1 Star — Extremely Disappointing Stay at Hyatt House Virginia Beach Oceanfront
I rarely leave 1-star reviews, but my four-night stay at Hyatt House Virginia Beach / Oceanfront was extremely disappointing. The number of issues we experienced, combined with the lack of effort from the hotel staff to resolve them, made this one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had.
1. Broken shower with no clear resolution
The shower in our room was not working properly. When I contacted the front desk, they could not even provide an estimated time for when maintenance would come to fix it. For a beachfront hotel, having a functioning shower should be a basic expectation.
2. No hair dryer in the room
There was no hair dryer provided in the room. Another basic amenity that should have been available without having to request it.
3. $30 per night for parking — on top of everything else
Parking was not included with the suite, and I was charged an additional $30 per night for four nights — $120 total. Given the overall quality of service during our stay, this additional charge was particularly frustrating.
4. Room key repeatedly failed — extremely inconvenient and frustrating
The room key is required for almost everything: accessing the elevator, entering the hotel from the beach, accessing the parking area, and opening the room door. Unfortunately, our key repeatedly failed.
On one occasion, I reached my room on the 4th floor, only to discover that the key would not open the door. I called the front desk from my mobile phone and was told to come back down to the front desk to get a new key rather than having someone come up to the 4th floor to assist me. I had to take the stairs all the way back down to the front desk to get another key.
On another occasion, after going to the beach, our key would not work to enter the hotel from the beach entrance. I had to walk all the way around the building to use the main entrance. After complaining to the front desk, they simply recharged the key and sent us on our way.
For a hotel where the key is essential for so many aspects of access, having it repeatedly fail is unacceptable.
5. No housekeeping for all four nights — despite repeated requests
This was probably the most disappointing part of the stay.
Our room was not serviced at all during our four-night stay, even though we specifically requested housekeeping on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th days.
When I raised the issue, the response was essentially just “Sorry.” There was no meaningful attempt to resolve the problem or provide an explanation.
A four-night stay without housekeeping despite repeatedly requesting it is simply unacceptable for a hotel at this price point.
Overall: ⭐ 1/5
Broken shower.
No hair dryer.
$120 in parking charges.
Repeatedly malfunctioning room keys.
No housekeeping for four nights despite multiple requests.
And, most importantly, very little effort from the staff to actually resolve these problems.
Things can go wrong at any hotel. What matters is how the hotel responds when something goes wrong. Unfortunately, in our case, the response was mostly “Sorry” rather than actually fixing the problems.
I expected significantly better service and hospitality from Hyatt House for a $650 per night suite room. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this hotel and would not stay here again.
Very clean
Carpet in room could’ve been shampooed
Beautiful location and views, room was perfectly updated with a cold blowing air conditioner. The balcony and view of thr ocean was unobstructed and just perfect.
Location and pet friendly
Breakfast, no outdoor pool
I loved the hotel and the area
The pullout sofa was disgusting and awful. I didnt like the shower. The shower curtain should have been longer with that type of step in shower so the water wouldn't go all over the flooe.
Air conditioning went out 3 nights, hallways were 85 degrees all 7 days, massive floods from burst pipe in lounge, rooms, pool filter was off 1 day causing the pool to be filthy with Grey water for 3 days, toilet paper holder was off the wall, black mold in the shower, severely under staffed, food took an unbelievably long time (40 mins for eggs) when 3 little children are waiting, I would NEVER go back there again!!
Very clean, friendly staff in the breakfast area, good breakfast, very relaxing, pet-friendly.
I stayed from July 28 to 31, and I found the stay expensive, especially having to pay $30 a day for parking.
Love the location and oceanfront balcony. The breakfast and breakfast staff were wonderful. There was a good selection of items that rotated. The staff assisting with breakfast were outstanding. So friendly and helpful. They made our mornings wonderful (especially Kellie and Denise g). Also bartender Larry and Brittany in the restaurant are were excellent.
Feel like the cost was high for the area and size of rooms. Would like the restaurant to be open earlier for lunchtime and would be nice to have coffee / tea available through the day / evening like other resorts in the area. Housekeeping was limited, would have liked a few more hooks in bathroom to hang towels since not replaced daily. Extra parking cost per day was an annoying added expense.
Was not happy about not receiving turndown service the next day. Wasn’t offered any extra/clean towels and sheets the 2nd day of staying. You have to be staying at least 4 days before they even offer to do turndown service. As expensive as the rooms were they didn’t include parking (paid $30 a night), in which parking garage was across the street. Upon arrival the room and bathroom were clean and the overall conditions were good.
I like that the room was spacious for my family. The hotel is close to everything.
I did not like that there were flies on the raisins for the oatmeal. Flies flying around while eating breakfast.
Staff were great , facility clean, breakfast awesome... pet friendly great
Roll out bed was awful, balcony door hard to open, cracks in ceiling
Junior Suite made it possible to be together with family and watch movies in the evening.
If rooms had been together as we had hoped.
It was a good experience to stay. The staffs were very helpful and accommodating. They fell you welcome to stat in the hotel.
The view from the balcony was amazing
Wi-Fi access for computer.
I was very happy with the property as I stayed there previously five or six years ago and I will be staying again when I visit Virginia Beach
I can’t think of anything that I was not happy with or did not like.
