hotel, this was the type of sink you would see in a cloakroom.
There were no drawers or furniture to allow us store our belongings and the bedside tables where made from two large pieces of black wood.
I went to reception to tell them there had been a mistake with the room as we had paid for a Deluxe Manor House room. After checking I was told Agoda had made an error and because the hotel was full for the night this was the only room available to us. I asked for the supervisor who apologised and agreed to refund the difference between the rate we had paid and the cost of the category of room we had been given.
On getting back to room we noticed it was very cold, the radiator was cold to touch and we could find no thermostat or instructions for the heating. I again returned to reception to let them know. Richard on reception was very apologetic ge followed me back to the room checked the radiator and explained the only option was to provide us with a portable electric radiator for the night, this was essential as it was forecast to be -1 °c overnight. I explained that we were unhappy due to already having a mixup with the room. Richard apologised and offered us a free meal in the restaurant as a gesture of goodwill.
The building itself is a 17th-century manor house and the exterior is stunning. The location is on top of a hill with amazing views. Unfortunately the recent renovation has focused too much on looking trendy for Instagram rather than functionality of the rooms and the guest experience.
My main issue with the room we stayed in was it was so dark it was impossible to see anything, I had to use the light on my mobile phone to make a coffee to prevent scolding myself. We so noticed the room was dusty with many smudges and marks on the walls. This is probably because the cleaners are unable to see the dust or marks with such low light. The bathroom is not fit for purpose, there is nowhere to store anything and the mirror steams up after one use meaning it can't be used, it takes over an hour to clear due to there being no windows or ventilation. For a woman doing makeup or hair it is completely impossible to get ready.
Breakfast the following morning was not great, very disorganised with a limited choice of cold items. The bread ran out and was not replinished, we had no cups on our table and had to ask for cereal bowls also the loose leaf tea was awful and very weak.
It's such shame as this is beautiful manor house that has the potential to be something very special but unfortunately all the focus has been put into creating trendy interior design which looks good on Instagram but no thought has been given to functionality of the rooms or the comfort of guests. At this price range its completely unacceptable and we would not return. If I was to compare HYLL with other hotels of this grade in the area such as Dormy House near Broadway there really is no comparison.
Beautiful hotel. Bedroom had everything we needed with a stunning view overlooking the Cotswold hills. Dinner was amazing and breakfast was fresh and delicious. Staff were very welcoming, helpful and attentive. This is THE place to relax in style. We will definitely return as well as recommend to family, friends and colleagues. Thank you!
Lovely hotel, beautiful building. We had a warm welcome from Bella who showed us to our very comfortable warm and very clean room. Modern decor with darkish paint on all walls and ceiling which made the room feel a little dark Gorgeous bed with top class linen. The room was so cosy and very quiet. A sumptuous big deep bath tub with lovely hot water and good toiletries. Good hospitality tray with well stocked mini bar. We did not dine at the hotel as we were meeting friends. However when we returned in the evening we relaxed in one of the absolutely fabulous lounges with a log fire and lovely sofas. We were looked after by lovely Jen who served us our drinking chocolate by the fire, wonderful. A really quiet nights sleep We then woke to a fabulous breakfast in the gorgeous dining room, again served by Jen and the great waiting staff. The food was superb. We loved our night here and would strongly recommend to fellow travellers G and C Thomas
What a fantastic hotel , so peaceful, room was excellent, with great facilities.
The restaurant was well laid out with plenty of room and the food was incredible.
We sat outside with coffee one morning and the view is stunning .
Absolutely amazing 3-night stay at Hyll near Chipping Campden. Incredibly designed and thought out interior, set on a beautiful estate, with a mission and ethos based on 'doing nothing'. Clearly lots of attention on the little details, from the amenities in the room to the books and layout of the 3 lounges you can relax in.
The staff were amazing; attentive and going above and beyond to make your stay feel special. Although the staff were always around, they blended in with the hotel, making the experience feel like you had a whole manor house to yourself whilst also being looked after.
Half the rooms are in the manor house itself, and the other half are in 'cottages' attached to the manor. I don't think it matters which you stay in. We were in the cottages and loved our room.
The hotel is newly renovated and a couple of the areas are still being finished. This was being completed very discreetly and was no bother at all.
A perfect experience, excited to see how this place evolves and visit again soon.
I chose Hyll for a night away to celebrate my husbands birthday. We received a warm welcome coming in from a cold & wet day. Our room was delightfully warm & cosy - we loved our bed & bedding so much we ordered a set of sheets & pillowcases when we got home ! The walk from the main part of the hotel to our room was slightly let down by walking through a few corridors of unrenovated spaces, but we know the hotel is new so we understood. We spent the first part of the evening in one of the sitting rooms. The sitting rooms are all lovely and refined, but they are all small as in it feels like someone’s actual living room in size and not hotel sized. We struggled to see if the hotel was full where everyone would fit ? I think there is 27 rooms and there are 6 sofas and some armchairs scattered around - doesn’t seem enough ? But maybe there are more public spaces planned. We chose cocktails and settled in for a chat. Durning that time an elderly couple came in and sat in chairs reading books as I said the rooms are home sized living rooms so it was like sharing the space very intimately with strangers reading and we felt a bit uncomfortable… so we departed to another sitting room and would have enjoyed putting on some records on the turntable but it didn’t work.
