We booked 3 rooms for 2 nights in Jinjiang Inn Hainan Haikou Dongfengqiao at April 2016. 2 toilets of 3 rooms are found dirty and cannot flash properly. Receptionist was not in good manner when we approach him to ask for taxi information.
As warned by other reviews the staff did not speak English but they were patient and I managed to check in without many problems despite my complete lack of Chinese. Room was very clean with facilities for making tea although no bottled water was provided. There is a small supermarket right next to the hotel which sold water, food, snacks, toiletries (and usefully umbrellas). There is nothing touristy in the neighbourhood but the location is very central and I used taxis to get to my conference and historical sights with ease. The free razor blades the hotel provided were unbelievably painful to use but I bought some from the shop next door. The hotel provides buffet style breakfast and evening meals which were really good! One last thought, the hotel is not a place for a lie in, I slept to 10 one morning and missed the chance to have my room being cleaned!
Not only is Haikou an excellent jumping-off place for other places in Hainan, it's an treat in and of itself, and the hotel is located close enough to shopping, tourist spots and Haikou proper. The room is spacious and clean and EXTREMELY affordable, while the staff tries to accommodate as much as it can, even if the guest only speaks English
Bank of China is where you change foreign currency. Doesn't matter if you turn left or right at front of hotel, if you cross the road and keep walking you will find a BOC. Hotel staff very accommodating and speak little to moderate English. Need to speak slow. Breakfast tasty and affordable. Be adventurous. You may find a favourite food. I had friends to take me on the bus and taxi etc. but I'm sure that staff would give you the info if needed. It is helpful to print out any hotel name and address to get directions or give directions to taxi's etc. There are searches you can do on the internet to get these. Buses cost 1RMB for short distance and 2 RMB for longer trips within Haikou. It also costs 6.5RMB for the fast train to/from Haikou train station at the ferry terminal where you arrive if you travel by train from the mainland. Sometimes you need to wait 1 hour for the train. Fast trains run to schedule as far as I know but I have found long distance trains to be late in my 2 experiences.
With a daily rate of about RMB160 the hotel gave me a reasonable clean room & comfortable beds, free internet access. I also paid RMB 18 for breakfast buffet (congee, Chinese buns, fruits, etc.). Opposite to the hotel there is a supermarket. Next to the hotel there is a small road-side night market for food. So, it could be a bit noisy at late evening. There is bus stop near by. I did not find it too difficult to get taxi. In general I feel the operation is under staff and the hotel reception is small. I saw the hotel also served tour group. It could be very busy sometimes & you need to wait patiently. Majority the guests are Chinese. It could be difficult if you speak only other languages. Of course, I would not compare it with popular branded hotels, like Sheraton, Shangri La, etc. That is why I only rate it as 3 (2.5 if there is such choice) because that was what I paid for. Jinjiang hotel chain is reputable in China with many years of experience in the hotel industry. I still recalled my first patronage at its then 5-star hotel in Shanghai in the 1980s. In short the hotel is basic, simple & economical.
