I had booked seven Junior suites at The Ashoka Tree Hotel in Bali for my clients, expecting a smooth and pleasant stay. Unfortunately, the experience turned out to be a major letdown on multiple fronts.
Every room had issues —in spite of it been marketed as a four-star property; from basic maintenance problems to missing amenities — and what was most disappointing was the staff’s complete lack of interest in resolving them. There was no sense of hospitality or accountability. When we asked for basic necessities like hand towels, a hairdryer, or an iron, the response was either a curt “we don’t provide that” or vague excuses. For instance, when we requested an iron, we were told someone else had taken it and it might be available the next day. The next day, there was no follow-up, and frankly, the attitude discouraged us from asking again.
Even during dinner, the service was indifferent. We had to repeatedly ask for plates and glasses — something that should be offered proactively when guests are ordering multiple dishes to share. The hesitation and lack of warmth from the staff made the entire experience feel unwelcoming.
As a travel consultant, I felt terrible that my guests had to go through this. I had chosen this property with the hope of offering them a comfortable and enjoyable stay, but instead, it became a source of stress and embarrassment. The overall vibe of the hotel was far from what one expects in a hospitality setting, especially in a destination like Bali known for its warmth and service.
I sincerely hope the management takes this feedback seriously and makes significant improvements — both in terms of facilities and staff training — so that future guests don’t have to face the same disappointment. Overall it doesnt even qualify to be a two star category hotel from the experience of our guests.
Arrived at Ashoka after a long trip from the UK for our honeymoon having been advised to stay here from a travel agent who recently visited. First impressions of the hotel was nice beautiful pools and great location for people who want to be close to ubud but not in the centre of the busy town centre. However, this turned into s nightmare very quickly. The hotel room
We were allocated was dirty. I am never one to complain but the walls even had dirt on them. The shower room was stinking and smelt. We complained to reception and was told no rooms were available. We decided to get our things and book another hotel, after staff found out this information suddenly they suggested an “upgrade” to another room even after we were told no rooms were available. This room was slightly different still cleaning is not Ashokas strong points. With this in mind another trip to reception was made, they did a deep clean twice before we was happy to stay in the hotel at all.
After being somewhat satisfied we were happy to remain for the few nights due to staffs efforts to make sure we had a clean room.
The pool and breakfast/lunch facilities were kept very clean and I highly recommend ordering a pizza from the bar!
Security staff were outstanding! Gusti and another gent on the entrance made the whole experience at this hotel worth while! If you need to rent a bike or get directions/ recommendations Gusti and his team were always on hand to help no matter the time of day.
All in all the staff, pool and restaurant made this experience incredible but the room was such a let down.
Very nice property, great breakfast
no recommendation. We were given a completely different room than the one we had booked. We said so right away and they spent 2 hours preparing the new one. Both the new room and the one we were given in the first place were full of mold. both on the ceilings, the walls and on the blinds next to the bathtub. The bathtub was filthy dirty and the whole bathroom smelled. The whole shower cabin was completely limescaled and dirty. The toilet was filthy dirty and the bathroom floor was greasy. The bed creaked so you couldn't sleep well and woke each other up every time you moved. There were stains on all the furniture, bedding, towels, etc. The location was super bad. very far from any town. We walked 2 km before there was a really good restaurant we dared to eat at, without getting Bali belly. We had booked 3 nights, but we chose the same evening we arrived to book a new place starting the next day, as we simply couldn't stand being there, due to the smell, lack of cleaning, location, etc.
We booked through Expedia and chose the reserve now and pay at checkin option.
Once they said the room was ready and that all they needed was the payment, I went ahead and gave them my credit card.
Upon arrival to our room, and laying out our luggage I started noticing that room was clean. Like the bathroom curtain. It wasn’t a big deal and I was like okay whatever just the curtain. Then I noticed the hot water wasn’t working. And the room light flickering.
Furthermore, when I got to the bed there was literally stains on the pillow and mattress! 🤮There were stains on the sofa as well and ants on the coffee table that was the final straw for me. I told my wife let’s go get a refund I do not trust this place anymore.
But wait there’s more!
When trying to leave the hotel room I wanted to lock the door because our luggage is still inside, and guess what……. The door wouldn’t lock!
Anyone with this type of an experience at any hotel wouldn’t trust it and would go to a different hotel. I went back to the front desk and told them everything that was wrong with the room and the lady offered another room which I politely refused because the trust isn’t there. I told them I’d like a refund and the lady said you have to cancel 2 weeks prior to reserve a refund. Which doesn’t make sense because I literally paid 1 hour ago. And I reserved it under the option of “Reserve now and pay at check in”
I politely told her that she can either refund me here or I’ll just call my bank and tell them to dispute this transaction. She told me to go ahead and call my bank. Upset and infuriated I went back to the room to gather my luggage and find a new hotel. After 40mins we found a new hotel and went downstairs to leave the hotel. The lady then said that she spoke with her manager and that she can issue a refund after one week since I used an international credit card. My check in was July 16th 2025 and I am writing this review July 21st 2025.
I still have not received a refund from the hotel and they are currently asking for my bank details which does not make sense. I paid by credit card and they should refund my credit card.