After freshening up we headed to the restaurant. I did ask to change tables as there are spotlights directly above you and it was absolutely blinding. I just couldn’t have sat there at all - total ambience killer, so moved to a darker spot. Dinner was fantastic we really enjoyed the food. Amazing nights sleep and great breakfast. So a couple of issues but nothing too deterring ! It wouldn’t stop us from staying again or recommending it to friends.
Have been coming here for a few years and loved it but this was the first time since the rebranding and refurbishment and I fear it is now trying to be too cool for its own good and failing on some of the basics of good hospitality.
Check-in was rather odd - my partner had to give his name, address, car reg, bank card number, card expiry date and security code out loud to the young woman on reception before she would show us to the room, despite the fact that the reservation had been made a number of weeks previously.
We had a garden room. It was clear that the decoration of the room was incomplete - the french windows to the garden were covered in splatters of dried plaster and the wooden frames obviously had not been decorated for some time. The terrace outside was cordoned off with parking cones and tape because there were workmen still laying turf in the garden. There was a cupboard with a rail and coathangers but there was nowhere else to store clothing - the room badly needs a chest of drawers. As a result we lived out of two suitcases for 4 nights because there was absolutely nowhere to put items such as underwear, socks, t-shirts, jumpers etc.
The washbasin in the bathroom was tiny - it's the sort of size you'd have in your downstairs loo for handwashing but it is far too small for a bathroom. As a result you could not wash your face/shave without splashing all over the floor. We were continually having to mop up with the bathmat, which became sodden. It is perfectly possible to have something which ticks both the aesthetic and practicality boxes but the washbasin was attractive to look at but wholly unfit for purpose. There was nowhere to hang anything in the bathroom. There was a small heated towel rail which wasn't big enough to accommodate two damp bath towels and so one towel had to be draped over the radiator in the bedroom. I am afraid you do not pay the best part of £400 per night and expect to put up with that sort of thing. The hotel has been redesigned and refurbished and these are the sort of basic things which should have been considered. I suspect too much attention has been given to being cool and stylish and practicalities have been ignored. On the second day we had to go to reception to ask for more loo roll because it had not been replenished.
Other reviews have commented adversely about the earth-toned decor throughout - I actually quite liked it, it is quite soothing up to a point, but I think it could be relieved by splashes of colour here and there to mitigate the paper bag effect.
The staff are generally good - friendly and helpful without being intrusive (apart from the receptionist) - and it was nice to see some staff members who have been there since we first started staying. It seemed, however, that they were very much under the cosh and somewhat stressed and trying to do their best under pressure. One member of the team did say that they were short-staffed. We enjoyed the food, especially the breakfasts.
Building work is still going on - they are building an "events barn" accommodating up to 150 people. I would not want to stay if there was an "event" happening and I would hope that the diary is organised so that "events" do not coincide with the bookings of guests seeking a tranquil stay.
The hotel is in a beautiful building in a beautiful location and we really wanted to like it in its fresh incarnation, but I am afraid it is currently falling short on the fundamentals of a comfortable stay and on that basis I do not think it offers fair value for the prices charged. It may be cool to have a record player and vinyl in the lounge area but it is not cool to have to deal with soggy towels and nowhere to put your stuff.
Aesthetically beautiful with great attention to detail where the decor is concerned. The dim lighting is moody and flattering. Beds are extremely comfortable and touches like the goodies drawer, Dyson hairdryer and clothes steamer are noticed. That being said, this hotel still has some work to do....
The staff are delightful and polite but almost so discreet that you wonder where they are at times. It feels understaffed which has repercussions on the service levels. During the evening meal it felt like there was a shortage in the kitchen which had knock on effects for the waiting staff and during breakfast, the poor team were running around like headless chickens continually apologising for the wait. Great team...just hire more of them to create the well oiled machine which is needed to make this place work.
The food was average. There was a limited but adequate menu which made me think the dishes would be superb but in reality that was not the case. The scallops were okay, lacking in any real flavour but the lamb dish was pleasant. Fine to do a limited menu but then every dish MUST be excellent!
All that being said, the hotel weirdly feels like it is trying too hard almost. To be cool, hip, super relaxing, different but still not either quite knowing how to achieve this or still not there quite yet. I could not decide which.
It's got legs definitely, but is still wobbling in flats at the moment....it needs to find its heels and walk tall and confident. Good luck to them, really wish the team the best.
