We spent two nights at Sextantio Albergo Diffuso in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, and the experience inside the hotel itself was truly exceptional. This is preservation hospitality at its finest — thoughtful, poetic, and deeply romantic.
The room was absolutely stunning. Beautifully restored with original stone, wood, and natural materials, it felt timeless and intimate. The atmosphere was incredibly calm and romantic, with soft lighting and a sense of being gently disconnected from the modern world, without sacrificing comfort. Sleeping there felt like inhabiting history in the most elegant way.
The cantina was outstanding. The food was delicious, high-quality, and deeply rooted in local tradition. Every meal felt authentic, refined, and comforting at the same time. The ambiance was warm and atmospheric, making dining there a highlight of our stay.
That said, the village itself was a bit disappointing for us. While undeniably beautiful and historic, there are currently many visible renovation and restoration works taking place, which create a strong contrast with the ancient, picturesque character of the town. We were aware of this in advance, but did not expect the renovation elements to be quite so present.
We were also a little disappointed to discover that the hotel’s main restaurant — which we had very much looked forward to — was closed due to the off-season.
Despite these points, Sextantio remains a very special place. The quality of the restoration, the romance of the rooms, and the exceptional cantina make it a unique and memorable stay, especially for those seeking atmosphere, history, and a refined sense of place.
Rispetto struttura originale
Posizione TOP! Concetto di albergo diffuso incredibile. Stanze concettualmente meravigliose.
We stayed at the Sextantio hotel in Matera and loved it so much that we basically re-engineered our entire winter itinerary just to spend three days at their sibling property, Diffuso Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Zero regrets — except maybe that we didn’t move in permanently.
The attention and care that’s gone into revitalizing this hilltop town is unreal. It’s like someone lovingly dusted off history, patched up the stone walls, and said, “Okay, everyone back to being charming again.” The locals are so kind that we briefly wondered if we’d wandered onto the set of an Italian hospitality commercial.
And since it’s inside Gran Sasso National Park, you also get jaw-dropping natural beauty included free of charge. Views so gorgeous they should come with a warning label.
Highly recommend the cheese-making course with Serena. She doesn’t just teach you about cheese — she basically escorts you on a time-traveling adventure. 10/10 would stir curds again!
Included is a charcuterie board and glass of wine. Great value for the experience!
Esperienza autentica e unica .
Camino in camera molto apprezzato
