Pros:

Caceres is a charming town, although much of it right now is closed or scaffolded. The impression of the hotel is undoubtedly enhanced by Caceres, itself. The building has character, the outside tables are a great place to unwind in the evening. The service is great—all the people who worked there were very helpful, genuinely friendly, a credit to whoever hired them. Breakfast was good, had excellent variety; although others seemed not to be, I availed myself of the made-to-order eggs. The bed was comfortable; there was a variety of pillows.

Cons:

My room was a cave; it basically faced a wall, an enlarged airshaft and didn’t get much natural light. The ac/heat vents spewed directly onto the bed (which often (for me) results in getting congested). It was quiet, and that had something to do with being at the end of a hall, but my impression is that the doors were not well soundproofed. Despite my neighbors’ consideration, I could hear their conversations and the closing of the door was unavoidably loud. You can’t always count on others being considerate. I was disappointed that the fitness room was closed; this should have been advertised; it was a factor in my choosing to stay there. None of the promotional websites for Caceres or the hotel inform you that you will not be able to access the most important landmarks now. Key towers are closed. The scenery is impaired for multiple reasons. It was misleading and disappointing. I felt as if I wasted my time and money going now. It’s a schlepp to get there by public transportation. That said, there are some festivals in town (Womad, which set up tents and band shells in front of iconic buildings). But the town’s charm still manages to shine through—though undoubtedly not as much as it would have if everything was open and accessible. The hotel cannot really be faulted for that, but it can be for the closure of the fitness room.