Although our stay was very short, we requested for dinner in place of breakfast as we were to checkout at 3 am. We were assured good packed breakfast at 3 am. The packets were given but not as promised and listed at the Reception. The breakfast was incomplete
The hotel atmosphere is comfortable, the rooms are spacious and clean, the staff welcomed us in a friendly manner, when we wanted to change towels the hotel staff followed up quickly. The location of the hotel is quite hidden but that will not stop us from coming back.
It was all a disaster from day one. Someone somewhere had lost our booking so we ended up in what was described by a manager as the lowest value room despite also saying it was what we had booked, the 'superior garden room with views of the pool and garden'. In reality it had a view of an alley and a few plants. Whilst the original problem (not having a room) was being sorted, we were told to go for a drink at the restaurant. All we wanted was a coke and beer, simple right. Not so simple when the place doesn't have an alcohol license. Supposedly it was being renewed. The room smelled musty and of drains and wasn't cleaned unless you asked. That said it was cleaned very poorly and little effort put in. As said in other reviews the sink and bath were badly stained and looked dirty. The shower screen likewise. They were definitely in need of replacement. The shuttle which was advertised, ran once a day took you into Ubud but didn't do a pick up. The evening meal we had was not great and we didn't eat there again although the resort next door did a smashing meal and has an alcohol license. We didn't find the staff as unhelpful as other reviews have said and they did fix the aircon (leaking) as quickly as they could. Overall I cannot recommend this resort to anyone despite its lovely setting.
Absolute disaster this soo called resort is super old and is in dier need for renovation. Firstly the two girls at reception need to learn the meaning of hospitality, anything and everything you ask them the ans is NO!!!!! They need to learn how to behave with the customer and not to talk in Balinese and ridicule them. The location is the worst no street light it gets super deserted by 7:30 pm. There is no gym. No services. Nothing don't know how they call themself a resort! Snakes, lizards,ants you name it they had it. Old stained wc n bath tub they dnt even make an attempt to clean it simply say it's old and will look like this only even if we cleaned it.. dnt waste your money staying here. Management plz teach some basic ethics and manners to your reception staff. Oh yes they claim they have a shuttle service three times a day also a lie. You have to place your break fast order by 11 pm for the next day coz even when they are at full capacity it is not an buffet breakfast. Worst experience in ubud
We did not get the rooms we paid for. The hotel was dirty. Far from everything. Limited food options.
Staff were very polite and friendly but I would not recommend staying there.
The hotel does not look like the photos they advertise. They do not offer housekeeping unless you call them directly and ask for something to be cleaned. The room we stayed in was very moldy and a lot of stains on the bedding. (They also warn you of additional fees for any stains or damages) We arrived after the check in time and they did not have pillowcases (6:30pm). We found more blood stains on the duvet and requested for it all to be changed. Thankfully they did it without a hassle. Although they changed it, the new ones had stains still. Red stains. The washroom curtains and window curtains were all stained with black mold. There was a smell in the room all day which I bet is from all of the mold.
I would not recommend this place.
Poor hygiene, poor aircon condition, aircon not cooling, aircon no maintenance, water leaking and remote not working, bath room not clean, room is dusty, regret to visit this hotel, bath tub no clean, won’t visit again, hotel need to refurbish again
Resort Ambience was amazing, Loved the vibe of the villa it was very peaceful and also staff was very helpful and very attentive to resolve all the queries.
Also Indian food is available nearby the hotel.
Loved the morning breakfast as well.
I stayed at Ashoka Tree Resort, Ubud from May 21st to May 22nd, 2024, and my experience was extremely disappointing. The staff was very rude and unhelpful. They assigned me a room on the second floor, but the key they provided did not work. Despite informing them multiple times, I had to make 3-4 trips between the second floor and the ground floor before they finally gave me a working card after I raised my voice. The staff's lack of assistance and courtesy was unacceptable. I would never recommend this resort to anyone.
The experience at Ashoka Tree Resort is a pleasant place, complete facilities and friendly service from the staff, a place that is highly recommended for families, couples and individuals who want to experience the atmosphere of Ubud, Bali
Internet connectivity problems kept occuring , I could not make some important transactions because of this. The hotel management should take ownership for this and not pass the accountability to the service provider. May be a backup should be arranged.
I had an amazing stay at this villa! The rooms were fantastic, spacious, and well maintained. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, making me feel right at home. My family and I were delighted with our stay and highly recommend this villa to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with top-notch service

Pools are not clean.
Daily housekeeping does not clean bathtub.
You ask for anything and they start crying. Creamer took 3 calls.
There are better hotel in this price range.
Stayed for 2 nights with my family in a two room villa with a private pool. Rooms are nicely decorated with big rooms and toilets and a common dining space along with a seating area with TV and a terrace. If any one desires they can cook also. Only the pool depth is 150 cm which is high for the kids they were not able to enjoy in the private pool. But in the common pool they enjoyed. The ambience is nice. But there was no Buffet breakfast. Options are limited for breakfast and quantity is less. So apart from breakfast and pool issue all is good.
