Friars Carse Country House Hotel

I need of some updating eg carpets upstairs.

The male server was exceptionally rude, which really tarnished my entire experience and I'm so upset because I'd been looking forward to this stay for weeks.

The kitchen could use a deep clean, and some new cooking dishes

Pressure of shower was low, sink was running slow. Not many socket.

Food was a little expensive for the vegetarian food.

Very relaxing and staff were excellent, friendly, and efficient.

Half the building has scaffolding up and theres construction barriers around the car park.
The whole building is run down and clearly not been touched in many years.
The rooms are the most basic, the bed base was two single faux leather bed pushed together which was falling apart. The mattress was slanted to a degree where we would be sleeping upside down and it was so uncomfortable.
There were parts of the room which was dirty! There were dust, cobwebs on walls and furniture. The TV remote looked like it has never been wiped. Mould and grime in the bathroom around taps and shower. Carpet was stained. The room door was blackened around the lock from hand grease and was sticky.
When I booked it states breakfast included however this was not the case. They told us that the 'continental'breakfast is included but the cooked breakfast is an extra £10pp. The 'continental' breakfast was toast, one plate of croissants, selection of cereal and one bowl of whole fruit which had seen better days. From looking at people's cooked breakfasts it definitely would not have been worth £10!

I think management has changed in the last year, so things were slightly different from a previous stay.
As many people have said, paying for breakfast only entitles you to a continental breakfast, whereas last year it was a cooked breakfast. Also, the pastries and cereals do not have covers over them, so there were flies landing on the food.

The hotel is a little shabby. It’s definitely cosy, but could be cleaner. For example, I put the fan on in the room, and a cloud of dust was released.

The staff were not as attentive this visit either. One thing to note is that when I mentioned I was hoping to visit Midhope Castle (Lallybroch to some), the staff were quite derisive. One member was particularly negative, which I feel is unnecessary.
They could have said “just be aware of these things before you go” rather than “you might be lucky to get there”.
I’m stubborn enough not to be put off by opinions, but some might change their plans based on what turned out to be inaccurate comments.

We’ve noticed that some décor needs updating but this is always an ongoing problem with older buildings. We live in an old house too.

A little tired, although lovely Eriod Bulding.
Lacking in Drinks ,such as Cocktails or the expertise to make something.

The fact that self catering is classed as being a non resident and breakfast was charged at 14.50 unlike hotel room guests who paid 9.50 . We were only there 1 night so had not taken breakfast things. Evening menu is ok of you like wagyu beef but otherwise it eas limiting. Would also suggest the grass be cut near the cottages, not a complaint though and we would go again, but better prepared for our stay. Staff were superb.
